And this goes back to my comment about the media. We live in an age where information is EVERYWHERE. When we didn't have Twitter, Facebook, extensive mainstream media (like we do today), you rarely saw this shit. Now they (media) sensationalize stuff like this and kids or wackos are thinking "hey, it would be cool to pull a Columbine." Not only does the media throw it in our face, they almost give these whack jobs "how to" guides on how to do it.ptown_trojans_1;1736096 wrote:I've just accepted this is reality. There is no solution as people are unwilling to do anything.
It is just another form of terrorism that we have to accept. Sad but true.
I thought the Economist had a damning outside view of our unwilling to do anything and just that we have accepted this mass killings as the norm.

I'm not saying "get rid of the media" but I don't see an ending to these things anytime soon. Hell, even when the military strikes ISIS, or some shit like that, the media is there to say "they tracked the terrorists down by monitoring their Facebook page and they knew their exact location." Gee, thanks for giving the bastards a "heads up" on what NOT to do next time, dumbasses.
There's an old saying...."even a fish doesn't get caught if it keeps it's mouth shut." (unless you're bowhunting them or snagging them, but you get the point) -

One is too many in my book. I don't have a solution to the problem and don't need to be told over and over again that racists are out there. It's a non-story by the media. Why can't this just be a terrible tragedy? Why does it have to be another national discussion calling for change when the reality is there isn't much we can do to stop it? The best thing we can do is punish those responsible and teach our children about respecting everyone equally. That's it. That doesn't drive media clicks but that really is the best we can do.
As a white person I see way, way too many people let racist statements and actions go unchecked among their "friends." Their is a responsibility for ALL people to help improve the problem. -

Yeah, I agree the spotlight is brighter now on it. And, the fact with the 24 hour news cycle any serious discussion is impossible.BR1986FB;1736106 wrote:And this goes back to my comment about the media. But, it is pretty sad that the norm is now accepting every few months some person will go in some place and shoot up several innocent bystanders for whatever reason. -

I think everyone on here, and everyone in the United States (outside of places in The South...just kidding..but seriously) feels absolutely horrible about what happened at that church and feels outraged by it.Heretic;1736078 wrote:So, the thing that's worthy of outrage is not that a person shot the fuck out of a church, killing a bunch of people...but that other people are outraged about it?
Good to know.
But I can also be annoyed that when I get on Facebook, this is a "white vs black" thing. We all know this was an isolated incident of a crazy racist person. Why do I have to read things like "Jon Stewart is the only white man who gets it" and then a bunch of people agreeing and saying "now yall white people know why we riot in the streets in Baltimore"?
It's the same idiots after 9/11 who hated on every Muslim person because a few extremist Muslims killed Americans. It's a logical fallacy that only makes them look stupid. -

Jon Stewart compared the reaction of 9 people murdered to the reaction of 9/11; as if the events were similar. What a clown.SportsAndLady;1736138 wrote:I think everyone on here, and everyone in the United States (outside of places in The South...just kidding..but seriously) feels absolutely horrible about what happened at that church and feels outraged by it.

I do agree with this. First, I'd call it more of a case of domestic terrorism using race as a motive. Secondly, I think people/the media have gotten so caught up with perpetrating a race thing every single time there's been a case of a white cop-type doing anything potentially excessive to a minority, so that when something that is legitimately worthy of honest outrage comes out, it's kind of the case of "boy who cried wolf".SportsAndLady;1736138 wrote:I think everyone on here, and everyone in the United States (outside of places in The South...just kidding..but seriously) feels absolutely horrible about what happened at that church and feels outraged by it.

It's why people need to know that for outrage to be effective, it should be saved for when it's truly applicable to the scenario (ie: without a bunch of "could have; would have" stuff attached). Otherwise it gets diluted. -

