Reds Off-Season Thread

Since the Mariners don't want to win baseball games, can I join the reds bandwagon with you guys?

I think it makes sense. I root for Seattle in the AL and cincinnati in the NL.

So....can I play with you guys?

Get the M's to trade us King Felix for Dusty and you are in.

    Reds sign Willie Harris

    Can't wait to see him 325 AB with a .310 OB%

It's just safe to say Heisey will never get a fair chance in Cincy.
  • Azubuike24
    Heisey's 600 AB's = 170 strikeouts.

If your gonna project those numbers, he would also project to 30+ HR's and 100+ rbi's.

I'd say I'm somewhere in between on the Heisey stuff. He hasn't really got a Drew Stubbs-type opportunity to play. I honestly think he was really hurt by the Reds when they called him up and let him rot on the bench. It is so hard to get any kind of consistency watching Jonny Gomes and Fred Lewis be the players they have been their entire careers.

However with that being said, when Heisey gets his opportunity to play, he has to be a little more consistent. I guess I can't fault Reds for having a back-up plan. Consistency has been his big problem.

I don't care about the strikeouts from him or anybody else. If you bring enough other skills to the table, then I can put up with them. I'm not naive. I know how few good left fielders actually exist. Unless you're lucky to have one of the top 5-10 left fielders in the league on your team, you can be sure the guy is going to have warts. You just have to pick which wart is more desirable.

That's great. However, the Reds won't go anywhere with Bruce, Heisey, Stubbs, Mesoraco (will K 125-150 times on 600-AB projection) and Juan Francisco (God forbid he have to play any regular time at 3B, he's the worst K'er of them all) would be brutally inconsistent.

That's all fine....and I agree, but we all know how Dusty will find ways and retarded reasons to play Willie Harris ridiculously too much.

Stubbs K's more than Francisco, and it's really not that close. Between AAA and the Majors, Francisco K'd 27% of the time, Stubbs is at a 33% clip. Heisey is around 28%. Meso I'm not worried about, since he's only at about a 20% K rate. I'm much more worried about Stubbs ability to produce than I am Heisey.

I don't even count Stubbs. He's too far out of anyone else's world.

Which is why I think the Reds are in much greater need of a center fielder than a left fielder. This has to be Stubbs last opportunity to prove he's worth keeping.

They just got rid of Sappelt. Their already thin in the OF. Stubbs, like him or not, is under team control for 3 more years, will not cost a lot in arbitration and still has upside. He's going to be a Red for at least 3 more seasons...if not much longer. Lets just hope he gets better. For a team who is "going for it", I don't see them being able to afford a Stubbs-bust out and pay for an upgrade without significantly shifting their course for contention.

Even with the moves they have made, I think the Reds will need a "surprise" year from somebody to be a serious threat. Hopefully that guy is Stubbs, unfortunately he hasn't shown any progression toward being that guy.
  • Azubuike24
Even so, and I agree, nothing is a lock, the ownership/management is commited, or "all-in" should we say. Thus, Stubbs is going to have a longer leash because being able to drop him, find an upgrade and still have the depth to try for it all, is going to be very difficult.

Then again, this is Jocketty. Even after the trades, the Reds still probably have a top 15 farm system. Would he consider St. Louis style and absolutely gut the system? He did it just prior to the Cardinals winning their first World Series. They spent a vast majority of the 2000's with one of the bottom 5 systems in MLB, yet still managed to have far more success than the Reds. Obviously money matters as well. Either way, it will be interesting. A lot of storylines entering this season.

    John Fay @johnfayman
#Reds acquired from INF Wilson Valdez form Phillies LHP Jeremy Horst and signed Masset to a 2-year contract, avoiding arbitration.

What does anything think of the madsen money that he gets paid 2 million after the season in november, and again 2 milion next november where he may not even be a part of the team?

I know deferred money isnt uncommon practice. They will be paying griffey for quite awhile. My question goes to as to why they feel they needed to do this on only an 8 million dollar one year contract. Am I reading too much into it? Its like if they cannot afford to pay him 8 million in money this year is there truly money issues? It is almost like when tv offers something for TWO payments of 20 bucks. Seriously, if you have to make payments on a 40 dollar item do you really need it?

Just wondering..I am probably looking too far into it.
  • IggyPride00
With the Prince Fielder contract yesterday does management start shopping Votto soon? There clearly is no way to keep him, and everyday he gets closer to free agency the deals will get smaller as far as what comes back in return.

What is the vibe down there in Cincy now? Having lived through this situation with CC and Cliff Lee I am well aware that it is always in the back of the team and fans minds as the season approaches.
  • Midstate01
It sucks that basically the reds have to deal him. And they just traded away Alonzo. The good news would be they should be able to get something good out of him.
  • Midstate01
With Ludwick and then valdez, doesn't that put the reds at 41??

Yea, Ludwick deal not "official" till they make room on the 40 man.
