I vouch that this thread title should be changed to "Wrongwagon/bandwagon training camp and preseason 2010" so all the wrongwagon/bandwagoners can have their place to talk about the teams they root for which lie in other states.

You're not a true fan then.

Oh, you're going to hell too. Hopefully some "real" fans pray for us......

The "I can count to potato" pics also should count, as the "bandwagon" argument is retarded enough to almost make Capone/Modell seem witty by comparison.

What to watch for in tonight's preseason opener:

    QB playing time
...It's been reported that Ben Roethlisberger has had a good camp and considering he's suspended for at least the first four games of the regular season, it would seem to make more sense to let him sit this opening game out. Ed Bouchette said today he thinks Ben will start, however, and play one series.
...Byron Leftwich has a minor thumb injury and he hasn't had a sharp camp. He probably does need a lot more reps this preseason than most starting quarterbacks to gain some rapport with the starters and show he's capable of leading the team through the first four games. This is not a done deal. If Dennis Dixon goes out and has a strong preseason and Leftwich struggles, they may have to rethink things.

    Goal-line back/fullback battle
...Isaac Redman has had his second consecutive strong training camp. He has an opportunity to seize the short yardage role for this upcoming season.
...Meanwhile it's crunch time for Frank Summers or any other fullback candidates such as the recently acquired Dwayne Wright. If neither of those players emerge, the Steelers will likely not have a true fullback on the roster and tight end David Johnson will serve in that role.

    Draft Class debut
...Based on training camp it appears the Steelers might have a strong 2010 draft class but now comes some game action. Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders has been the best of the bunch, but wide receiver Antonio Brown, guard/center Maurkice Pouncey, linebacker Stevenson Sylvester and cornerback Crezdon Butler have also garnered some positive attention.

    Return game
...With the additions of Sanders and Brown, two athletic speedy receivers, the pressure is on Stefan Logan to show he's far and away the best option as a return specialist.

Other players to keep an eye on:

    - Ziggy Hood, DE
...Last year's first round pick has been dominant in training camp. Though he doesn't figure to replace Keisel, Smith or Hampton in the starting lineup, it might be difficult to keep him off the field if he continues his emergence in the preseason.

    - Doug Legursky, C/G
...A coaches' favorite. He's been tough and versatile every year and is still in the mix in the interior line.

    - Flozell Adams, T
...The 35-year-old may not see much playing time in the opener but throughout the preseason it will be important to see if he can hold up on the right side.

Steelers beat the Lions 23-7 in their preseason opener. Didn't get to see the whole game because I was at a wedding reception but from what I heard and saw....Isaac Redman ran hard and did well. At this point, he's got to be the short yardage guy. Dixon looked very good from what I saw.....both passing and scrambling. Ben didn't play at all.

Can't wait for the next preseason game.

Turned out to be a long night with the delay. I stayed for the whole game.

Also checked out the casino for the first time. Very nice set up.

As far as the game, the biggest concern has to be the offensive line.

Detroit's starting defensive line was getting in the backfield easily and blowing up the running game and also putting pressure on Leftwich.

They started Starks at LT, Kemoeatu at LG, Hartwig C, Essex at RG and Flozell at RT.

Down the road they may have to look at Pouncey as a starter at probably RG but maybe center. I also think Doug Legursky might be one of their best lineman overall.

Dixon brings a lot of energy to the field and the ability to run. He may still be the best option for those first four games because of the line play. They may need his scrambling ability. Or maybe play both quarterbacks. I never liked that but in this case I think they may want to have Dixon ready in case the offense needs a spark.

Dixon's performance last night is going to make it difficult on Tomlin to keep Leftwich at the #1 spot right now. Dixon not only looked good with his feet, his passing was accurate too. Also, Antonio Brown looks like the real deal at WR.
  • Pick6
I dont think anyone but Dixon should be considered to start while ben is suspended. Leftwitch has had a sub-par career. Dixon showed what he had last year against the Ravens.

Yeah Brown is going to be good.

He is very confident and somewhat cocky but most good receivers are.

He caught that short pass, made one move and turned it on pretty good in the secondary.