The media gives the nut jobs a forum and glorifies it as well. If and when they bury this stuff on page 2, then you'll see it stop. The anti gun crowd is blaming the 2 nd amendment when it is really the responsibility/ blame of the first. That's not to say you get rid of either, but simply realize this is " climate change"... Not in the environment, but in the way we deliver the news. It starts with responsible journalism in not to glorify or sensationalize these events. Racism was slowly healing in this country until the media started picking at the scabs urged by the agenda of those who get power and money by fomenting it. Suddenly the true racist are no longer marginalized but given a forum. The media can be a good outlet for news but in the same breath, educate these idiots. -
iclfan2FYI, in SC, churches are a gun free zone, so the whole "ban guns" argument isn't going to hold water, since laws don't stop people from committing crimes. You only hurt law abiding citizens.
Also, as I mentioned before, look how Charleston handled this and the cop killing a moth ago. This goes back to the cultural differences between the south and north black communities. They actually try to assimilate down here and not continue to be separate, even though the history has treated them shitty. I love down here, and am proud that the community has not acted like a piece of shit like Baltimore or somewhere like Chicago or NY would have.

gutcool story about the woman who spotted him, followed him and called police. Well, other than being your typical southern bible thumper.
She said the cops were there in minutes...I don't know how many tips they were getting or if something about her description convinced them, but that's an impressive response time. -

The whole debate is dumb. There is an estimated 300M guns in the US. Most of those, with proper care, will continue to fire for over 100 years. So even if you confiscated guns of registered owners, you're still left with millions of guns on the streets for criminals.iclfan2;1736273 wrote:FYI, in SC, churches are a gun free zone, so the whole "ban guns" argument isn't going to hold water, since laws don't stop people from committing crimes. The left gets guns, the right gets abortion...not much is ever going to happen on either side other than a bunch of bloviating and shaming. Absolutely pathetic how little attention, really, economic policy gets in the elections. -

After Sandy Hook, I was more favorable to some type of gun restrictions. But what can be done? People that want guns - regardless of their intent - will be able to get them, whether they're handguns or automatic rifles.gut;1736276 wrote:The whole debate is dumb. The only caveat I'd offer is this white loser isn't going down to the hood to get a gun. So to the extent that mass shooters tend to be white males, there could be an impact. But then they probably just improvise homemade bombs.friendfromlowry;1736290 wrote:After Sandy Hook, I was more favorable to some type of gun restrictions. But what can be done? I just don't think there's anything to be done. It's like banning alcohol to stop drunk driving - that's not going to work. The whole gun ban thing is just a dog whistle. -

I don't even think it'd be a black and white thing in terms of where illegal weapons would come from. I don't have to watch more than five minutes of the Dayton local news to see some white trash who left their kids home alone or in the car because they were all hopped up on heroin. But like you said, restricting alcohol or making street drugs illegal hasn't hardly worked. Why would it with guns?gut;1736293 wrote:The only caveat I'd offer is this white loser isn't going down to the hood to get a gun. Exactly. If someone is going to do harm, he/she is going to find a way to do it regardless. If this guy killed 3 people with a sword instead of shooting 9, would this event be any less tragic?friendfromlowry;1736290 wrote:After Sandy Hook, I was more favorable to some type of gun restrictions. Belly35The first thing that the WH mentions is gun control and socialist counties don't have this problem. Real..... Chicago not a country but it your gun agenda criminals carry, good citizen rights taken away..
Hey to that guy in the Whitehouse get a fucking clue.
The lack of support for mental illness is a shame in this country... If the Feds spend more funding on helping the mentally ill and socially inept behaviors individual than the spending on the hundreds of other worthless pork belly programs and agenda and the waste of federal spending ..Individual like this SC person would be helped and profiled (yes I said profiled)
Parents of children or families with an adult with behavior issue .. Need to man up and get those individuals help .. Problem there is no help for the cost and insurance.
Failure of the education system to handle, report, track and deal with the potential mentally illness and social behavior problem kids early Hey school system you know who they are help them .. School social counselor. Again no real place or program to use or to follow up with after those kids leave the system
The stigmatism of mental illness and those with social behavior issue is worse than racism .... But the politician does not address mental illness or the fact this fucking kid and so many like him slipped throw a bad system of government failed social programs.
Stop with the band issue of gun control you asshole liberal socialist and deal with the real issue...Redefining what can be done for the help, support and prevention of mental illness and social inept individuals.
Take on the real issue and problem and stop trying to misdirect the public to your failure agenda...
Mental illness is a social problem.... gun control is a political agenda... -
TiernanHow does SC exist in our century?...the dumbfucks lowered all US Flags to half mast but refuse to lower the confederate state flag. Repugnant.
