Reds @ Cardinals...Game 3

  • Ironman92
    Sunday Night Baseball

....but will the weather allow it to happen? Much rain is a little south of St Louis but it appears it could get rough there hours from now.

    Volquez starting?
  • zach24oz
Volquez is scheduled to start the series finale against Jake Westbrook for the Cards. Scotty Rolen has been placed on the 15-Day DL and Chris Valaika was called up to fill his spot since Francisco is on the DL as well. So I'm guessing Cairo gets the start again at 3rd for the Reds and batting 7th. Hope that Heisey gets a start tonight since Gomes has been on a little slump.

    No Heisey, lineup looks like

    Stubbs
    Phillips
    Votto
    Gomes
    Bruce
    Cairo
    Hanigan
    Janish
    Volquez
  • Laley23
EV shuts em down, Phillips hits a double and 2 run HR, Stubbs goes 0-5, my fantasy team loves life.

I'll be surprised if they get this game in tonight.

prediction -- Heisey traded for a 3rd baseman before Lewis comes off the DL onto the roster, and Rolen to the 60 day DL.
  • Ironman92
If Rolen is that bad I believe Janish, Renteria & Cairo can get it done for a good while....but if Gomes and Bruce aren't very good in that time the offense will struggle.

Can't see any way in which that happens.

When Renteria signed was it understood by both parties that he would NOT play 3B? Him not playing there is going to really hamstring the team if they weaken their defense by playing Janish at 3B because role player Renteria refuses to play 3B.

Renteria at SS and Janish at 3rd versus Janish at SS and Renteria at 3rd

Janish is very good at SS....Renteria is a step slow nowadays

Janish at 3rd....might be awesome....Renteria at 3rd....probably a little better than we think

I'd go Janish at SS and Cairo at 3rd 6/10 games.....Renteria at SS and Cairo at 3rd 2/10.......Janish at SS and Renteria at 3rd 3/10......

    essentially....Janish at SS 8/10 games.......Renteria at SS 2/10 games
    Cairo at 3rd 7 out of 10 games....Renteria at 3rd 3/10

Janish plays the most at SS and keeps that position strong defensively....3rd base is going to be average at best regardless and Cairo playing 7 of 10 will keep the old guy fresh and renteria will play 1/2 the games and be a top pinch hitter the other games.

That is a great rotation plan. It keeps Janish at SS in all the games he plays(80% is about right). The key is wiil Renteria play 3B - I say fire him if he won't - no Baker molycottling!

So you don't want Valaika playing at all??

    spell Phillips at 2nd

I'd rather use a guy that has played 3rd base(Valaika), over a guy that has never played 3rd base(Renteria).

If they do that Dusty will still play Renteria often and substantially weaken the defense each time he does. For instance, Cards would be up now if Renteria would be playing SS tonight.

I'll take the uber crafty veteran playing 3rd and being a solid hitter anywhere in the lineup over a guy that is not a good enough hitter to even come close to making the big league roster.

If Valaika is very good at 3rd base then use him as a defensive replacement.

Remember how Ramon Hernandez had never played first base when Votto was out for a while. Hernandez surprised nearly everyone.

I'll always trust the big leaguer over the guy that can only make it do to others being injured.

I don't know mhs95...yes Janish is better at SS, but Renteria made that same play his last start at SS.

But as fast as Westbrook got down the line, I don't think Renteria gets him.
  • mhs95_06
1-0 pitch to Votto was way outside and was called a strike, but Westbrook didn't try to take advantage of it and continues to pitch around Votto.
  • mhs95_06
EV rolling now, but 69 pitches thru 4 innings. Hopefully he can get thru the 5th before the rain sets in.
  • Rotinaj
Volquez dominating so far. Hopefully they can score a run or 2 this inning to give him some breathing room.
  • se-alum
Of course, once again, the Reds are making a soft tosser look like Cy Young.
  • mhs95_06
Did Cairo miss the run sign on 3-2? Or does Dusty think its going to rain and EV's last inning will be the 5th, then rain delay and he starts the 6th with a PH and a new pitcher?
  • justincredible
Great game for those of us that like pitchers duels, but damn, they should be teeing off on Westbrook.
  • se-alum
Cards are treating Votto like he's Barry Bonds...
