Boxing vs MMA

Two combat sports, which do you prefer and why? What don't you like about the other? This should be interesting to see how much of the OC is a fan of either or neither, discuss.

I prefer boxing. I've always enjoyed it and followed it closely. Unfortunately, the sport goes as the Heavyweight division goes and since it has sucked for years or lacked star power......it just seems that people are down on the sport. I will agree that all of the BS that prevents great matchups from happening is annoying. Some of my favorite fights.....Gatti-Ward trilogy, Corrales-Castillo I, the Holyfield-Bowe trilogy. I wish that the majority of people would pay more attention to the weight classes other than heavyweight as there are some great fighters and great fights that have taken place and will take place. There's quality boxing if you can get past the HW division.

To be fair, I never really gave MMA a chance but it just doesn't appeal to me for whatever reason. I know there is a strategy involved and different styles but it just looks like a bar fight to me. I'll take the sweet science over MMA any day.

Big fan of those Gatti/Ward fights as well as the Morales/Barrera fights. What boxing has over MMA is a long history, MMA is a relatively young sport. MMA is much more dynamic to me though and exciting. I hate when all the big fights turn out to be let downs(Haye/Klitschko is an example). It seems to me that there is a bigger gap in talent in boxing than their is in MMA as well. In boxing one or two guys dominate a division while in MMA it is much more competitive and there is a lot more parity. Another thing that bothers me is that there is like 2 big fight cards a year in boxing while MMA is putting on 2 cards a month that are 10-12 fights deep which are all entertaining.

    MMA.

    It incorporates:

    -Boxing
    -Kickboxing
    -Wrestling
    -Judo
    -Jiu Jitsu
    -Muay Thai
    -Karate

I just find it to be more competitive and exciting to watch.

Also, there's only maybe 2-3 big boxing cards a year. Yes they pull big numbers but MMA puts out quality cards out every month be it the UFC, Strikeforce, Bellator, etc.

Haye-Klitschko was a dud. To be honest, I kinda figured it would be. There just aren't many notable fighters in the HW division and it seems that boxing is judged on how that weight class is doing at the time. I'd like to see the Klitschko boys fight each other but that will never happen.

Even that Pacquaio/Mosley fight, Mosley tasted Pac's power in the first few rounds and then avoided the fight for the majority of the remainder of the fight. I think that's partially where I get that there is such a gap between the top 1 or 2 guys and everyone else, it's almost too predictable now and there is little parity at the top levels. Plenty of good fights between mid tier fighters on Friday night fights however.

You know where I stand, although I don't dislike boxing. MMA is the best of everything and such a dynamic, competitive sport. For those who have never really given MMA a chance I would highly recommend watching the Cain Velasquez vs Junior Dos Santos on Fox on November 12. The more you watch the sport the more you learn about it and the more it draws you in, I find it fascinating because you have to be so well versed in all aspects of the martial arts. There are so many ways to win/lose a fight in an instant.

    MMA easily for me.
  • hoops23
MMA easily for me as well. Boxing just doesn't have the marquee match-ups that get me hyped up for watching a match anymore. For example, this is my most anticipated fight of the year, by far. I was always a huge Rampage fan, and became a Jon Jones fan when I first saw him fight. Watched him develop from fight #1 to what he is now.

MMA for sure i enjoy boxing but the fights i want to say never happen or happen when someone is over the hill
  • Classyposter58
I think boxing is more enjoyable but unless Pacquiao fights Mayweather I won't tune in because these UFC fights are absolutely intense and they're happening all the time. Like listed above, I like watching a big fight night each month and boy are some of those hits devastatingly awesome. Boxing seems to be safely dead with how big MMA is now

Im not a huge fan of either but with the current condition of each sport i dont see how anyone could prefer boxing to MMA. Many big names in all divisions for MMA compared to what....Pac Man and Mayweather in boxing?

If you understood it, you would know that MMA takes a TON more strategy than the "sweet science".

I used to be a huge boxing fan, but being that I am also a huge grappling fan (wrestling, jiu jitsu, judo, etc) I was naturally attracted to MMA when it started. A sport that combined both boxing and grappling was too much fun to watch.

    MMA

Used to be a huge boxing fan when I was younger when guys like Sugar Ray Leonard, Larry Holmes, Tyson, Roberto Duran, etc ruled the day. Also caught a bunch of Ali's fights toward the end of his career. Loved it when Buster Douglas shocked the world against the Invincible Animal (Tyson).

I think what killed it for me was the death of the heavyweight division. MMA is just more fast paced and is a much shorter fight.

I won't argue with that....mainly because I don't watch MMA so you know much more about it than I do. It just doesn't appeal to me enough to learn about it.

As a wrestler, MMA is the easy decision for me. I always pull for all the ex college wrestlers fighting for the UFC. I always found it funny in HS and College when people try to get in a fight they stand up and try to box.

Speaking of anticipated fights, no two fights are bigger than Cain/JDS and Lesnar/Overeem this year.

Unlike boxing, these fights will not disappoint.

I'm pumped for Jones vs Rampage

No doubt! I hope Rampage knocks him out.

I'm pulling for Jones....dude has mad skills and I think Rampage is on the decline.
  • bigdaddy2003
Bones does have skills but the fact that he had a "spy" in Rampage's camp really irks me.

I prefer boxing, but I also like MMA.

Personal opinion but I think Jones/Rampage is bigger than at least 1 of those 2.
