Redskins Name Change

Me?And while you're at it, explain what is offensive about people CELEBRATING AND ROOTING for the Redskins.

Anybody can lobby and be vocal. That doesn't mean anyone has to change anything.BoatShoes;1529823 wrote:LOL, IDGAF about the name change and I'm not advocating for one. What I can't understand is why some people get their jimmy's rustled when there are people who actually do want to lobby for it to be changed. You claim that 9/10 Native Americans are apathetic but there is a mobilized contingent that do and they're free to lobby for whatever changes they want.
If 9/10 Irish people weren't offended by a Rowdy looking Leprechaun and the name Fighting Irish but a vocal contingent of Irish people were, it would be the same. Groups of people however small are free to associate together lobby for whatever proposed changes they'd like. -

I didn't know I was mad...LJ;1529759 wrote:Funny.... That's not the issue we are discussing and has nothing to do with the issue we are discussing. We get it, you are a random white guy who is pissed about the Redskins name and want other white folks to feel the same. Comparing the use of a name and a mascot to slavery and the holocaust is just asinine.
Also, you tried to compare it to gay marriage. If people treated it like I did, ie not caring about it because it doesn't affect me, gay marriage would already be legalized and not an issue. Why? because people would leave shit alone that doesn't hurt them in their day to day lives.
Should everyone on here no discuss or make a case for/against the topics? I thought that was why a forum existed?
Slavery and the Holocaust had very similar caricatures or depictions of those affected. Those were offensive. Same goes for what is happening to Native Americans, and they say it is offensive but "white guys" don't want to change it. Interesting there...white guys create and continue with a caricature/depiction of something that has nothing to do with them. It's alright for white people to create these stereotypical images but when those that are stereotyped argue against it, it is wrong? This isn't really adding up. -
LJ
You're just babbling. Sure there were carictures and depictions, but slavery and the holocaust ARE NOTHING LIKE THOSE CARICTURES OR DEPICTIONS ALONE! Why is that so hard to understand? We are talking enslavement and people dying vs hurt feelz in 2013.OSH;1529873 wrote:I didn't know I was mad...

I said if the majority of tribes find it offensive, I personally think the Redskins should change it. I defer to the tribe's judgement on this. It's not my place to pass judgement of whether or not it is offense. I never said it is wrong for the native american's to claim they are offended by it. -

I'm sorry I don't share your same belief in the incompetency of Native Americans. I'm sorry that it rustles your jimmies so much that the NFL bothers to pay attention and provide a fair hearing to such a contemptuous minority with hurt feelz. Even if we accept your position, 10% of a particular group that is informed and passionate about a particular issue is perfectly capable of lobbying the general public.Me?;1529864 wrote:So, there was a study done 9 years ago, and 90% of them made their case. They don't care. So, explain yourself and the desire that anyone has for a name change. Of course, while at the same time, holding true to your belief that they can make their own case and the knowledge that 90% of them don't care...go ahead. -

????what is happening to native Americans that resembles holocaust or slavery? -
bases_loadedIts amazing how every issue in this country gets divided into two different sides with the same people on each side every time.
Am I the only one as a child that saw the name Redskin and pictured strong, brave, warriors. Positive connotations with the mascots that I guess its own people perceive as racist caricatures?
I live in Dover, OH though. Home of the Tornadoes...hopefully people in Oklahoma don't get offended the next time one of their towns are wiped out. -

As a kid all I can remember of the Redskins is that I never wanted to be them on Madden because they sucked.bases_loaded;1529927 wrote:Its amazing how every issue in this country gets divided into two different sides with the same people on each side every time.

OHHHHHHHHHHH ok...now I get it. That 90%, they just aren't as informed about their own heritage as you are and they just need to be re-educated so that they can understand why they're wrong in thinking they aren't being wronged. Great, that makes total sense, thanks for clearing it up. -

I have no dog in this fight. If I have any dog, it's with people such as yourself who get so riled up over the fact that these people don't like something and try to change it. I made no claim that I know anything about Native American mascots or why the may or may not offend Native Americans. We're talking about X Native Americans who care and are passionate about the issue and want to lobby on the matter and Y Native Americans who are apathetic. Maybe that clears it up.Me?;1529953 wrote:OHHHHHHHHHHH ok...now I get it. Although in Tecmo Super Bowl, the Redskins were an annoying team to be. The sort that utterly dominated the early going, but was tougher to win with in the big-time late-season games because Byner wasn't quite good enough to do well when the computer started getting tough and Rypien wasn't a good enough QB to consistently get to receivers because by that point, the defense would run all the way across the screen and deflect his slow-ass passes. -
Manhattan BuckeyeHeresy. All of this. Anyone that had the Oilers with Moon, Givens and Hill would beat anyone. This is the play: 2 receivers do an out, 2 receivers go deep. Unstoppable.

Al BundyThe league approved the nickname decades ago. If the league comes in and takes it away, that would make the league Indian givers. We certainly don't want the league to be Indian givers because that would be offensive. Therefore, the nickname should stay.

O-TrapI was always under the impression that the name was to honor Lone Star Dietz, who was apparently recognized by contemporaries as being a Native American (though there is historical doubt on the accuracy of this) athlete and the coach of the Boston football team.
If so, it's hardly unrealistic. See "Cleveland Browns" and "Cleveland Naps" (though, admittedly, these were actually people's names). -

Funny thing is, most of this kind of stuff is penned by non-Natives, and I'm willing to bet many of them have never spoken to a predominantly Native American citizen on the subject.OSH;1532485 wrote: -
Manhattan BuckeyeAgain, the term "Native" is probably more offensive than the Redskins name.
