Pretty HILARIOUS start to the show making fun of obamacare. You must have missed that part. And Carrie's legs.

Agreed that Luke Bryan seems kinda fruity, and FGL is poppy, but I disregarded that part in favor of the above.

I would consider myself a "country music" fan. I like going to the concerts and enjoy the songs for the most part. But, my parents didn't listen to it so I got into it later on. I don't understand how people who grew up on Hank Williams, etc. consider half of this stuff "country music". How can true, old school fans stand any of this stuff??? Most of it is pop music with steel guitars and country themes that can't get played on traditional pop radio IMHO.

A lot of it is like that, but there is still some really good stuff out there. I can handle about any of it outside of Luke Bryan and FGL. Not an Aldean fan either.

Music evolves. Is today's country different than 40 years ago? Of course it is. But you can say that about any style of music. I don't like a few artists, but overall, I enjoy country better than the crap that is called pop music now.

I agree with both your posts (se and boat) and an extent Fred that it is way better than any new age pop or rap bs (old school rap was great). My parents didn't listen to it either, so I got in, in the early 2000's. Not one person singing yet has been "country" in my definition. Hank, Garth, Cash, etc. However I do think there are some new artists who keep it "real" country if you will.. Justin Moore, Kip Moore, Thomas Rhett, Lee Brice (kinda), Casey Donahew band (texas), Church (altho he's rock, but sure not pop), and some others. I can listen to the poppy stuff by Aldean, bryan, and even FGL, but I don't consider it "country". And Taylor Swift is not even close to country. These award shows are also jokes. Look up Toby Keith's hate for these shows, and how they are just showcases for certain lables, and it makes a lot of sense. I'm sure I missed some other current "country" stars (strait, Jackson, and others), but I wish there were more true to the genre.

True country fans really need to look beyond mainstream/radio artists to find great country music. Look up a young lady named Erin Enderlin on Youtube, she's a great songwriter(wrote Monday Morning Church), but also has an amazing country music voice. There is so much unknown talent out there.

Did you really just put Garth in the same category as Cash and Hank? Don't get me wrong, I am a fan, but he's the one that made this pop-country sound popular.

If you listen beyond what they play on the radio, there are still plenty of true country music being made. I am a big fan of Aldean and Churc's country rock sound. A lot of these "outlaw" artists today, looking at you Moore, are just a product of their label. See: Shooter Jennings "Outlaw You".

I've been getting into a lot of Texas country lately, which isn't on the radio, but I don't think you can hate on Garth at all. He did not have a "pop" sound. I'd tend to agree he wasn't country in the normal sense, but his songs wouldn't fit in any other genre, imo. I wouldn't call Justin Moore "outlaw", but if you listen to other songs on the CD that don't become singles, I think a lot of gems lie in some of them. I listen to spotify at work, and I feel like half of some of these guys CD;s are better than their singles, but the radios don't want to play them cuz they won't appeal to the masses. Aldean doesn't write any music, so that gets knocked down in my mind. Colt Ford, Brantley Gilbert, Matt Stillwell, the LACS, Josh abbot band, and others all have solid sounds that no one talks about. I would love to hear recommendations of other "real country" music (newer) so that I can expand on what I listen to, because I get tired of the poppy stuff real quick.

I've always wondered why Chris Young is never on these shows. The guy has had 5 #1's on country charts, yet he's never around for any of these award shows. I'm guessing it all goes back to what Toby Keith talked about.

I don't blame some country stars for the pop sound. More money and more opportunity since the pop scene is truly so bad currently, I do not know when country was as popular as it is now. Back when I graduated HS in 2009 compared to now is totally different, no one was really walking around in camo, boots and dirty jeans but clean cut and preppy. Now a days everyone watches Duck Dynasty, listens to country and has camo that they always wear

I'm not saying Garth's sound was poppy. I mean, he's the first artist that really had success crossing over from country into pop. He paved the way for the Shania's and Faith's and IMO, that's what started country artists focusing on more of the pop country sound. As pointed out, they saw the success and money that could be made by creating a sound that both genres would listen to.
