2010 FIFA World Cup Final: Netherlands vs Spain

When contact is made and you know its a foul you sell it so the ref can't/won't miss it. Flopping is a agonizing dive with much rolling around in pain.

Diving = not touched at all/no foul

Flopping = actually touched/possibly/likely a foul but just trying to sell it for the ref.

I'm okay with flopping. Not okay with diving. Didn't see many, if any, true dives today.

It's ALL the same! Flopping, embleshing, diving.......what ever you want to call, there's no difference it's all simulation.

You cant possibly believe that. You honestly think a dive without being touched is the same as an actual foul. Good lord, Ive heard it all now.

We've been over this before but just to clarify, the game lasted 116 minutes, the score in extra time was 1-0, and I realize why I get bored. It's too long, there isn't enough scoring and I also realize that 700,000,000 people around the world watched it, but I wasn't one of them. I watched parts of three different baseball games, mowed the grass, watered some flowers, visited for a while with our daughter in law, and pet my cat. I say that if soccer is your cup of tea, then watch it. Enjoy every non-scoring moment, but for me, I guess my attention span is just too short for soccer. To me, something has to get my attention and soccer isn't something that does. I'm happy for Spain because they now have a World Cup Title, and the US still doesn't. I realize this will sound a little bit "Dan Gilbertish" but I will promise everyone that Spain will win at least one more World Cup before America claims their first one, which also reduces my interest because I like watching our folks play.

I respect all of that. But your promise is definitely a risky bet.

^^^Thats fine, youre one of the people who needs scoring. I can find enjoyment in a sport without scoring all the time. I mean, we can argue till we are blue in the face about how basketball is just as boring because you know each team is going to score and the game will be close at the end. If it isnt close, well than it was a blowout and not fun to watch.

Soccer, for most big matches, doesnt have a blowout winner so the whole game is exciting. Ill never understand the "nothing happens" argument, because to me it can be said about any sport. Why watch if I can just watch the last five minutes to see what matters?? But thats ok.

You guys are a bunch of hypocrits! You bitch and complain about teams like Italy and Portugal yet, when the squad you're pulling for (Spain) does it, it's called embelishing. Actually, I've heard it all now!

Guys getting touched is a foul? Spain rolled around all over the place today even if someone breathed on them, give me a break!

Go back and re-read all my posts. I said Spain was the 3rd worst country in the world at diving. I have NEVER complained about an embellishment being blown as a foul. I was just as pissed as everyone else at all the rolling around trying to get cards, but they were all fouls. Iniesta had a dive today. The Dutch, to their credit, didnt have any. Italy had DeRossi who had a dive and a questionable dive/clip (I tend to agree with you, I think he was clipped after that youtube you showed). Portugal is really bad, but mostly cause of Ronaldo who had like 4598563478 dives in 4 games.

All I am saying is I think there is a huge difference between an all out dive and a "flop". Spain couldve played through a few of their fouls today which did piss me off, but again, soooo much better than a real dive.

Fair enough but some of those fouls were ticky tacky, the Spanish players were barely touched but they reacted like they were shot with a gun.........that's the type of stuff I'm talking about. It's been widely discussed on this forum and especially when Italy is concerned, Spain did the same thing today yet in the eyes of some it's embelishment, frankly it's simulation even if they were slighty touched.

BTW Rock, I just went and was watching the Iniesta goal on Youtube. I noticed it was a lot closer on the "initial" play you were talking about. I decided to stop in just as the ball was played and he was actually even. So he wasnt offside on either pass.

I watched today's game. And it was the third soccer game I have watched in my life so my take it completely from the stand point of an uneducated observer. With that said the referee on the field sure seemed to have it in for the Dutch.

More than the lack of scoring, because I appreciate the strategy, the subjective officiating makes me dislike what I saw today.

I thought it was a hard fought match and enjoyed seeing world class athletes compete on the world's largest stage. And one could argue officials in any sport determine the outcome of a game. I see it more obvious in this sport.

You can crucify me for my thoughts, and that is fine with me. But understand my point, that needs to be corrected or beginner fans of the sport such as myself will never get on board and routinely watch the sport.

I can see how someone could think that, and it mightve even seemed that way. BUT you have to remember that the referee gave the Dutch a HUGE favor by not sending De Jong off very early in the match. Playing 10 on 11 versus Spain wouldve been the end of the Dutch so in that regard, the biggest call of the game went their way. The rest Spain got away with a few things, but that was the biggest call of the game, and it went the Netherlands way.

I watched again too and I'll say that it's closer than it looked live but I still think he was offside.

yeah no one gives a shit that you cut your grass today...if you don't like soccer don't get on the thread it's a pretty simple concept even a wise teacher can figure out
  • I Wear Pants
I always find it hilarious that people bring up soccer as boring and "too long" and then say they watched baseball instead. Swamp Fox apparently likes baseball and he couldn't stand watching an entire game without flipping between 3 of them and mowing the grass.
  • Automatik
Why do people feel the need justify why they don't like it? lol....its pointless.

"Haiii guyz....I tried to watch the game....I really did. Sorry tho...it was soooo boringz...not enuff goalz for me! I decided to watch paint dry instead lololololol!!"

FYI.....no one is looking for your approval.

I just finished watching a replay of this game and I must say that Iniesta may be the biggest diver in this WC. He play acted and went to ground SIX times, as if someone shot him in the back. Four of them he wasn't even touched and two of them produced yellow cards to Dutch players. The other Spanish players aren't bad at simulation either.

I don't care for Spain either way, I respect their talent but for all the crap I heard about Italy and diving, it was nothing compared to what Iniesta and company did in the final.
  • SportsAndLady
An Italian greaseball criticizing others for flopping..classic
  • SportsAndLady
Although if there is anyone out there who knows about the art of diving, it's Italians...so maybe he is right.
