"Greatest Living Ballplayer"

  • killdeer
periodically, when another baseball legend passes, baseball fans hearken back to the golden age of the game and wonder..."who is the reigning greatest living ballplayer?..."...and the honor is passed on to the next HOFer...

Ted Williams held the title for quite a number of years until his timely demise and cryogenesis...

    my vote...
    1. Mays
    2. Musial
    3. Aaron...

    discuss...

    These!

I would put Johnny Bench and Pete Rose in the discussion as well.

    Ty Cobb?
    Babe Ruth?
    Honus Wagner?
    Chris Sabo?

Just as a plug for the younger guys:

    Pujols
    A-Rod
    Clemens
    Bonds
    Maddux
    Unit
    Schilling
    etc.

Fall in love with old guys all you want but there are plenty of guys under 50 who could be considered.
  • Azubuike24
Overall game, the answer will be Willie Mays as long as he's living.
  • Con_Alma
    Mays in my eyes.

Speed, glove, arm, and hitting for power and average.

...all around player for a long time.

I would like to add Ken Griffey Jr. to the top of this list.

We weren't asked who we would consider in order to get to our conclusion. We were asked the result of our consideration.

Loving an old player just happened to play no part in my personal opinion.

Yeah, whatever, that's why etc. is at the bottom of the list. There is no 1, 2, 3--just names off the top of my head. I'm sure I left many good names out. You got one of them.

    Mays

    Musial
    Aaron
    Pujols
    Rose
Bonds (would probably be #1, if not for the roids)

Pitchers: Thats a whole other list, and you have to really take a look at the eras and parks the older guys played in. Clemens or Nolan Ryan would probably top my list (though I admit, Im not 100% sure who is still alive from the older days).
  • Con_Alma
    Pujols
    A-Rod
    Clemens
    Bonds
    Maddux
    Unit
    Schilling

This is a pretty good list and the addition of Griffey makes sense.

3 of those guys need * by their names and most likely will not be in the HOF.

My vote goes to Willie Mays, but my biased vote wants to at least add Tom Seaver into the discussion.

Sandy Koufax and Frank Robinson should at least crack the top 10 or so.
  • norwalk
I believe Aaron even said Mays was the greatest he had ever seen.

You could always do it by position.

    1b - Pujols
    2b - Morgan
    SS - Banks
    3b - Schmidt
    LF - Rose
    CF - Mays
    RF - Aaron
    P - Maddux
    RP - Rivera

    I guess I forgot catcher.......Bench

    P - Maddux
I would argue that Seaver should be on this list over Maddux, but its close:

    MADDUX

    355 wins
    3.16 ERA
    3371 Ks
4 Cy Young Awards (1 runner up)
    8 All Star Games

    SEAVER

    311 wins
    2.86 ERA
    3640 Ks
    3 Cy Young Awards (2 runner-up)
    12 All Star Games

You can discredit Clemens cause of the steroids stuff, but numbers wise, he can easily make the claim as #1.

    Clemens:
    354 Wins
    3.12 ERA (12 years with a sub 3 ERA and 2 years with a sub 2)
    4672 Ks
    7 Cy Young (1 runner up, 2 #3) and 1 MVP (1 #3)
    11 All Star Games
