Reds Trade Yonder Alonso to San Diego
-
Azubuike24Remember last year when the Brewers traded for an ace who was 2 years removed from sitting out almost a year and a half for serious depression? How did that turn out? To say Latos is a risk because of his "attitude" is of the same idea that the Reds should dump Joey Votto and the Brewers should dump Zack Greinke.
Volquez is far worse in-terms of attitude than Latos. It sucks giving up some talented players, but I'm glad they at least took the risk. The team that was on paper before this trade was NOT winning anything. -

Devin Mesoraco? The best catching prospect in the majors? Hanigan won't even be with the Reds in 2 years.charliehustle14;1018169 wrote:Hanigan is not as young as you think and his offensive production is vastly overrated. Grandal will be missed in a couple years IMO. -
jordo212000PS I don't care what Latos' splits are outside of Petco. I say that is a fluke more than anything. The park is huge, his stats should be better. And him going from cavernous Petco to the Smallpark scares me.
That said, getting an ace is huge! -

Ya I think you're forgetting about mesoraco -

Who the heck ever suggested that the Reds dump Votto? SMH @ them.Azubuike24;1018176 wrote:Remember last year when the Brewers traded for an ace who was 2 years removed from sitting out almost a year and a half for serious depression? Grienke and Latos are comparable in terms of mental make-up and ability, but I don't think it works out as well for the Reds as it did the Brewers. At least how well it worked out for them last year. -

He's saying if you dumped players for having an attitude.... -

Not at all. Nothing wrong with having Mesoraco and Grandal as your 1-2. Not to mention if Votto bolts when his next contract is up, both Devin and Grandal have a background at playing 1st.SportsAndLady;1018193 wrote:Ya I think you're forgetting about mesoraco -

I dunno, it just seems like alot to give up for a guy. Maybe I'm just not used to the Reds actually having prospects to trade.justincredible;1018132 wrote:Why not? He'll be blocked by Mesoraco for a long time, hopefully.
Alonso was blocked by Votto.
Boxberger is a bullpen guy. Not hard to replace.
Volquez. Fuck him.
I still like the trade. Latos is a stud and only 24 years old. We have him for the next 4 years. Cueto, Latos, Leake is a fantastic top 3. -
charliehustle14
I was going to say...that would be pretty ludocrous if a Reds fan had actually suggested that. They would have to be a closet Cubs fan or something.Midstate01;1018195 wrote:He's saying if you dumped players for having an attitude.... -
Midstate01I'm starting to sweeten up to the deal. We gave up a lot, but often times you have to overpay to get a top starter.

I imagine the Reds expect Soto to be ready, if in fact Votto does go. However, Mesoraco hasn't proven himself at the Major League level yet, which kinda scares me. Grandal was a good back up plan.charliehustle14;1018196 wrote:Not at all. Nothing wrong with having Mesoraco and Grandal as your 1-2. Azubuike24The Reds gave up a lot, but instead of just looking at the quality of what they gave up, look at what these guys would have given the Reds going forward. It can be argued that 3 of the 4 are immediately replaced/upgraded before even getting Latos. Sure, they gave up assets, but assets are only that if you use them. The smartest way to use them is to acquire a need.
Believe me, I love Alonso. I wished like hell he was a viable left-fielder because he's a middle of the order hitter. He would crush it in GABP. But he simply can't, and in-order to win now, he's not taking 1B over Votto. -
charliehustle14
Yeah losing Grandal is what kills me. Alonso is hard to part with but he had no future at 1B with the Reds with Votto there. It was nice knowing we had 2 of the top 4 catching prospects in baseball in our system, both with a background at playing 1st. Definitely a very nice insurance policy at the catching position along with 1B down the road.se-alum;1018200 wrote:I imagine the Reds expect Soto to be ready, if in fact Votto does go. Yea, I don't mind moving Alonso at all. If the Reds thought he could ever be a viable option in left, they wouldn't have traded him. The only piece I'm not real keen on giving up was Grandal, but like Midstate said, this deal is starting to grow on me. The important thing is, Latos was as good away from Petco, as he was at Petco. That's important when you trade for a Padres pitcher.Azubuike24;1018204 wrote:The Reds gave up a lot, but instead of just looking at the quality of what they gave up, look at what these guys would have given the Reds going forward. charliehustle14BTW, I fully expect Volquez to return to a 17 game winner as a result of PETCO. Damn shame...couldn't happen to a worst guy.

Midstate01Jocketty says they are working on another pitching trade. Plus because of the trade have some extra money to spend. He says some offensive guys have made it known they want to play at gabp

Walks count the same in big parks as little ones.... -
zach24ozI like getting Latos in this trade, but we couldn't at least get back a decent prospect? We gave up I'd say 2 or 3 of our best young players and Volquez. Now we still need to get a 3B and a LF. Now the Reds lineup has taken a hit without Alonso getting some ABs. So is Heisey going to run LF for now and try to get through with Scotty Rolen? Still have some more things to get done to get the team better than last year IMO.

I really think Votto will bolt once his contract is up, but that's down the road. With Pujols leaving St. Louis, the Cubs rebuilding and the Brewers losing Fielder (Sorry Pitt, not much to say about you guys), the Reds HAD to make a move if they want to make a run at the Central next year, imo. They have talent on the roster, but have clearly needed that "Go-to" Ace on the mound for a while. Volquez was a tool - one great year and that's it. (And we gave-up Hamilton, smh). Cueto and Leake can be studs, and I like Bailey a lot too. Of course, that's just me.
Would've liked this trade better without Grandal, but the Reds will be just fine. I expect there will be other additions/moves. I really think the Reds FO (Walt Jocketty) knows they need to take advantage of a suddenly weakened Central Division, and will (try to, at least) do so. -
Azubuike24You could argue Volquez had negative value. The Reds actually dumped some payroll getting rid of him. I'm definitely intrigued by them talking about another pitcher. Right now, without any moves, they have a pretty full staff.
Cueto
Latos
Leake
Arroyo
Bailey
Travis Wood is still in the mix, as is Chapman I guess. -
charliehustle14
True, but it's also easier to throw strikes when you pitch in a cavernous park like PETCO knowing not every mistake will result in a jack. Plus it's easier to not get burnt by the ole base on balls.Midstate01;1018211 wrote:Walks count the same in big parks as little ones....
BTW, the only reason I said that was because it seemed like Volquez's only good start last year came at Petco. -
zach24ozLook at how different Aaron Harang looked pitching in PetCo. He was a completely different pitcher bc of all the room he could work with. I like hearing that they are looking for some more pitching, but I would love for them to land a good bat with some pop in the lineup.

I really hope they leave Chapman in the bullpen. We need a closer, and what's scarier than a closer who can top 105 MPH in the bottom of the 9th? I really like Wood, mostly because he's a lefty. Has pretty good stuff too.Azubuike24;1018219 wrote:You could argue Volquez had negative value. The Reds actually dumped some payroll getting rid of him. I think Arroyo will be moved sometime in the near future. Didn't he lead the leagues in homers given-up? I know he had 46, which a ton even if it's not the most. -
jordo212000Consolidate Bailey and Wood for a bat now

Hard pressed to get anyone to take on Arroyo's contract.OhioStatePride2003;1018236 wrote:I really hope they leave Chapman in the bullpen.
