Game 40 - St. Louis Cardinals (Chris Carpenter) at Cincinnati Reds (Travis Wood)

  • Azubuike24
Reds go for the sweep as they defend first place for the first time in almost a month. These two met three weeks ago in St. Louis, and the Reds won the game although neither factored in the decision.

Jonny Gomes went 0 for 4 with a strikeout today. He's now batting .186 with 37 strikeouts, which is 10th in the National League. He's now 11 for his last 72 and since April 16th he has 4 RBI's. His drought is too an all-time high lever and it's really time to start looking elsewhere, especially given the current lineup with Rolen hitting 6th.

Tomorrow against Carpenter I'd like to see...

    CF Stubbs
    LF Lewis
    1B Votto
    2B Phillips
    RF Bruce
    3B Rolen
    C Hernandez
    SS Janish
    P Wood

Heisey in LF would be alright as well, but if Phillips hits 4th and Rolen 6th, Heisey and/or Lewis should hit at the top of the order and Janish should be moved down.

I like your lineup with Lewis in there. Heisey hasn't impressed from the starting role and Lewis has looked good in just about every situation so far.

How can Heisey be given a fair evaluation on how he plays as a starter?
  • dave
    Hanigan will be catching Wood.

Anyone know the numbers for Renteria and Janish vs Carp? Hell, they will probably both be in there. I'd imagine Rolen gets a day off.

I'm just saying, his numbers as a starter in his career suck. Sub-.200 batting average, I believe.
  • Ironman92
How many starts though? Has he ever played and started for 15 out of 20 games?

Has he 3 starts in a 5 game span this year?

We've seen guys like Corey Patterson, Royce Clayton and Willy Taveras be at the very bottom of baseball in key offensive categories and be given so many chances we all wanted to shoot ourselves. I think we know as much about Heisey as we did Janish at this time last year.

Dusty gives hid weak excuse of how his swing only works on certain pitchers....then how did he even get to the majors?

I would imagine that Lewis would get the start in LF tomorrow to get another left handed batter in the lineup against Carpenter. And wasn't Heisey their best prospect at one time? It's not like the guy gets enough starts to get in a groove...he starts maybe 2 games a week. Might decrease now with Lewis hitting the ball now.

Just as long as Gomes is not in there. Dude is batting .189 right now (possibly lower after today). Tired of watching him pop up and K all the time.

Hey, I'm not opposed to Heisey starting at all. I'd much rather he be out there than Gomes. I'm just not gonna get my hopes up and think he's going to do much in that role. If he does, obviously that's great, I'm just not expecting much.

The Reds are pretty good and are pretty good with Gomes in LF...but we saw what crappy plate approaches get you in the playoffs and versus very good pitchers.

I don't expect Heisey to set the league a blaze...but believe he can do more to help the Reds win and just wonder why he is almost always the odd man out?

    Stubbs cf
    Janish ss
    Votto 1b
    Phillips 2b
    Bruce rf
    Rolen 3b
    Lewis lf
    Hernandez c
    Wood p

This Rolen at #6 stuff makes the bottom a little stronger.....but I'd much rather Phillips be 2nd and Rolen 4th. If Renteria were in for Janish it would be a little more reasonable. But for all purposes.....I want Phillips 2nd and Rolen 4th.......

But of course Dusty turning down a chance to bat the CF 1st and the SS 2nd is like many of us turning down sex.

I'm pretty sure Phillips/Votto/Rolen in that order were pretty key in making the playoffs

Phillips has done a much better job of not trying to hit everything out from the 4 hole this year. I don't really want him to stay there. But I do like this lineup and makes the lineup look really deep.

I think it's funny the cards are complaining and crying about Phillips homer yesterday. I didn't see him do anything he doesn't usually do. Nothing more then when Jay hit his for them and threw his bat.

Back to back shots for the Cardinals and its 2-0, followed by a double. Not looking good for Wood after a good first inning.

Did FOX Ohio just accidentally show HOF Marty Brennaman flipping off someone after catching that foul ball? It was not a perfect angle but he either flipped someone the bird on live tv or he had two fingers up signifying something else.

I'm out watching it so I can't go back, but it definitely looked like he was giving someone the bird. Was waiting for someone to say something cause I wasn't sure.

I think Phillips is a very good type for a #2 hitter with the things he does very well. I feel Rolen fits the mold of a #5 hitter and the current Reds really don't have a true cleanup hitter.

IMO Phillips #2, Rolen #4, Janish #7 or #8 is better than Janish #2, Phillips #4, Rolen #6

    Possible #2 hitters :
    Phillips
    Renteria
    Lewis
    Cairo
Janish would be my 5th choice.

    Possible #6 hitters:

    Hernandez
    Heisey
    Lewis
    Renteria
    Bruce
    Cairo
    Janish
    Rolen....probably my 8th choice
  • Ironman92
I do agree that Phillips is our 2nd best choice in the 4 hole and if someone is hitting well and makes sense in the 2 hole I have little problems as long as Phillips keeps going the other way and not trying to be Jeff Kent
  • Ironman92
HR number-wise I mean ...... But Kent was so productive cause he actually went the other way better than most anyone.
  • Ironman92
Welsh being tough from the booth!
  • SportsAndLady
    Damn Votto

He's too good to strikeout lol

Wouldn't be surprised if he did. Marty is notorious for his foul mouth. He even admitted as much on the radio yesterday.
  • Ironman92
Now Welsh being stupid. That Stubbs ball took an atrocious bounce on the 2nd baseman. A lucky hit for Stubbs and St Louis defense did nothing wrong.

Who was it on here that laughed at the fact that the Cardinals picked up the washed up Lance Berkman?

    Talk about epic fail.
