Pat Shurmur to Cleveland?

As for the rebuilding remarks, eh..

We've been rebuilding, but we're still only a good offseason away. Switching to a 4-3 isn't a big deal, as our defense as is, is probably better equipped for a 4-3 anyway. Rogers and Rubin could both line up at DT then and our LB's aren't blitzing LB's anyway.

We've seen before though that team with even worse records than the Browns, have hired completely new staffs and turned it around the next season, some even making the playoffs.

No one knows if he will work out or not, but all season we were hearing names like Gruden and Cowher. Then to get someone that no one had heard of, is just a little underwhelming. Can't say it's a bad hire, but can't say it's great either.

As for his performance in St. Louis, he was basically coaching the Browns offense. They had the same RB, no WR's and a rookie QB. Obviously Bradford has much much more talent than McCoy, but I guess like the aspect that he's used to working with little.

Regarding your comment that it is good news for McCoy. This is where I am hesitant to be thrilled. The Browns need a franchise QB, and I am not in the belief that McCoy will ever be anything better than average.

And the Browns are more than a year away. Even if they have a great draft this year, it will take a couple years for those guys to mature and be ready to compete with the likes of Baltimore and Pitt.

The ties for Shurmur go even further with Heckert since they were both in Philly for a while. Heckert certainly knows enough about him. I am interested to see who they can get for the coordinators.

No. You just can;t say this for sure.

Carolina went 1-15 to winning the division. Atlanta, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, KC, etc... All teams who went from worst to great records.

Just consider who posted it, a big dumb cleveland troll.

I think that was Miami...unless Carolina also did it, which I don't remember them doing so but I could be wrong.

San Diego went from 4-12 to 12-4 under Marty.

Not saying that you can't. First off, I think the AFC North is the toughest division in football, so that is one thing working against the Browns.

Secondly, those teams had that "franchise QB", which is what the Browns lack, IMO.

I'm not saying they can't improve tremendously over one year. I think a .500 record could be expected if the right moves are made, but to get to the top of the conference, I just think they need move talent and overall depth.

    From 1-15 to division champs

sometimes the no name guys work out

Mike Tomlin was a surprise hire, same as Cowher back in 1992, and Raheem Morris with the Bucs

Tomlin was a surprise to Steeler fans, but he was not a no name coach. He coached at Tampa Bay when they had the top defenses in the league and then in his first year as a DC had the Vikings at 8th overall D and the top run defense.

I mean, you can't really compare Tomlin to a guy like Shurmer who was a longtime assistant and then ran a very mediocre offense as a coordinator.

I believe they were the team they went from 1-15 to division champs. However, if you are referring to Carolina, lol at Jake Delbum.

I know what they did, but in my reply, I was referencing the teams mentioned. And Miami is probably the exception to the rule. In most turnarounds of that magnitude, you have a franchise QB.

Back on topic, I don't think the Browns can win the division next year, but they could definitely have a winning record overall and possibly split games with the Ravens or Steelers.

Jake Delhomme was absolutely a "franchise QB". He started for 6 seasons in Carolina and only really had one bad year.

Jake used to be a franchise QB. You cant say bc he sucks now he sucked then. It doesnt work like that. Dynasty is right.

This from Adam Schefter's ESPN.com chat

    Quote:

    Russ (Ft Lauderdale, FL)

What did you think of the Fox hire for Denver? Does he keep McCoy as OC, or reach out to Fassel, seems like that combo (in reverse) worked well with the Giants...

    Adam Schefter

Russ: He'd like to keep McCoy, but everything I hear is that McCoy could be Cleveland bound. If he leaves, then Denver will have a critical hire to make on the offensive side of the football. Fassel would make sense, but Denver never called him during its head coaching search, so I'm not sure if it would start now.

    Jamie (Pelham,TN)

Now that Cleveland has it coach in Pat Shurmur. Are you getting any information about who the frontrunners are for Offensive Coordinator and Defensive Coordinator positions?

    Adam Schefter

Watch Mike McCoy for offensive coordinator, Jamie, and defensive coordinator is something the team is sifting through now. Maybe Dick Jauron, maybe Dave Wannstedt, maybe someone else. Browns still deciding.

In all fairness Delhomme had 1 great season, a bunch of mediocre seasons and 1 bad season in Carolina.

But he was their franchise QB. Not saying he's great by any means. Guys like Eli Manning, Matt Cassel, Joe Flacco, Mark Sanchez etc.. wouldn't be considered elite QB's, but they are franchise QB's by all definitions.

What exactly is he right about? We gave FACTS that teams have turned it around.

Atlanta did it with Matt Ryan, nobody knew about him... Baltimore did it with Flacco, nobody knew about him...

    Etc...

Colt McCoy had a 66.6% completion rate as a rookie. That's pretty damn good. To say Colt won't be good is an opinion, because nobody knows yet. To me, I think he is. He seems to have "it".
  • zach24oz
So from what I have been reading, Dick Jauron as the next DC and Mike McCoy as a candidate for the OC, but John Fox is trying to talk him into staying at Denver. Shurmur already said he will call the plays, so it will be interesting to see who comes in as an OC or I guess assistant OC. It is safe to say that they will switch over to a 4-3 defense now...Since Rob Ryan is pretty much a Cowboy now.

What is the definition of a "franchise QB"?

And Delhomme was signed as a free agent before Carolina's impressive 2003 season. Prior to that, he had thrown 3 career TDs and 5 INTs. Hardly "franchise QB" status.
