Where to stay in NYC

  We have to travel to Syracuse in June for a graduation, so I'm thinking we may as well drive 4 more hours and spend a few days in NYC. Neither of us have been, and I've no idea where to stay. What's the coolest area?

  NYC sucks. The city smells like trash(literally) and there are more poor people per square inch than anywhere in the world.

  What's your budget? Traveling with kids?
  
  Just a heads up, it won't be cheap.

  The first time is a lttle freaky but NY is simple to figure out the street patterns.
  Wife and i stay in the Rockefeller Center Area. this location provides walking distance to Centeral Park and some of the nice area around it, walking distance (good walk) to Time square, the Threater district, Modern Art Muesum (check out some off broadway plays) .. but when the wife a i where younger it didnt seem as far. I suggest a cab ride to Soho wonderful great art shops in that area. Take a cab to Little Italy for dinner and avoid Chinatown.
  Park the car and dont drive in NY .. drive in and drive out ...

  Just the hubs and I. I know it'll be spendy but for a few days that's ok.
  
  Sleeper, you sound like my husband. He has no desire to go, but I feel like it's something I need see at least once.

  I suggest the Upper West Side then, somewhere around the Museum of Natural History.
  
  A short walk to an awesome area of Central Park, good food, some shopping and easy to get anywhere downtown.

  Don't listen to sleeper, NYC is an awesome city. I recommend looking at Airbnb. There might be cheaper options in Manhattan than a hotel.

  NYC is awesome. I've never had a bad time there. Probably been upwards of 10 trips.
  
  You won't be able to see anywhere near everything that you want, so if you can provide a rough outline of what you guys like it would help.

  Marriott Marquis in Times Square is good, and central to a lot of places. Endless number of places to go.

  wife and I stayed twice at the Warwick New York... 65 West 54th street, New York City, NY 10019
  
  please note wife and I havent been to NY in 5 years but before that we when every year and stayed in the Rockefeller Area.

  Under no circumstances would I recommend staying in Times Square.
  
  
  Upper East Side is also solid if you're near Central Park / 5th Ave. It's nice to be able to get away from the clusterfuck that is Midtown, Times Square, etc.

  For sure we'd go to the 9/11 Memorial. Other than that, I don't really care. Just New York-y type things. No shopping, I can do that anywhere.

  Although I don't know much about the area other than it's dead at night, check the Financial District for hotels. You can get some really city views from down there.

  Be sure to get some bagels for your way back home. New York bagels are the GOAT.

  I used to always stay in the financial district I believe it was the Marriott there. Had an old flame who used to work for Marriott so when I lived in NJ we would stay there for the weekend. Awesome views. Nice hotel. Relatively cheap.

  It's become a bit touristy since the first time I went like 15 years ago, as a few food shows have hit it up. But I still contend the best slice of pizza in NYC is Bleecker Street Pizza. I go almost every time I'm in NYC.

  Stay in New Jersey (much much cheaper), ride the train into the city. You can get day passes, the subway is the fastest way around the city.

  While we are at it, I will be there next week with my brother and father for the NCAA tourney. Auto (and anyone else as familiar with NYC), what neighborhoods should I look into for dinner reservations? The tournament is at MSG, and the doors open for the night sessions at 7pm (wrestling starts at 8). I don't want to eat near MSG, because it will be mostly touristy bullshit, so I am trying to go to any neighborhood that isn't too far where it would be 40+ minutes to get back to MSG.

  Man trip? Steakhouse? Keens is very close to MSG.
  
  You can find anything you want in any of the villages. Unless it's rush hour, a cab shouldn't take that long, subway even faster.

  When I went, I stayed in the Financial District.
  
  The hotel was called the Andaz on Wall Street. It was easy navigating the subway system up to Times Square and Central Park. It felt safe, was basically deserted after the end of the business day, and was way cheaper. The hotel was awesome, clean, and very modern.
