Where does Gilbert rank in terms of NBA owners in net worth? People act like he's the richest owner in sports.
He's rich enough to match any offer. No one is going to make an outlandish offer if they don't need to.
  • SQ_Crazies
    He's over a billion.

What does this mean? I'm always heard that he's a spender, so it's obviously true, but the NBA has a salary cap, does it just mean he doesn't mind going over and paying the luxury tax?

It's not like he's spent a lot of money on a high profile coach or GM (yet).

How many teams go over the salary cap each year?

I've heard Cuban spends his money on the facilities and team travel and things along that sort, is Gilbert known to do the same?
  • SQ_Crazies
Yes, he doesn't mind paying the luxury tax. He's always been vocal that he'll do whatever it takes. That's as long as LeBron is there--if you think about it, that makes sense. Pour out money, because your franchise value is HUGE with LeBron--much more than what he could possibly spend.

And yes, Gilbert spends money on the same things Cuban does. It's said that the Cavs have the best practice facility in the NBA and he dumped a TON of money into the Q when he bought the franchise.
  • devil1197
Yes, Gilbert totally revamped the Cavs practice facility.

    http://blog.cleveland.com/pdworld/2007/09/cleveland_cavaliers_open_new_p.html

50,000 sq foot for $25 million.

He doesn't care about the luxury tax like some owners do (hence why teams want to stay under the cap). He'll pay the extra money without a problem.

That's why he may not be the richest, but he doesn't care how much money out of his own pocket goes to the team unlike most owners.

    SQ covered it.

facilities, the luxury tax, (over)paying coaches, gilbert believes that winning = making money. so he spends to win.

Winning certainly does, but I think what he understands is that LBJ=making money. You do whatever you can to keep him happy and you HAVE to win to keep him there, but it's more about that than it is winning--regardless of what he says. He's a smart man, and any of us dumbasses are smart enough to see that if LeBron leaves the value of the Cleveland Cavaliers (an asset that Dan Gilbert has control of) goes to SHIT.
  • hoops23
Dan Gilbert is worth over a billion dollars, so he's pretty much set on whatever he wants to do with the Cavs.

He said during his press conference that spending money makes money and winning makes you the most.

With that said, Tom Thibodeau could be a sleeper for the job as well.

    true.

i used the commutative property and didn't show my work.

LBJ = winning = making money.

he's spending money to keep LBJ and therefore win, allowing him to then make money.
  • SQ_Crazies
Yeah, I get what you're saying and I agree--however, I think the winning is really not that big of a factor. It's a product of having a player and of course he wants his team to win but he makes more money off of LeBron's presence than he does from winning. Know what I mean? They could win 45 games next year and get knocked out in the 1st round--but if they have LeBron, they'll still make a boatload of money. They could win 45 and make the playoffs and if they do it without him, they're probably in the red.

How much input do these minority chinese owners have in decisions...I am curious about that.
  • hoops23
I think they have close to a 30% share in the Cavs, so it's probably big input, but obviously Dan Gilbert has the final say.
  • SQ_Crazies
Yeah, I think it's 30% too. This info should be available somewhere.

Windy says Gilbert would be willing to throw 20 million at Phil Jackson.

Gilbert knows he's got to keep LeBron here.

With a casino coming to downtown, Gilbert is going to be super loaded, he's already a billionaire and that is jsut going to add onto it.

He knows the more people come to games/downtown Cleveland, the more people visit the casino.

Win - Win for Mr. Gilbert.

He could just offer Barkley 20 mil a year to coach....he would just recoup the money from Sir Charles at the casino anyhow.:D

Hey Dan....buy the tribe you SOB.

Wait, wait, wait...did you really just say Windy says Gilbert would throw 20 million at Phil?!?!

Dan Gilbert may be willing to pay him 20 million if it means LeBron will stay. Would NOT be a bad investment.

    But they won't get him.

You're not very bright if you think someone is going to pay a coach 20 million dollars a year

Since I hit the number right on the head I HAD to bring that one back up.

True...I would rather have Marge Schott as the owner than the Dolans.

    Players reaction

Mo Williams - "Do I think he deserved it? No. My question is: Who's out there that's better? He's not a bad coach. To fire him, that's making a big statement. After him, you have to get a Hall of Fame coach."

Z - "Obviously, we didn't achieve what we set out to achieve, which is to win a championship. But if you're going to lay all the blame on coach Brown and think that's going to solve everything, you've got another thing coming."
  • SQ_Crazies
Well...I'd say they're going to try and get a HOF coach Mo, and you likely won't play for him.

And Z is totally right, but I don't think anyone thinks all the blame goes to the coach.

Looks like it's 15% from what I could find.

And, according to this article from May 3 of this year, this apparently STILL hasn't been approved by the NBA owners, so they own 0% perhaps?
I assume Gilbert still will listen to then and treat them as 15% owners while the NBA drags their feet on it, but who knows.
    http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2010/05/stern_talks_nba.html
Stern addressed other topics with the media before Game Two:

    • The sale of 15 percent in the Cavs to Chinese investors hasn't been approved, he said, and there were no plans for a league vote on it. He wasn't sure why and said he had to check with NBA lawyers for an update.
  • SQ_Crazies
Those are both from a year ago though, I'm pretty sure they took a bigger share this year...I could be wrong though. I didn't find anything on it other than that old stuff, but I didn't look very hard either.
  • Skyhook79
The Cavs are not a good fit for Phil. He needs a superstar player with a killer instinct to win and the Cavs do not have that kind of player on their roster, well maybe Delonte but its the wrong kind of Killer instinct.
  • hoops23
I'm pretty sure the Chinese Investors part ownership went through a while ago..

Also pretty sure they have about a 30% ownership stake in the team.

I think I got it from a Windy article a few weeks ago, I'll try to find it.
