Rumored Nets/Nuggets offer for Anthony

  Lots of talk around Carmelo these days. Who comes out on top in this rumored offer?

  Denver gets: Derrick Favors, a future 1st round pick, and expiring contracts of Kris Humphries and Troy Murphy

  Nets easily come out on top. Melo is a top 5 player in the league.

  Denver. Carmelo was going to leave either way, now Denver gets 2 first rounders and expiring contracts to rebuild their team. How many wins will the nets have with Carmelo? I say somewhere in the 30s.

  The trade easily favors the Nets (obviously). But I respect that the Nuggets are taking the initiative here. This GM has a serious set of stones. However, look at it from their perspective, he isn't re-signing and when he walks you don't get anything but a ticked off, butt-hurt fanbase (look at Cleveland). By trading him before he leaves they can get cap space, a promising lottery draft pick (Favors) and a future 1st rounder. This would put them in a much better position than Cleveland who is in no-mans land. You know the Nuggets are going to lose a ton of games if they trade Anthony, so on top of what they get from the Nets they can also have their own lottery guy and ideally rebuild in a year or two

  I forget who on ATH today said Melo wasn't a franchise player...think it was Bill Plasche.

  Carmelo is the most underrated player in the NBA. Guy is an elite player, but doesn't get talked about normally when you discuss the top players in the league. The Nets obviously are the winner in this deal, as top 5 players in the NBA are not something that are easy to come by.
  
  With that said, Denver absolutely takes this deal. They get Favors who has a ton of promise and some cap space to rebuild.

  In no way, shape or form is this anywhere comparable to the Cleveland situation.
  
  The Nets come out on top...for the time being. Favors is unproven, and you never know if the future 1st rounder will work out.

  Nuggets. I don't buy Melo as being a top 5 player in the league, and especially if Melo doesn't resign, the Nuggets are going to get good picks + Favors. Melo will be a knick, bank it.

  Yea, any team would be stupid to trade for Mello without it being a sign and trade, with Melo signing the extension.

  You win with stars so it's a start for New Jersey to get into the serious playoff discussions with a few more moves. Obvisously Denver is going to lose Melo anyway so you need to get picks and cap space to build.

  He's the only player I've seen that can somewhat neutralize Lebron when they play (obviously a couple exceptions to this).

  Sure it is. You have a free agent to be who could potentially leave Denver (or Cleveland) and his former team could possibly be left holding the bag. There is no way Cleveland was going to trade Lebron. Denver didn't want to trade Anthony either, but they probably see what is happening in Cleveland and would much rather control their own destiny.

  It's slightly comparable but not really. The only comparison is that both teams could lose their superstars.
  
  In Denver, it's pretty apparent that Melo is on his way out, and it's public as well.
  
  In Cleveland, everyone thought (or assumed) Lebron would eventually stay, and even if people didn't, it was kept very private.

  If Carmelo is going to leave regardless, then the Nets get the better end of the deal. Favors + a furture 1st is pretty sick compensation for Melo.

  No doubt that is pretty good compensation, but who knows how good Favors is, and that 1st round pick is probably going to be a late 1st rounder. The expiring contracts are definitely the kicker

  The Lebron comparisons are not way off, but they are far off enough that they need to be kept in perspective. First off, Lebron is the #1 player in the NBA, not an arguably top 5 talent. Secondly, Lebron was playing for his hometown team, where there are stronger emotional ties both from Lebron and ownership. With that said, there is absolutely no way Cleveland could have traded Lebron due to fan support and being a serious championship contender for at least the one year left on his deal.
  
  Carmelo is gone, there is not that emotional attachment and Denver isn't winning the championship if they keep him for another year.

  I'd think the Nugs would get a mid-1st rounder from the Nets if it's next season. Even with Melo, it's not like NJ will be better than Miami, Boston, Orlando, probably Atlanta in the East, or better than LA, Dallas, Utah, maybe even OKC in the West.
