Yanks vs Tribe: Time to separate the men from the boys

  • TBone14
My god Granderson is murdering us. Hopefully he cools down tomorrow. Every Yankee has atleast 2 hits, save for Cerveli with none and Granderson with 3. 17 hits for the Yanks. Not our best tomorrow. Still only counts for one loss, whether its 9-0 or 1-0.

Well, that was a poor game to attend. Oh well. Had a blast anyway, and WOW has that stadium changed promotion/sponsor wise since I was there in 2007. I mean, they are EVERYWHERE!

Either way, CC blew today for us, and theirs was dominant. Hopefully Masterson brings it and Hughes still has "dead arm", aka...I suck at pitching tomorrow. Taking 2/3 from the DBacks, Reds, Yanks would be a huge lift going into the break, assuming they can split the 4 game set at least with Toronto.

Good news is Sox lost, and Tigers trailing the Halos 1-0 in the B8. Haren, from all accounts, has been amazing. It would be doubly huge, since Verlander is going for the Tigers tonight.

fell asleep before the game and just now woke up.....looks like it was a good thing I missed this one....lol

That is so huge. He pitched amazing too, from what I was listening too on the way back to Toledo from Cleveland. Sounds like the run came as a result of a bad call. Leland got tossed, and Verlander was replaced 1 out shy of a CG Loss. But on his way out, he had some words about "horrible, just horrible" umpiring and was tossed as well. Haren was insanely good. I think just gave up 2 hits in a CG SHO.

White Sox lost too, which basically just washed this loss away.

Any clue why Leyland got thrown out? Watching it a bar and no one could tell why he was tossed. We saw the 1st base ump standing close to the Tigers dugout but wasn't sure what blown call(in Leyland's eyes) he was complaining about.

Cord Phleps needs to learn how to turn a DP. It would have been a different game if he had done so.

It wasnt a terrible throw. Santana usually picks that ball
  • HitsRus
Evereybody and their mother's uncle wants to call up Kipnis and send Phelps back down....that might be a good call if we are 10 games out. But with us battling for 1st place, IMO Valbuena would be the better choice because of his defense.

I personally don't think the Tigers will be the Tribe's issue. I think it will be the White Sox. Detroit's pitching, outside of Verlander, basically sucks. They will have to outslug teams down the stretch unless they go out and rent an arm. Chicago, on the other hand, can pitch...so can the Tribe. Tribe just needs to get the sticks going consistently.

It was a terrible throw. It wasn't a short hop that is easily scoopable, the ball hit Santana around his stomach. The blame can only be placed on Phelps.

That throw was garbage. A major league 2B should be able to at least short hop the double play turn to the 1B when the runner isn't even bearing down on him. Honestly, I have seen enough of Phelps for now. I'm not saying he won't be a major leaguer, but with this team still in contention we can't afford to have some kid fucking it up at 2B making 5 errors in 11 games, and choking a double play turn to get out of the inning with the score still tied 0-0.
  • bases_loaded
So now all the tribe needs is a right handed every day outfielder(2 if they can trade Grady) and an everyday second baseman. Is it Kipnis' turn yet?

Valbuena would definitely be a big improvement defensively over Phelps. And he is killing it offensively too.

I say bring Kipnis up. He's 24 he's not a kid and he's hitting well with power. I don't know much about his defense tho. Cord Phelps is just not a major league player.

Agree. Phelps had his chance. O Cab is hitting much better these days and someone else should get a chance.

    Is wooball Terry Pluto?
It's time for the Indians to once again change their infield.

Cord Phelps should be sent back to Class AAA Columbus, with the Indians promoting Jason Donald.

That's a move they can make right now. During next week's All-Star break, they can decide if it's time to turn second base over to Jason Kipnis.

This is not about blaming all the Tribe's recent defensive problems on Phelps -- or to say he's the reason the Tribe lost to the Yankees at Progressive Field on Tuesday night.

But All-Star Asdrubal Cabrera is dragging, having played all 84 games this season. He is battling a sore knee and tender ankle. He left Tuesday's game in the fourth inning.

Yes, veteran Orlando Cabrera played short for 16 years, but the Indians view him as a second baseman at age 36. He was at third Tuesday and dropped an over-the-shoulder catch on a tricky pop-up down the line. It was correctly scored a double, but a good third baseman makes the play. Orlando Cabrera never played that position until last month.

An average second baseman turns what should have been an inning-ending double play in the second inning. The bases were loaded when Yankee catcher Francisco Cervelli hit a grounder to Asdrubal Cabrera at short. He made an easy flip to Phelps at second for one out, but Phelps threw the ball to first in the dirt.

It was knocked down by Carlos Santana, so there was no error.

    And also no double play.

And the poor throw led to four more New York runs. Carlos Carrasco lost his cool and began throwing batting practice after the mistake. So the pitcher is an innocent party in that five-run inning.

A middle infielder must catch the ball in the middle of a playoff race, and Phelps hasn't done that. Not with five errors in 11 games heading into Tuesday night. Phelps also was hitting only .200 before the game.

In his first exposure to the majors, it's obvious the 24-year-old Phelps is dealing with the jitters. He would have been cut from his high school team for the type of errors he has made.

The fact is I pushed for Phelps to be promoted from Columbus, partly because I believed he would be a solid second baseman. He had no errors at that spot in 13 games at Columbus -- and only 20 errors in his past 240 games at second since 2009.

This is not to write off Phelps. Most players don't stick in the majors when they receive their first promotion. But it makes sense to send him back to Columbus, especially because the Indians need someone to spell Lonnie Chisenhall at third base when a lefty pitches.

    That would be Donald.

He was being groomed to take over at third -- at least for a while -- in spring training. But he suffered a hand injury. When he came back, there was a knee injury.

Now healthy, Donald is hitting .278 (.752 OPS) at Columbus. He has played 15 games at short and seven at third.

Last season, Donald made three errors in 41 games at second for the Tribe. He also batted .283 (.833 OPS) against left-handed pitching, something that should be valuable for the Tribe.

Then there is Kipnis, who is demanding the Indians pay attention. He was named the Tribe's Minor League Player of the Week, hitting .500 (13-of-26) with three homers at Columbus.

The left-handed-hitting second baseman is batting .305 (.914 OPS) with 11 homers, 50 RBI and 11-of-11 in stolen bases. At some point this season, the Indians were going to "transition" -- their phrase -- Chisenhall to third, Kipnis to second.

That could happen very, very soon.

Radio said they were upset with a call at first base mostly (runner called safe, eventually scored). But that Leyland kept at it during the commercial break and into the next inning. Said he started back up again with a bad ball/strike call and they had had enough. Verlander got tossed because once he was out of the game he didnt care. He went back and relived the bad call and voiced his opinion on the whole game. He was tossed pretty damn quick lol.

haha, nice I hadn't read that article yet, and didn't really think about Donald being the one to get the call up with the way Kipnis is lighting it up. It does sort of make sense though to bring Donald up. He and OC could split 2B duties, spell AC at SS occasionally and he could play 3B to spell the Chiz Kid against tough lefties.
I'd still rather see Kipnis than Donald, but I wouldn't be opposed to Donald or even Valbuena getting the call up and let Phelps go back to AAA to regroup.
