Reds Vs. Diamondbacks: Game 4

Time for a Reds rally ......

How many 1st pitch outs have we made this game? ....
  • osu45804
With such a big lead in the standings losing one game right now don't hurt to much, but it's just frustrating the way we made a 5-14 pitcher look like Cy Young out there

I think I would have fallen asleep if I was in the stands for that doozy. 3-1 DBacks come away with the split.
On to Houston who are playing well, we shall see.

The season is over. There's always next year.

Is that you Larry from Erlanger?

I don't think I could be anymore unimpressed with Juan Francisco. He's the easiest out in the galaxy as long as you don't grove a 90 mph fastball down Broadway.

He has 58 career at-bats in the majors.

But in those 58 at-bats he does have a .345 average. He also hit at every level in the minors (.281 avg).

Yeah I know his stats, he has hit well and is only 23. But every time I watch him, I'm just not impressed. I try to be, but I'm not. His approach at the plate sucks. He swings at some terrible pitches. He gets fooled, a lot, because MLB pitchers aren't retarded and won't give him a fastball for a strike. I can't recall one time where I've seen him collect a hit on an off speed pitch. And I hear his defense was very sketchy down in the minors, but I can't comment too much on that because he hasn't had a lot of fielding chances thus far with Cincy.

I mean, I get it. A young guy with tons of power is anxious to be playing MLB and is pressing to show he belongs. But at some point, you have to show that you can constantly deliver professional at-bats.

Right. But he should be given more than 58 at-bats to show that.

Fair enough. But some guys don't even get to 58 at bats before losing their chance.

Yeah, but not 23 year old guys who've shown they can hit in the minors.

Obviously. My point is that no organization has a certain number of at bats that serve as a criteria for whether a guy can hit or not. You make the point that 58 at bats is a small sample size, which it is, but unfortunately for many players, 50 AB's is all it takes to get a bus ticket back to AAA. Juan's age is his saving grace right now along with the fact that he can hit from the left side of the plate.

In my mind, he has to develop a much smarter approach at the plate if he is going to be successful in the future. There's no way he's going to hit a lot of major league pitches with the way he totally pulls off on the ball.
