Is it safe to say that the MLB Home Run Derby has lost its luster?

  • BigAppleBuckeye
I have watched a grand total of zero minutes tonight, and there are zero (well one now) posts about it on here.

without a doubt. As soon as the top tier sluggers lost interest in participating...so did I.

There's actually been 2 threads about it, I believe.

It's just not that great anymore. You might as well let the dudes hit off a tee.

I've been watching, but this is easily the worst group I've ever seen participate. I didn't know who was until tonight, and if I was to guess the 8 players who would be in it I might have hit 2.

What the hell are Vernon Wells and Chris Young doing in a home run derby?

It's way too long for me to watch. 6 players, top 2 advance to finals, 1 hour and I'll watch it.
  • killdeer
the only reason I'm watching is to follow I 92's vbookie props.

and because Chris Berman is so so so funny....I just can't get enuff of his crazy nickname thing....it never gets old.

    oh wait, yes it does.

I'm actually watching and Bobby Valentine has got to be the worst excuse for an analyst I've ever heard. You must be bad if you're the worst and you're in the same group as Joe Morgan and Chris Berman.
  • killdeer
why you need three in the booth to call a slow moving exhibition like this is beyond me.

It jumped the shark after it was discovered the players were taking steroids (honestly). Remember how great it was back in the late 90's to watch McGwire and Sosa knock the cover off the ball? Remember how you waited in anticipation to watch Big Mac hit it out of the stadium, across the street and down into the next zip code?

We've had so many damn interviews as well. We missed several outs and homeruns because they had to have the camera on "Big Papi".

    Makes you miss the steroids

the only recent interest I can recall is the year (two years ago?) when Josh Hamilton put on that monster display after he got back to the show.

They need one host, (Buck Martinez or Jon Miller or Karl Ravech), a much shorter format, and interview each hitter after his turn...a la the old "Home Run Derby" of the 60's/

or better yet, make it a Pro Am, with teams of pro's and celebrities, and you add their scores.

This. Why does there even need to be different rounds? The fact that Josh Hamilton didn't win 2 years ago is just ludicrous.

You also shouldn't have to be in the game to be in the derby. Dunn would make it worth watching.

It's like a dunk contest....with lots of white guys.

    This.

The pitcher should be allowed to throw one high hard one per plate appearance. Guy hits three in a row here comes the chin music. Get a sponsor like Aspen Dental. I would tune in for that.

Love the HR derby regardless of who is in it. I don't care how marketable or how popular the players are
  • dave
this should be a good final

^^^I like that...something like Kruk vs. Randy Johnson from the game a few years ago when Kruk was dancin' around in the box and turned his helmet around.

    Now that was funny.

Fuck Cory Hart. Took Miguel Cabrera to top him in round 1 for my ESPN streak for the cash, figuring Hart would pull a Brandon Inge like round and hit 2 homers tops.

He decides to crank 13, and then the real him shows up once I've been properly screwed and he get shut out in round 2. Douche.

I think a few of the camera men were monkeys earlier. The camera was everywhere but on the ball
  • trackandccrunner
At least the final should be a good one. Papi vs Hanley. But I agree this thing has lost its luster. Still its something to watch cause its not like there is anything better on.

I hate David Ortiz almost as much as I hate Joe Morgan's comments about David Ortiz' shoes.
