QB Controversy going into the Browns bye week?

  • OQB
With two weeks to prepare for the Patriots....and time for Wallace and Delhomme to heal their injured ankles, I see a controversy in the making.

Who would you start against the Patriots?
  • wildcats20
    Colt McCoy.
  • Laley23
I WOULD start Colt McCoy. I think we see Del Homey though.
  • OQB
I would start McCoy as well, has done nothing to lose the job! Delhomme has thrown games away, and Wallace just is a backup QB who is too afraid to take a shot down field...

    McCoy.

IMO, it's a no brainer. We're not making the playoffs so this is the BEST chance for McCoy to get experience.

Reghi said he wouldn't be shocked to see Delhomme though.
  • From the Hills
Look for Holmgren to have a lot of say in this decision. I think and hope he would want them to continue to play McCoy. I really hope it isn't left totally up to Mangini, because I'm almost positive he would go with Delhomme.

    Anyone but delhome, please!
  • Rotinaj
Wallace gives us the best chance to win IMO. But like previously said, we arent making the playoffs so lets see what Colt can do.
  • From the Hills
On the "Point After" last night Grossi said McCoy is the "smartest" qb the Browns have had since Kosar. Little early to be making statements like that, but he could be right. I'm sure we all agree DA is not in that conversation.

Delhomme should be the 3rd option. Colt should definitely start. If he can get through Pitt, NO, and NE without major disasters, the kid may have what it takes to be a good NFL QB. Just wish he had some weapons on offense to see what he can really do.

Very interesting question and decision that must be made for the Browns. I certainly hope it's not Delhomme. At first thought I want to say McCoy because he hasn't played bad in his two starts. But I think that the Browns had a plan laid out for him, which was to sit a year and learn the offense and that's something that they might want to resort back to. It's one thing to be able to handle 2 starts, but to be named the starter for the remainder of the season might be more than McCoy can handle.

Agreed. See what the kid can do

But what if he's not ready? I know from his last two games, the game doesn't look too big for him. And although I thought he played well against Pitt, he didn't really do much against the Saints. I'm not saying McCoy is the wrong decision, but I would understand them putting him back on the bench.

    What IF?

Seriously? You're playing the what "IF" game?

What "IF" Sam Bradford isn't ready???

What "IF" Joe Flacco or Matt Ryan weren't ready?

This is the perfect opportunity to see what he has. It's also the perfect opportunity for him to MAKE mistakes to learn from.

he will likely go back to the bench...having proven he can play at this level he will get a chance to sit and keep learning and try to win the job for good next year...i would look for them to drop delhomme after the season and draft another qb for depth or for the future. I think he is def the best qb they have right now, but i have to admit i didnt see much of the games that wallace played in...

I agree with you. All I'm saying is that I would understand if they sit him back down. Personally I'd rather watch McCoy play than Wallace or Delhomme, but the coaches might not be thinking that way.

Brady Quinn looked pretty decent after his first couple starts. The NFL is a league where a QB can play pretty well, then the NFL D-Coordinators will exploit their weaknesses, and they will look bad--Like Brady Quinn.

I'm not saying this is going to happen to McCoy, but this seems like a perfect place to put him back on the bench and have Seneca get back out there.

I would much rather see if he has what it takes this year, before the draft. If he plays well and shows he can handle it, we can go after some WR's in the draft. If we don't know what he is capable of, it makes the draft process that much tougher.

exactly...the more tape they get on you the more ways they find to stop you...ie tommy maddux...plus why get him hurt when your not making the playoffs anyway

Ah..I remember the Browns fans saying how horrible McCoy was during the preseason. I would start Wallace, colt 2nd, then Delhomme

Which tells you how meaningless preseason games are, and how fans perceptions of players based on preseason play is astronomically skewed by their "real" play.
  • I drain 3's
Anyone but Delhomme. The offense seems at its best when Wallace is under center, but Colt hasn't performed all that bad either. Either one would be fine with me.
  • grodt
Mangini said the earliest either Delhomme or Wallace would practice was next Wednesday. Of the two I think Wallace would have a better chance to start because I don't think that his injury was as severe as Delhomme's. Personally I'd start McCoy and see what he can do and get Wallace back to 100%. Then if Colt struggles but Seneca back in there, if not then let's see what the kid is made of.

Agree, and that's especially true for rookies that aren't coming in as "the man". A 3rd round QB gets zero reps with the 1's in preseason practice, and then gets thrown into preseason game with the #1 offense and has no familiarity with the guys he's playing with.
