2012 Australian Open

Laley23Got underway last night, Donald Young, the young American advanced in 5 after winning the first 2. He has a "decent" draw. Should win the next match, but then faces Nadal in the 3rd. Nadal is banged up though, so who knows.
Ryan Harrison, another young American (19) got a terrible draw. Facing Andy Murray in the first round but is up a break at 4-2 in the first set on ESPN2 right now.
What are everyones thoughts and predictions this year? -
Laley23Also, if all goes to plan, Rodick will take on the Joker in the 4th round (Djokavic is through rd 1, Rodick hasnt yet played).
Im hoping for those 3 Americans to advance to the 2nd week in a few majors and win a lot on hard court this year so they can have a solid draw in Flushing this fall. Tough draws to start for that though. -
DeyDurkie5watched this late last night, don't remember much though as I was HAMMERED. Just want an American to show up and actually do respectable.
-
Laley23
Same. The Fisherman has a solid draw, but may face a healthy Juan Martin Del Potro in the 4th rd. If he gets by that round, I look for he and Fed to do battle for the Semis, with Fed winning in 4.DeyDurkie5;1055361 wrote:watched this late last night, don't remember much though as I was HAMMERED. Rodick gets the Joker in the 4th rd. Young gets Nadal in the 3rd.
Harrison opening with Murray is rough, but up a set and on serve.
Not sure on Isner. I dont pay him much attention, cause I think he peaked and will be on the downside of his short career in a year or 2. Just too big to do damage in a best of 5, 2 week tourney. Cant be in shape at 9 feet tall in tennis terms lol. -
Laley23As for doing well. I think if the Americans can win a few matches in the majors, and win some in the tourneys between we could see them seeded by the time the US Open rolls around. That is my hope, and it isnt the likely outcome, but certainly is attainable.

gerb131We pretty much suck at tennis these days.
-
gport_tennisIf novak plays 90% of the level he played last year he will add another major to his bag. I think that will happen in Australia
Isner and fish are the best Americans. Haven't looked at the draws yet -
Laley23
Ill call it now. Isner gets beat by Nalbandian and The Fisherman gets to the last 8.gport_tennis;1055387 wrote:If novak plays 90% of the level he played last year he will add another major to his bag. I think that will happen in Australia

Bigger picture prediction. Rodick has a solid year and is in the top 10 in Flushing and Donald Young is seeded. I think he is 42 now, and 32 get seeded. -
gerb131Why couldn't Tiger been good at tennis?
-
wildcats20Do you have a nickname for everyone? lol
Donald Young is the black guy right? If it's who I am thinking of, I really enjoyed watching him last year at the US Open. -
gport_tennisYes Donald young is the black lefty. He finally showed some promise last year. Growing up through junior tennis he dominated Sam querry who has been a top 25 player for a while
-
Laley23
Yes it is.wildcats20;1055403 wrote:Do you have a nickname for everyone? lol

He finally seems to have his head on straight and put it together mid year last season. Hopefully it continues. My favorite American after Rodick, since I got to hit with him at a Juniors event in Chicago years ago.
And if you mean me for nicknames, yes. I pretty much make up nicknames for anyone, anywhere lol. -

You play high school ir college tennis? -
Laley23
Nah. Tried to walk on for soccer at Indiana. Almost made it. But tennis was always my last sport. I played on the summer circuit in HS, and when I was a SR, I hit with Young and his friend. It was literally just a warm-up, we were paired on the same court. Never played him though. I wasnt good enough to be at any big event at all. Havent played tennis since 2005, my SR year.gport_tennis;1055415 wrote:You play high school ir college tennis?
EDIT, yes I did play tennis in HS. Played at Maumee Valley and made States as a SR in Doubles. Blew 5-1 leads in both sets and got bounced. Really disappointing end to a really solid year.
Our team lost to the eventual champs (maybe runners up, Elida). Came down to out 1st singles versus theres (also won state or was runner up) in a 3rd set breaker. 2 of the most disappointing moments of my tennis life. -
Hulk SmashThe drought for American men at majors will continue through the 2012 calendar year.
Would be nice to see Del Po come all the way back from his injury.
Hopefully the semis will have at least one participant whose first name is not Roger, Rafael, Novak or Andy. -
DeyDurkie5andy roddick is such a bitch...hate that he is american
-
gport_tennisI like andy a lot. 4 a person with such a limited game he has done very well for himself. why the hate ?
-
Hulk SmashI meant the Andy from the other side of the pond. We probably don't have to worry about seeing our Andy in slam semis these days.
-
chicago510Just turned on the Fish match, what the hell?
-
daveIt's pretty sad how far American tennis and golf have fallen both in mens and womens.
-
davelol Fish bounced in straights
-
Laley23Fish played horrible. WTF.
Id say we are about 3 years from seeing Americans competiting again. The young group has the talent, but so did Rodick and Fish. Other than Rodick (who would have 5 slams, imo, without Roger) Fish never was able to do it. Ginepri couldnt, Blake couldnt. So many couldnt.
Hopefully Young and Harrison and the others CAN! -

Was this the "Coaches Team Tournament"? When I played they only had one division, sucks because we would have won our region easily and would have loved to see what we would have done at state.Laley23;1055421 wrote:Our team lost to the eventual champs (maybe runners up, Elida). Yeah, the OTCA I think its called. We were Division II, but knocked of St. John's that year. Really loaded team. Just like soccer, we were #2 in state and had to play #1 and lost earlier than needed be.Sonofanump;1056548 wrote:Was this the "Coaches Team Tournament"? We lost to Toledo St. John's also, but were division 2. Our #1 only had one loss, to a guy name Jim Thomas.Laley23;1056585 wrote:Yeah, the OTCA I think its called.
