Is NASCAR a sport?

I guess you've never seen what he can do behind the wheel of a car!Fly4Fun;706672 wrote:You think Kurt Busch is going to get an off the street 1995 used Ford Taurus up to 170MPH? I don't.
The human participant has to get the most out of the car. You can't just jump in it and push the gas pedal down and expect to be competitive in a race.Fly4Fun;706672 wrote:My point is that the sport does have a human element... but it's more about getting power and energy from something besides the human participant.
The driver plays a more important part in a race than the car does. Whether you want to believe it or not, drivers still have to push themselves throughout a race. It's not just hopping in the car and going. If that was the case, we could all make millions of dollars doing it. It's not that simple.Fly4Fun;706672 wrote:Sports are about humans pushing themselves and seeing what the human body can do. Nascar is based more off of non-human instruments than the other examples I talked about. -

And Jr would have more wins every year!!!! -

Agree, except on darts. There is no real physical interaction between the participants that puts either competitor at risk (I do not count a stray dart here and there).Sonofanump;706679 wrote:Nascar:

I believe sport involves clear parameters for scoring based upon completion of criteria. The gray area is judge athletic events such as gymnastics or figure skating, both of which are highly athletic. The exception to this is a judged event in which you can eliminate your opponent, i.e. boxing, mma... -

Poker:
Sport - Yes
Athletic - No
Monopoly:
Sport - Yes
Athletic - No
FPS (First Person Shooter) Video Games
Sport - Yes
Athletic - No
And again, there's no physical interaction or risk for the competitors which makes the difference for me. -

Home run derby isn't a sport, but baseball is. There are variations to a lot of things that make them different, despite many similarities. It isn't the fact that it is a short race or a long race, it is that the rules are different between the variations. I see no reason to limit the definition with such a general term as "races", when they are all distinctly different events. -
Fly4FunEnigmaax... that list that you quoted has nothing to do with your posts. It was directed at the person that posted the similar style of list with his criteria. I accept that you have your standard... I just believe it is foolish to delineate sports in that manner.

They do pay for it, you do realize this, right?like_that;706427 wrote:Serious question. Not really trying to get GoChiefs and other resident nascar fans' panties in a bunch, but I just wanted to see what people believe, and why they believe that.
I am going to go with no, and I think its a complete waste of gas.
Empty buses running around towns, that is a waste of gas AND my tax money. -
like_thatJust because you pay for it doesn't mean you are not wasting resources lol.
-
MulvaI don't think it's a sport. But it's definitely not something I could do personally.

You can't drive a standard, drive fast and make left turns? -
I Wear PantsI will say yes it's a sport. But the drivers are certainly not athletes. Well I mean they could be but it has nothing to do with them being in NASCAR.
And hell no, we'd all wreck and die for sure. -

You wouldn't ask is NFL a sport. You would ask if football is a sport. -
Gblocki say its a sport, it involves not only things already mentioned like strength and stamina but also HAND EYE COORDINATION. and if fishing is a sport then NASCAR is too.

So what you're saying is, it's so easy you can do it? So you're saying your just retarded because you aren't out there making millions of dollars doing something that's so easy? Got it. -

Sorry changing tires a few times during a race and then watching the guy drive in circles sounds incredibly boring to me. These guys have basic skills that aren't anything special. Changing a tire isn't something i consider a skill so much as a necessity for anyone that drives. Also, I wouldn't want to be associated with "sport" that is supported by someone like you. -
GoChiefsLMAO! Basic skills? rrriiiggghhhttt. Keep trying to convince yourself of that Jr. Like I said, I guess that just makes you the worlds biggest dumbass for not going out and making the easy money then. Keep 'em comin. You look dumber and dumber.

Ha yes i feel like such a dumbass for not being associated with a "sport" (insert homo eye roll emotocon here used by teenage girls) that people associate with fat hill billies, rednecks, beer and trailer parks. Yes i think i'll keep my current job thank you.