Dixon won't be able to read coverages and throw the ball into tight windows. Most of his completions will have to be short tosses or rollout plays where they give him an easy target. But with his ability to run that might be enough to get them through the first few games if the defense does its part.

Leftwich might be decent if he has time, but he won't with this line early in the season.

I will say that the Lions defensive line looks like it could be a strength. Corey Williams and Suh inside, along with Vanden Bosch and Avril, who seems like an emerging pass rusher.

They pretty much whipped the Steelers starting offensive line but it might actually be a good group in that 4-3 system that Schwartz had in Tennessee.

    Preseason Game #2

    Saturday night at 7 p.m.

    Pittsburgh Steelers at N.Y. Giants

The Steelers opened the 2010 preseason last Saturday with a 23-7 victory over the Detroit Lions. They'll get more of a look at their starters come Saturday night when the Steelers travel to East Rutherford, N.J. to face the Giants.

Ben Roethlisberger will see his first action of the preseason, although head coach Mike Tomlin has not indicated whether Roethlisberger will start.

The starters are expected to see approximately 24 snaps.

What to watch for in the second preseason game:

    QB controversy?
...Roethlisberger will get some reps but the bigger concern is who will be the starter during his four-game suspension. Byron Leftwich did not have much time in the pocket last Saturday and because of that the first team offense sputtered. Meanwhile, Dennis Dixon was able to move the ball effectively on the ground and through the air. He rushed six times for 31 yards and completed 6 of 7 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown. Leftwich remains the favorite to claim the starting nod but Dixon only helped his cause last week.

    Offensive line troubles
...The first team line struggled last week against Detroit and frankly it's a major problem with only a few weeks to go before the start of the regular season. The 35-year-old Flozell Adams has not adjusted well to the move to right tackle and could be in trouble. The Steelers will give Jonathan Scott more of a look at right tackle early in Saturday's game. First-round pick Maurkice Pouncey is also expected to work in with the first group, splitting time with Justin Hartwig at center.

Players to keep an eye on:

    Jason Worilds, LB
...The second-round pick out of Virginia Tech will make his preseason debut after missing last Saturday's game.

    Keenan Lewis, CB
...Lewis competed pretty well against Detroit receiver Calvin Johnson last Saturday. He broke up one pass in the end zone but did give up a short touchdown pass. Still, Lewis is on the verge of being a much bigger factor this season after injuries slowed his progress as a rookie.

    Antonio Brown, WR
    Emmanuel Sanders, WR
...Sanders made a big splash during training camp. Brown emerged as the most impressive player in last Saturday's preseason opener, catching three passes for 84 yards, including a 68-yard TD. One would expect the two promising receivers to get in the game earlier to see how they do against the regulars.

From what I've been hearings on Pitts radio....Dixon isn't even in the discussion to be the starter. Its Leftwich and its not even debatable. Arians made a few quotes along the lines of Dixon getting ripped apart because of his size. Based on what I've heard, I'll be surprised if he starts game one...regardless of how well he does these next few games.
  • Heretic
That's just stupid. I'm not saying they have to (or should) give Dixon the job...but with Leftwich's overall track record (including his horrible year with Tampa last season), there's NO WAY he should be handed the starting job. Dixon outplayed him in the first game while going against back-ups. Put him against starters and Leftwich against back-ups and see what happens before making some half-cocked decision to make a mediocre guy your starter for the first 4-6 games.
  • Automatik
    I agree 100%.

Although Dixon's stats were inflated due to two huge runs after the catch, I think he looked more positive. The line its looking shotty and Leftwich is a freakin' statue back there.
  • Non
    Yeah, true.

The 68-yard TD was a short pass, catch and run, mostly made by Antonio Brown.

Dixon is way too eager to pull it down. But then again with the line play, that might be the best kind of QB to have for the first four games. They may need those yards that he's able to pick up running if the line isn't blocking for the running game or giving the QB time to throw and get in a groove.

Antonio Brown is returning kicks tonight. Should be a player to watch. Also the punter will be doing the kickoffs.
  • LJ
Why is speulvda doing kickoffs? To provide a better deep safety on kickoffs? (6'3 230lb linebacker by trade)
