How would you grade the Browns draft?

That's an opinion and that's fine. But yours is no more valid than ESPN's or mine or the next person's. So not sure what is so comical.BR1986FB wrote:

Exactly. It's fun to throw out opinions but, as has been mentioned. we won't know who went boom or bust for a good 2-3 years....killer_ewok wrote:

I think the Ravens were the only team to have a complete solid draft, I think where the ratings come in for the other 3 teams are the values.BR1986FB wrote:

Bengals- Dunlap
Browns- McCoy
Steelers- Dwyer
McCoy may have been the most decorated player taken at such a value in this draft.
Value Wise,IMO
1. McCoy by a lot
2a Dunlap
2b Dwyer -
jmogThose Browns fans who don't like the Ward pick, there is no way you have watched the kid play.
The kid would have been the 2nd S off the board if not for his injury issues. He is by far the hardest hitting safety in the draft which is EXACTLY what the Browns needed, a head hunter at S.
When you have Wright, Haden, S. Brown, etc at CB you can afford a S that can just head hunt and not have to be amazing in coverage (and actually Ward graded out better in coverage than Hall and Mays).
I give the overall draft a B+. They addressed every major need except OLB, and WR (was too late in my opinion) but you can't address as many needs as the Browns had in 1 draft.
Oh, and for the first time in years I can say that the Browns had a better draft than the Steelers (who usually draft amazing).
In the North I would rank the drafts...
Ravens
Browns
Bengals
Steelers -

sleeperOnly thing I remember about Ward was him getting his ass stiff armed easily against Pryor in the Rose Bowl.
-
killer_ewokWard was by far the hardest hitting safety in the draft??? I can't say for sure because I haven't seen much of Ward but I have a hard time believing that he is that much of a harder hitting Safety than Taylor Mays. The crowd at Radio City Music Hall was ooh'ing and aww'ing at the highlight film that they showed of Taylor Mays laying dudes the fuck out. Maybe he's Mays' equal or a little better when it comes to hitting. Not sure. But if he was that much better in that area....he woulda put a few college players in wheelchairs.
Now, in regards to coverage....I have no problem believing that he is better than Mays. He couldn't cover for shit. -

You haven't been to shit. With the way your punk ass posts, you aren't any more than 12 years old and weren't alive to see the first four. And if you WERE actually old enough to see the first four (late 70's, early 80's) then you need to GROW THE FUCK UP and get a life.Al Capone wrote:

Taylor Mays? lol.. He's a hard hitter, but the two hardest hitting safetys were 1) Eric Berry and 2) TJ Ward.killer_ewok wrote: Ward was by far the hardest hitting safety in the draft??? Taylor is 3rd on that list.
When a guy molds his game around Jack Tatum, you know he tries to kill you.. If not for his injuries, he's probably a 1st round pick.
Eric Berry went 4th, TJ Ward was labeled as "Eric Berry West"... -
hoops23As for Al Capone, this dude is a fucking loser.. Who continually comes into a teams thread just to try and stir up shit? How about you actually try to hold a discussion regarding the game of football instead of coming into Cleveland threads EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME.
-
killer_ewokI've seen plenty of Eric Berry....while watching games and highlight reels like the one they showed at the draft and while I think that Berry is by far the better all-around player and can lay some lumber......they showed 4 or 5 hits by Mays in his reel that were harder than all but maybe one of the hits they showed Berry making. The crowd at the draft was going nuts during Mays' reel when they showed his crushing hits.

BR1986FBMays can hit but he's very overrated. A lot of Browns fans were pissed we passed on him but that was due to knowing the "name", NOT the performance.

This was from Peter King's column today.I love these draft scenarios, in case you hadn't noticed. Here's another one: In Cleveland, midway through the third round, the Browns already had addressed cornerback, safety and running back; now they had two more priority positions to fill: defensive tackle and offensive tackle. They had picks 85 and 92. They had their two guys lined up from about the 70th pick on -- Kentucky defensive tackle Corey Peters and Arizona State tackle Shawn Lauvao. In the draft room, president Mike Holmgren, GM Tom Heckert and coach Eric Mangini, along with a few of the scouts, monitored the draft. Colt McCoy kept sliding.
"I had talked to Jon Gruden about Colt, and he really liked him,'' Holmgren told me. "But Tom said we've got our plan, we like this defensive lineman and the offensive lineman, and we should go ahead and pick them. I kept saying, 'What about the quarterback?' ''
At number 83, two spots before the Browns were going to pick, Atlanta GM Dimitroff picked Peters, the defensive tackle the Browns had in their sights at 85.
"Then,'' Holmgren said, laughing, "the fates were telling me something. We had to pick him. I said to Tom, 'Let's pull the trigger.' I tried to run this draft the way Ron Wolf used to in Green Bay. Everyone contributed. But I kind of pulled rank a little bit. I said, 'Let's do this.' ''
Very happy to hear this, as this is why Holmgren makes the big bucks. I don't like hearing about rigidity of Heckert/Mangini who weren't thinking bigger picture like Holmgren as I am sure none of them planned on McCoy being there at 85, so I am sure it was not in any of their pre-planned boards.
However, you have to operate in a real time environment where you are prepared to take advantage of an opportunity like that that arises unexpectedly and it sounds like Heckert is very conservative I.E don't ever deviate from the script. There is something to be said for discipline, but when a situation like what happened with McCoy presents itself you have to be ready to act and thankfully Holmgren was. -
BR1986FBNoticed where Holmgren said "But I kind of pulled rank a little bit. I said, 'Let's do this?" Heckert is making these picks unless Holmgren interjects.
-

My point was I am happy Holmgren is overseeing things, because otherwise we would have another lineman right now instead of McCoy. He's hardly the next coming of Joe Montana, but he is a winner, fits what the Browns want to do on offense, and at pick 85 it would have been absurd to pass on him given the uncertainty at the position considering all we have 2 stop gap QB's. It makes me nervous that Heckert was unwilling to be flexible or responsive were it not for Holmgren big dogging him.BR1986FB wrote: Noticed where Holmgren said "But I kind of pulled rank a little bit. Actually, the post wasn't directed toward you. It was directed toward the "Holmgren is making the picks" people. Yes, Holmgren interjected there but Heckert is running the draft. Probably a good move with Holmgren sticking his nose in there (time will tell) but Heckert's track record in Philly speaks for itself.IggyPride00 wrote:

im right you douche bag. you say you been to 7 superbowls but thats impossible because your faggot ass sits behind a computer montior all day and jacks off to the steelers and talking shit to browns fans. so there is really no time for you to go to a superbowl.Al Capone wrote:

Yeah, I'm not at all debating that he's overrated or even saying that the Browns should have taken him. It's just hard to imagine there being harder hitters "by far" at the Safety position in this draft.BR1986FB wrote: Mays can hit but he's very overrated. Kinda like Rey Maualuga. I still hear shit about "we should have taken Maualuga. He's a nasty hitter." When in fact, two scrubs that we have who played less games/in limited duty, rookie Kaluka Maiava and Jason Trusnik had as good or better numbers than Rey.killer_ewok wrote:

Shook_12taylor mays = jamaurus russell. all the physical tools and no brain. he will not pan out in the nfl. not fluient enough in the hips to turn around and run with the wide out.
-
BR1986FBI'm sure he'll be decent in run support but burnt toast when he has to cover someone.
-
devil1197I stated from Day 1 that Mays was overrated.
Glad to see they agreed and he fell out of the 1st round.
A guy with his measurables usually doesn't fall, but he cannot cover.
