Income vs. Lifestyle
-
Me?This poll came out of the discussion on another thread, and I'm just curious as to what people think in general. Won't even state my case or go into depth, the question, very simply:
If you make 5 million dollars a year, could your lifestyle change if your pay doubled to 10 million dollars a year? -
thavoiceWhat do most think? Probably it wouldnt change.
BUt would it? Most probably. -
queencitybuckeyeWhich question do you want answered, the one in the poll, or the one in the text of your first post? They aren't remotely the same.
Better question than both would be to change "Could" to "Would" in the poll. Also, make it non-binary. "Completely", "A lot", "Some", or "Very little" would be far better than yes or no.
To answer as asked in the poll, could it? yes. Would it? Not really, as in a few years the opposite will happen. My income will go way down, but my lifestyle will improve dramatically (which is a hint as to why the whole notion is fatally flawed). -
TiernanAs you know I'm loaded already so I doubt another couple of mill would change much...maybe pick up the 42' Blackfin instead of my 38' Egg Harbor, little shit like that maybe.
-
MulvaYes, it could change by a few million dollars worth.
-
HereticTwice the income? I'd be up to TREE-FIDDY! FUCK YEAH MURRCA!!!!!
-
TedShecklerMine would change. I can barely live off $5,000,000/yr. right now.
-
HitsRusSince I only make a solid 6 figures, it would be hard to imagine what my lifestyle would look like at multiple 7 figures. But I have noticed that as I've moved up the income ladder...there is always the same amount in the checking account at the end of the month.
-
dlazzWould it change? Yes. How much would it change? Probably not a whole lot. I would be willing to say that a "lifestyle change vs income graph" would look pretty much like this:
X axis is money made, Y is "rate of luxury"...but since you can't really put a figure on "rate of luxury" I just wasted my time creating fake values in Excel and uploading a picture of the graph I made. -

I'd imagine it would change quite a bit.SQ;1552152 wrote:This poll came out of the discussion on another thread, and I'm just curious as to what people think in general. Won't even state my case or go into depth, the question, very simply:

All depends on how much you already have and the type of person you are. If (as S&L said in the previous thread) I was making a trillion a year, and it was increased to 3 trillion, I don't think my life style would change at all.SQ;1552152 wrote:This poll came out of the discussion on another thread, and I'm just curious as to what people think in general. 4.5 million to 10 million is a big lifestyle difference imo. It creates flexibility on your spending. At 4.5 million I don't buy that extra vacation house in europe, at 10m I do. Also now instead of paying for my grand childrens' tuition, I can probably extend that to other family members and even close friends. I guess it all depends on how extravagant you are as a person. If you are someone like Justin who doesn't give a fuck about city or social life and wants to live in the woods while homesteading, I don't think the extra 6 mil would make a difference. Maybe he can buy more unnecessary land or hire people to do his work??? -

Pretty much spot on. You go from 30k-60k you go from living check to check to finally able to buy a nice car and join a nice gym. You go from 5mil to 10mil you upgrade your NetJets package and renovate your vacation home.dlazz;1552235 wrote:Would it change? Yes. How much would it change? Probably not a whole lot. Ironman92Yeah....quite the difference. Like_that pretty much summed it up.
I'd like to give the $5,000,000 a go for a year or two. I don't think it would take too many years for me and my family to do whatever and to see pretty good luxury for a couple generations. -

That's not your lifestyle changing, its just the types of luxury changing. You already have vacation home, you already are saving for future generationslike_that;1552245 wrote:All depends on how much you already have and the type of person you are. Maybe not for a few years though....obviously you'd be saving up for everything that's responsible, but the extras of luxury may not be there yet.LJ;1552249 wrote:That's not your lifestyle changing, its just the types of luxury changing. Ok. Every person who made 4.5 mil for 1 year has every luxury purchased before that year ends, vacation house in Europe, and has set grand kids, relatives and friends up very well.LJ;1552260 wrote:At 4.5mil? Yes they would -

This is a question about a yearly salary of 4.5 mil, not a 1 time sum of 4.5 mil.Ironman92;1552291 wrote:Ok. Every person who made 4.5 mil for 1 year has every luxury purchased before that year ends, vacation house in Europe, and has set grand kids, relatives and friends up very well.
Not to mention the question came up when talking about someone who has already made millions for years. -

Absolutely. For starters, does retiring earlier not imply a significant lifestyle change?Me?;1552152 wrote: If you make 5 million dollars a year, could your lifestyle change if your pay doubled to 10 million dollars a year?
Otherwise, yeah, bigger and better location for a couple of my homes.
