What Will Be The Next Huge Career Milestone In Baseball?
-
Ironman92or even for a season?
In 1995 Cal Ripken was followed by a good portion of America.
Seasonal in 1998 Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa were followed like no one has been before.
Rickey Henderson surpassed the runs scored record (which is huge) but not much fanfare was made about it. Bonds and his seasonal and career HR were followed but a small percentage really cared.
What would have to happen for America to follow a chase to a record like they did Cal Ripken in 1995....or even back to Pete Rose's hit record.
Arod is going to give the HR and RBI records a go but he has admitted being a user and has turned off many a fan. Pujols (if he can stay healthy long enough and never be caught/heavily accused of any wrongdoings) could give the HR and RBI records as well.
As far as career records I think maybe only Pujols could get most baseball fans into a chase.
I think it would most likely take a huge seasonal record (hitting streak for sure....over 50 games), hitting .400 (post Sept 15th), triple crown (post Sept 15th)
I think Arod gets to Barry Bonds HR total and people care just a little more than they cared about Bonds passing Aaron. I think if Pujols passed all of them it could get very big....but not as big as McGwire/Sosa in 1998.....sadly. -
thavoiceAgreed.
HR, Wins, SB, RBI, avg, are the things that people reallly follow.
I dont there are any guys who are getting close to the 300 win mark for pitchers.
SB's.....wont see guys getting close to those records with the emphasis on holding runners on and such like the slide step.
HR chase was helped by steroids...and we have no idea about Arod if he really was involved. Pujols.....by all accounts believe is clean but it takes alot of 40 seasons to break the record! -
Laley23Jeter and 4000. I know, he isnt even to 3000 yet, but I think if he doesnt fall flat here in the next couple years, he has a chance at 4000. He will probably need 4 more seasons, plus this one, which puts him at 42 at the time of getting 4000. If that happens, we will hear the call for him to chase Pete down.
-
Laley23and Jeter this summer (or spring more likely) will get quite a bit of following for 3000. He is a Yankee, so he will have fans everywhere, and they sell out away games anyway. That will get pretty big, imo. Nothing like breaking records though, for that, he will need to apprach 4000.

Dude......Jeter wont even sniff 4000. He is horrid this year and some experts feel he is done...his bat speed of gone...and withouth steriods to help these guys get BETTER at older ages that just aint gonna happen -

Jeter won't do it. He's already losing a bit at short. He's close to done. -

You think he'll average 200+ hits a season for the next 5 seasons? -
Ironman92Jeter was my first thought.....and 2 years ago I thought he had a decent shot at 3750+ hits. His bat speed reminds me of how fast Griffey's went down...and he's right at the age where it extremely slowed down the statistics of nearly every player in baseball history.....minus some who cheated.
Wasn't too long ago I would've bet on Roberto Alomar getting to 3500.
Jeter has a great year 2 years ago....was not good last year and off to a bad start this year. If he continues to be a .260 hitter this year he will likely only get another off year before he loses his chances....BUT if he can manage to survive the season around .300 with 185 or so hits......he could by some more time.
Right now watching Jeter.....3.500 is about the maximum.....but a month of good hitting would make me change my thoughts as well.
I don't think Jeter going for 3,000 would be anything super special to most. I mean...how many players have we seen got to 3,000? I've seen Henderson, Molitor, Winfield, Gwynn, Boggs, Murray, Ripken, Brett, Yount, Biggio and Palmeiro. -
Laley23I think Jeter will get to 3500, and then the calls for 4000 will be there. Thats all I am getting at. If he can string together a solid year this year, and dont put it past him to get back up to .285 with 190 hits or so, he will have a very good chance at just hanging on at the end.
-
Ironman92I agree....but it's hard to hang on for 900 hits.
-
karen lotzLWJ Jr has 499 career doubles. #500 would be a great milestone for him to pass.
-
BR1986FBDon't really know if it would be considered a "milestone" but we have still as yet to see a "home run cycle" (4 HR's in a game...solo, 2R, 3R & GS), I believe.
-
Ironman92I'm talking a national following.
Chipper had many significant milestones by coming back this year.....500 doubles, 1500 RBI, 1500 runs, 2500 hits -
wildcats20Someone hits 50+ homers WITHOUT PEDs.

The Braves are America's team, mind you.Ironman92;749575 wrote:I'm talking a national following.

gorocks99No love for Jose Bautista?
-
Laley23If Gordon Beckham keeps struggling, you could also see Omar Vizquel get 1500 runs and if he decides to play ANOTHER year, 1000 RBI and 3000 hits are well within reach. With him, it appears he just needs the playing time.

You think Bautista used last year? Or Prince in 2007? -

It was more of a tongue in cheek comment than anything. -

grodtI think Thome getting to 600 should get more attention. Once he gets it there will be 9 guys at 600...and 3 have either tested positive or been linked to juicing. Also, other then Pujols and maybe Miggy, there aren't many active guys with a legitimate shot at it. Basically it could be awhile before we see a "clean" guy get there.
As for what could capture the national attention, a run at .400, Triple Crown, HR record or the Hit Streak. That's about it.
