Troy Smith signs with...

  • Terry_Tate
I can't remember how long ago this was, before the football season definitely, but someone on Bill Simmons' podcast talked about Troy Smith and said that a GM told him Troy is tough to have as a backup because he gets a lot of support and respect from his teammates, so it's tough to have him if the starting QB isn't locked into that spot. Take it for what it's worth, but thought it was interesting.

Now I don't think Troy Smith would ever light the NFL on fire, but I do think he could be a servicable QB. I mean, he can't be any worse than John Beck, Charlie Whitehurst, Curtis Painter, or Colt McCoy IMO.

prepare to be flamed. that tends to happen on here when you don't agree with the masses. They will also probably make it out like you said he is pro-bowl caliber. ;)

This thread makes me laugh. Apparently pick6 is a glutton for punishment.

I'm fairly certain you didn't just say he belonged in the NFL, you were saying he should be starting over Alex Smith. Oh well.

Let's see if he is still on their roster come week 1 next season.

Terry Tate is a reasonable/rational poster and he didn't go overboard while talking about Smith there so I don't see him getting flamed at any point.

I don't know man. Terry Tate probably didn't take "accounting classes at Ohio State." Taking said classes makes you "business-minded" per pick6

man..learn to read..Im tired of people putting words in my mouth.. Also just goes to show that Crouch starting over Smith was just to sell seats, like I said. Because if Crouch was really better than TS, wouldnt he be in the NFL?

also keep the thread on topic. This has nothing to do with the 49ers.

Where the hell did that come from? I graduated from Ohio State majoring in Accounting. That's weird. :)

Haha. He was telling us in the original thread that his opinion was better because he was business minded from his time taking business and accounting classes at Ohio State. It's just a running gag now

Ah, alright. I just saw that and was a little freaked out since that was my exact major and school, haha.

ahh okay, well I was wrong about what school you went to, but I did quote you correctly. Guess I just assumed you went to Ohio State because you were a fan. My bad.

Sure, some people may believe that he's an "NFL caliber QB" but you seem to think he's the next Kurt Warner. "Just give em a chance and he'll be a Hall of Famer." That's how it comes across.
Pick6;1060595 wrote:What? How? LOL. By saying he should start for one of the worst franchises in the NFL over a bust?!?
and how am I making this off topic? You started the thread off topic by smoking me and a few others out. What did you expect to happen?

Wish Dennis Dixon would get all second team reps and play.
  • BearBoy69
IMO Dixon might be a decent starter for another team. Not a stud. Around average, so it makes sense for him to leave for the likes of Jacksonville, Miami, etc. Smith is a valuable No. two QB for Pittsburgh due to the injury problems of Ben

Yeah I like Dixon. Showed potential when he has had a couple starts IMO. This signing helps Pitt because both Batch and Dixon are set to be FAs I believe.

That probably is something that should be determined before any "all you people who didn't think he can play in the NFL should shut up" comments are made. At least in theory, as it's too late for that now, going off the first post in the thread.

Back-up quarterback is a position of concern for the Steelers. Batch is old. Leftwich is made of porcelain. Dixon really hasn't shown the ability (in little playing time, to be fair) to be more than a game-managing stopgap. As a fan of the team, it seems obvious that Smith is going to get a shot to be Ben's back-up, but I don't know that him being on the roster at the end of preseason is a set-in-stone reality.

In the NFL world of salary caps, I doubt they'd keep a guy with NFL experience who has started in the past around as a third-string QB when that spot can be filled by someone making league minimum (or if you put money into that position, if Batch stays around, I'd rather have the guy with multiple years in the organization performing as, essentially, an extra coach on the sideline as opposed to a first-year Steeler), so I'd guess he's in a "#2 QB or bust" situation where he either outshines the current back-ups or he's looking for another job again.

So he signed, what exactly does that mean? Steelers give him $10m and have his rights until they decide on him?

I am somewhere in the middle on Smith. I think he's tough to have as a backup, because he thinks he should be a starter. But when I watch McCoy for a year, I have to think Smith is of his equal.

So, when you said you stopped watching Browns games, was that a lie for dramatic effect or what?

I always thought Troy Smith was decent, capable of being a solid No. 2 and spot starter.
