What was nice about growing up in Canton in the late 60 and early 70’s was in the summer, players from every school and college in the area would come to the playground for pick games … never know who would show up.. win keep playing lose sit OUT and wait to play again or get pick for another team… -

Stricklin from Athens? I played pickup basketball with him when we were kids.Ironman92;1769306 wrote:I don mean you were on the bench when your team faced a future big leaguer, but someone you actually competed against.
Being from southeastern Ohio mine is probably the worst and no real big names at all.
In same foursome against Lancaster and Joe Ogilvie in golf in high school. He shot 35 to my 39 and 73 to my 79.....Joe played on the PGA tour for about 15 years. Won a small tournament and held the lead on a Saturday at the British Open.
Baseball faced Chris Ellis (played 3rd base at Ohio State) and Mike Estep (played SS at Ohio State)....I picked him off first. Faced Scott Striklin (played at Kent St then coached them for a long time then head coach at Georgia and now AD I believe at Ole Miss)...could not get him out and only catcher ever to throw me out stealing. Also a few other guys that played A-AAA ball.
Basketball and football against some small college guys.
Mine is weak....let's hear yours
I played basketball against Scott Chapman who was drafted by the Astros.
Threw shot put against Brooks Burris.
Played peewee basketball against Katie Smith. -
sportchamppsSoccer: I once scored against Troy Perkins who I think is still in MLS and had a few appearances as the National team goalie.
I also played indoor against Danny O Rourke. A teammate of mine elbowed him in the face and he literally walked off the field and quit. He later went on to win the equivalent of the Heismen for soccer and was known for being tough. Also played for the Crew.
Wrestling: My brother was a state champ. When I was 6-8 he coached me in local tournaments. I was a beast and pretty much won everything. Then we went to the biggest youth tournament in Ohio. I wrestled Dustin Schlatter in the semis and beat him but it was really close. Then in the championship I wrestled CP Schlatter and he dominated me. I mean he kicked my ass. It was so bad I quit wrestling until Jr High. -
Ironman92
Yep, he was their catcher. My soph year pitching there I threw a 5 hitter (lost) and he had 3 hits going 3/3....couldn't get him outsuperman;1769401 wrote:Stricklin from Athens? I played pickup basketball with him when we were kids.

Heretic
I watched Ginn in state running the hurdles. I tried to get a pic of him and he was so quick I couldn't even time it up. He was unreal -- it just looked like stride, stride, stride, where he'd clear hurdles effortlessly and it didn't even look like he was jumping.Commander of Awesome;1769341 wrote:Not me, but I watched my best friend in high school race against Ginn and Gonzales. Ginn was just incredible, he wasn't even trying and won by 3 hurdles. -

I did too a few times while at Ohio State, she had graduated way before me, but would come to the rec with the climbing walls in the winter sometimes.GoChiefs;1769342 wrote:Played a pick up game with women's basketball legend Katie Smith back in the day. -

Wildcat24In high school played with Jake Howell who went on to star at Ohio State.
Didn't play personally against him but watched a couple buddies get abused by Beanie Wells in high school. -
mucalum49Playing some of the bigger schools in NEO for baseball there were plenty of D1 guys but not many that translated into the pros. Most recognizable name was junior year facing Brian Hoyer when he still played baseball. I was way late on a fastball and dribbled a single just past the second baseman. That's about it though.

AppleKeith Byers in HS. His team lost.

Big_Mirg_ZHSDeShawn Wynn in High school. Actually tackled him a couple times. Once he tried to reverse field and I stayed home at my end. Blew him up. He cost me a FFB game once when he was hurt on his first carry for the Packers. Only needed like 1.5 points and he breaks his shoulder and ends his career.. In JR high played against Bobby Carpenter. Me and him were the two biggest people on the field. He was their QB and I was a DT(the difference in our athletic ability lol.) Once again stayed home on my end responsibility and annihilated him after a fake handoff on a jet sweep. I noticed when they had ran the play he would lackadaisically run a boot to my side after he handed it off. Waited for him to keep it and finally he did and I blew it up. He fumbled. It was great lol. That's about it.

I played at MVCD, so obviously a tiny as fuck HS. Was part of a holiday tournament that we got invited too because of our coaches. Amazingly didn't finish last, but Libbey destroyed us. They didn't even try. Nate and William could've beat us 2-5 Lololol.Crimson streak;1769369 wrote:Buford was an animal. He caught a pass in the lane and just took off and dunked over my teammate. GOONx19Fitzgerald Toussaint and Desmar Jackson in high school. I think Jackson played in South America for a year and then D-League last year. None of the other pros I've had the chance to play with were in organized games. Except Cousins I guess was in my rec league one summer.
-
HitsRusTwo ABs in high school against Dave Ford, pitched for the Baltimore Orioles.
-
hilliardfanI'm one of the older guys on this board but I pitched against Don Gullett (75-76 Big Red Machine) in high school. A year after pitching against him he was pitching in Riverfront Stadium. The most dominating high school pitcher I've ever seen and a pretty good pro also!

Fly4FunI swam against:
Bobby Carpenter - more famous for his football exploits
Austin Staab - Short Course Yards 100 Fly record holder, 4 time NCAA Champ, High School 100 Fly National Record
Nick Thoman - Short Course Yards 100 Back record holder and Olympic Silver Medalist in 100 meter Back and Gold Medalist for 4 x 100m Medley Relay
Seem to be a few "Ginn" stories... so here's another:
My friend Derek Hoye tried to match up with him in the 400 his Senior year, couldn't quite keep up with him. But Hoye was no slouch of an runner himself.
