Top 10 Hitters in MLB

  • Ironman92
I've done one of these for about 5 years now and for the most part most of us agree and teh top 5 or so are pretty obvious......but this year IMO is the hardest ever to do a top 10 hitters.

Losing some with age: Vlad, Ichiro, Helton, Chipper, Jeter, Arod

Not having the year we expect....often injury: Pujols, Teixeira (hitting .250) David Wright, Zimmerman, Longoria, Mauer, Morneau, Hamilton, Utley, Hanley

Others are doing well...but have been rough for a while before this season for different reasons: Reyes, Fielder, Granderson, Berkman

SO.....using whatever you feel to be the best criteria....List your Top 10 Hitters in MLB and give me up to 5 honorable mentions......hopefully we can get enough opinions and I'll tally them up and give the results.

    Mine:

    1. Albert Pujols
    2. Miguel Cabrera
    3. Joe Mauer
    4. Adrian Gonzalez
    5. Joey Votto
    6. Robinson Cano
    7. Ryan Braun
    8. Jose Bautista
    9. Carlos Gonzalez
    10. Josh Hamilton

Honorable Mentions: Jose Reyes, Matt Kemp, Lance Berkman, Ichiro, Andre Ethier

I'd prefer you at least do your own top 10 before bashing mine....but whatever.

    obvious omission is obvious.

Before I do this, I forget if we use previous years or not? Obviously, not like 10 years ago, but Ichiro is no where near top 20 this year, but if you include last season, even with struggles, I put him top 10. Either way, Ill have mine after work, around 8 tonight.

I agree. Without UGGLA, no list has meaning.

Or more seriously, if we're doing current hitters and their current production, Bautista has earned his way near the top. He used to be crap, last year he added mad power, this year he's even hitting for average. I suck at doing Top 10 lists, so I'm just giving suggestions based on guys I think deserve recognition.

    1) Adrian Gonzalez
    2) Miguel Cabrera
    3) Albert Pujols
    4) Jose Bautista
    5) Prince Fielder
    6) Joey Votto
    7) Robinson Cano
    8) Ryan Braun
    9) David Ortiz
    10) Josh Hamilton

I do think Morneau and Mauer are both Top 10 guys but I omitted them because of health. Other near misses for me were Kemp, Teixera (BA way down), Ethier, Granderson, Tulo, McCann, and obviously Paul Janish. Reyes is having a great year but I left him off based on what his numbers usually are.

Janish and Renteria are 1, 2 in my book.

    1. Miggy
    2. Pujols
    3. Adrian Gonzalez
    4. Mauer
    5. Votto
    6. Cano
    7. Hamilton
    8. Bautista
    9. V-Mart
    10. Braun

HM: Ichiro, Prince, Justin Upton, Adam Jones, CarGo, Tulo, Holliday, Kemp, Ethier, Gaby Sanchez

Tough. Real tough this year. Ichiro was my #1 the last 2 years I think, and I dropped him to HM just behind Braun. Just is getting up there in age, and so you have to wonder if the slide is going to right itself or not. Some other "surprises" are based on age more than anything. Upton, CarGo, Sanchez, and most notably Adam Jones. But Jones has all the talent in the world and his average has steadily gone up every year he has played, and he is just under .300 for this year I think. So I kind of went that way with the HM, guys who have shown flashes and have steadily gotten better as they have gotten older as opposed to proven guys who are on the decline.

Thoughest part was leaving Morneau, Longoria, Tex, A-Rod etc off the list. But they are just SOOOOO far off their typical year I can put them in a top 10 at the moment. I know its due to injury in most cases, but either way, they are off.

I had to edit mine as I somehow forgot Bautista and Matt Kemp....not like I was at a game where they were playing right in front of me or anything.

I feel you have to consider past results but how far and how much is up to each person.....Pujols has a huge extra credit for doing it so well so long.....but right now for me it was like Tiger Woods holding on to the #1 ranking even though he wasn't playing very well.

SMDH, I forgot Bautista as well. I gotta edit mine now.

Shouldn't you omit Pujols then because of health?
  • Ironman92
Pujols has done it way longer at a higher level and even this year is a higher level than those players.
  • Green Giggy
Tulowitzki has got to be on the list. Little down right now, but the guy is a beast.
  • Con_Alma
    Ironman...

I agree but if you omit a player due to health you can't leave one in who has a fractured arm can you? If he can't produce right now he can't very well be a top hitter at this time. Can he.
  • charliehustle14
How many games has Pujols missed up to this point so far this year? How many games has Pujols missed in his career? I think he's had 3 or 4 trips to the DL in his career. Despite those trips, he still came back fine and put up the same ridiculous numbers. Morneau missed the end of the 2009, a majority of 2010, and has sucked in 2011 thus far. Mauer has missed less time than Morneau, but has been out all of this year til his return a week ago....so he's been out of sight, out of mind for me this year. Mauer, when healthy, would probably fall into the 8-10 range for me. And as other posters have stated, Pujols' amazing sustained success does give him some extra credit.
  • Con_Alma
It's opinion so there's not any incorrect criteria. I just took it as right now from one of the posts.
