Anways, I really like this hire. As others have already said, a DC with experience will really help out a rookie HC.
I'm sort of meh about this hire.
Here are the defensive rankings (overall) for his defenses where he's coached.
Defense Rankings
1995 - 99 Jacksonville's DC.
1995 - 21st
1996 - 15th
1997 - 23rd
1998 - 25th
1999-2003 (part of 2003) Head Coach of Chicago Bears
99- 29th
00 - 16th
01 - 15th
02 - 25th
2004-2005 Detroit Lions DC
04 - 22nd
05 - 20th
2006-2009 (part of 2009) Head Coach of Buffalo Bills
06- 18th
07 - 31st
08 - 14th
09 - 19th
Yes, most of those are better than Cleveland's rankings have been, but there also isn't one top 10 year in all that coaching.
We better hope the switch to the WCO yields lots of points. -
hoops23Writer, if you wouldn't mind, what were his rankings in terms of PPG allowed?

His teams were usually pretty solid in terms of PA, which imo, is obviously the more important stat. -
hoops23And just because I was curious, I looked up some stats for a certain defensive guru and how he fared during one of his worst tenures of his career as a DC:
1984- 16th
1985-26th
1986-23rd
1987-24th
1988-16th
1989-7th
199019th
1991-28th
That was for the Bengals when there was only 28 teams in the league. The guy is currently a DC on another AFC North team.
In the end, you need the players. The Browns have some pieces, but they still need more. -

I'm pretty sure stats wouldn't back up your claim.
I loved rob Ryan as much as anybody, but his defensive rankings have NEVER been that great. I'd sometimes get frustrated with his inability to adapt to a game. Our defense could not get pressure on anybody, yet he'd continue to try and blitz while our secondary is getting burnt.
Also, the Browns had trouble stopping teams when they needed too.
IMO, as much as I liked the guy, he's a bit overrated as a DC, just because of who his brother is.
Think his defensive rankings may not be up to snuff because he has been employed by two of the worst franchises in the league (Raiders & Browns)? And yes, before you say anything, the Bengals are also among the worst. So let's get that out of the way.
Ryan is a good coordinator, that's for sure. He has always been able to maximize production with his defenses. He's usually undermanned too. This past season, the Browns had a very solid defense, just ask the Patriots. And Ryan was able to do it with duct tape for the most part. The young DBs (Haden, Ward) were bright spots but other than that, look at their front 7. Rogers is a nice player and Rubin emerged, but other than those guys... they had zero playmakers. Especially at the LB position.
They were finally getting the right pieces to play the 3-4 and then they just flush it all down the toilet again. There is something to said about having continuity -
Laley23Jauron was with an expansion team and the Lions as the DC. Virtually impossible to succeed. Even as a Head Coach, he was with the Bills. I would be concerned about the Bears having a poor defense with him in charge, but again, even if you are a defensive minded HC, its the D-Coordinator who makes the calls.

The Steelers disagree.
