Reds @ Orioles--game 1

The past two series we have seen the 2 best defensive 1st baseman the past decade IMO.

Without his clutch hit we are losing this game.

I'm shocked they gunned down Votto. I didn't even think that would be close

    Recency effect?

???? Votto was hauling ass around third....camera shows ball in air towards cutoff, cutoff takes an extra step...fires quickly and camera goes to catcher and Votto still not in the picture ?????? Did he stop or fall?

I don't know what the hell that means.

It would have been better had Votto K'd rather than hit that weak grounder to force BP who'd I'd rather have seen try to score on that!

    Touchdown Orioles.

    Fabulous location.

Can't say anything other than that this was gift-wrapped by the Reds to the O's. So many missed opportunities. FFS

Bullpen pitched great, but the offense couldn't overcome the four early runs given up by EV!

I think the O's had more failed opportunities than the Reds did.

Recency effect is when you let a recent, positive result supersede weeks/heaps of poor performance.

I was just saying that while it is great he had a nice hit tonight... he has been pretty bad pretty much the whole season. In all honesty if there was a time for him to be due, that time is now because he is long overdue.

Exactly what I was wondering. He must not be very fast? Because even the relay guy didnt make a good throw to home

If it is weeks of poor performance....how can him hitting .300 for weeks be so bad?

    He's due.

That's what I was saying earlier. I mean obviously he isn't a .230 hitter. He's probably a .250-.260 guy. He wasn't nearly as bad as his average suggests.

But even though he has been hitting better, he is still below .240 (or was? It may be above that now). Just speaks to how poorly he was hitting.
  • Ironman92
I know how poorly he was hitting...I watch every game. I not sure he's not a .230 hitter. Whether he's due or not, you can't really cry foul now as he's been formidable of late. Jay Bruce was Babe Ruth in May....but he's been awful in June? All I know is the Reds were doing fine when Janish was struggling....since he's been hitting fairly well the offense sucks. In that time Votto, Bruce, Phillips batting averages all dropped. If the middle of the order is doing well...the offense does well. How'd the Reds score today? Janish is far from great.....but IMO he is pretty much just an 8 hitter. Bring up Cozart, maybe he'll be the difference...but guys from the minors seldom are.
  • jordo212000
Yeah not really crying foul at all. Just tired of watching us lose. You're right the middle of the order has definitely cooled down. It seems like if Votto or Phillips does "something" offensively, we win. But even though they have 'struggled' they are still putting up good seasonal numbers. Slumps and dryspells happen.

However when I see guys like Renteria and Janish struggling to hit .240 and providing average defense, I'm going to begin looking for ways on how I think we can improve. That tandem has a lot of errors this year, and the way I see it, Cozart can't hit any worse than Janish or Renteria, so why not bring him up?

The offense has been sputtering and the team needs to explore every opportunity that they can for improvement.

I think his ankle, that he hurt May 6th, really handicapped him. He came back too quick, on only the 5th day, and did not go on the DL like he probably should have. May 11th thru May 27th he went just 2 for 45. I think that rather than "recency effect" you are suffering from selective memory of the May 11 to May 27 period. You take out that 2 for 45 stretch, and he is hitting a very respectable .285, plenty good enough to justify playing him with his defensive value.

Renteria went 7 for 49 (.143) in the May 6th to May 28th period, and then was out for his back several games after that. they played short at SS for two periods there. I think they should have brought up Cozart the next day after Janish' ankle sprain, then kept him up and put Renteria on the DL with his back. A perfect time to get Cozart a test in MLB.

You might be right, but let's also remember that he is a career .228 hitter. I'm not sure how much slack I am willing to give him. Meaning that I'm not certain it was his ankle issue causing his problems, it was just that he isn't a great hitter.

If they cant score more than 4 runs off that nobody they dont deserve to win. I have a feeling were gonna be below .500 pretty soon here.

Yanish is a good two out, RISP hitter according to his average....but I dont know the sample size but could look it up.

I get pissed wwatching a 12 inning game and they lose. I will watch a 66 inning game if they win but man...that sucks. It is like a buddy of mine says he doesnt mind getting drunk as fuck watching the steelers but when they lose it makes it all not worth it.

Didnt get to see much of the game early, but eV looked so have a bad line. Again.

he is so very frustrating. It is to the point, and has been for awhile, that of the normal rotation PLUS Wood I have the least faith in EV than all of them. If I had to have a win I think he would be my 6th choice right now. Maybe 7th.

As I said on Wed afternoon...the reds are nothing but a tease. Tuesday night they flashed their ta tas and snatch only to cover it back up without letting us touch.
