Should Churches be Forced to Marry Gay Couples?

ernest_t_bassMaking a spinoff (surprise), so S&L's thread can go back to "people believing weird shit."

queencitybuckeyeIn a couple of generations, 99.9999% of the population will look back at gay marriage and think it silly that it was an iisue back in 2013.
That said, the answer to the question asked is simply "no". -

I think we're making progress with gay marriage, but I don't think a church (or any business for that matter), should be forced to do something that goes against their core values. Obama's done it already, so it wouldn't surprise me if churches were forced to do this.queencitybuckeye;1485742 wrote:In a couple of generations, 99.9999% of the population will look back at gay marriage and think it silly that it was an iisue back in 2013.

I agree, as usual, with QCB, and people should be allowed to have their beliefs. At the Church my parents attend they do not allow alcohol at weddings, they might allow a first dance for the couple - and perhaps a bit more in the fellowship hall. And they will never, never allow a gay marriage. That is their prerogative, and they shouldn't be interfered with by the State.queencitybuckeye;1485742 wrote:In a couple of generations, 99.9999% of the population will look back at gay marriage and think it silly that it was an iisue back in 2013.

I agree with the second part, and I imagine that the first one is correct too because of the declining moral values that comes with each new generation.queencitybuckeye;1485742 wrote:In a couple of generations, 99.9999% of the population will look back at gay marriage and think it silly that it was an iisue back in 2013.

You actually believe a marriage between a gay couple automatically is morally inferior to a bad marriage between a heterosexual couple?thavoice;1485776 wrote:I agree with the second part, and I imagine that the first one is correct too because of the declining moral values that comes with each new generation. -
ZWICK 4 PREZThey're not forced to marry any couple, why should gays get an automatic pass?
-
sherm03To answer the question posed, no...churches should not be forced to marry gay couples.
I almost wasn't allowed to get married in my church because I had been living with my girl before we got married. We had to get special permission from the bishop to be able to get married in the church because co-habitation prior to marriage is pretty frowned upon in the church that we used to go to.
At the same time, though, I feel that people who say that gay couples should be allowed to join in a civil union, but should not be allowed to call it a marriage, are pretty ridiculous and sound stupid. -

Homosexuality itself is morally wrong to the highest degree.queencitybuckeye;1485791 wrote:You actually believe a marriage between a gay couple automatically is morally inferior to a bad marriage between a heterosexual couple? -

Just like murder, eh? Whoa...thavoice;1485798 wrote:Homosexuality itself is morally wrong to the highest degree.
As to the topic, I'm more of the belief that churches should only be relevant as far as teaching the bible and their god's word and performing charitable activities that promote that sort of thing. Where marriage shouldn't be tied down by religion, the government or whatever. And no establishment should be forced to perform a marriage and two consenting adults who want to be married shouldn't have to rely on any one establishment to perform that service. -

To you. -
ernest_t_bassWhy the fuck can't a gay couple just go to the justice of the peace to make it official, then have a nice ceremony somewhere, if the church is unwilling to marry them? I hate church weddings anyway. My wife and I were married outside.

reclegend22Absolutely the answer is no.

Based on what is written biblically, then this is unquestionably true. And, having been brought up in an evangelical household -- though not a regular church attendee anymore -- I agree.thavoice;1485798 wrote:Homosexuality itself is morally wrong to the highest degree. -
reclegend22With that said, do I care about people who are gay. No. It's not my business nor my life. I wouldn't vote for it, but I really don't care either.

ernest_t_bassI think the tricky part with legalizing it, or whatever you want to call it, is people will just shack up with their "bro," and say they are married to accept benefits. I know that this same thing can happen with hetero marriages, but I think it would be more likely a scenario in same-sex relationships.

Actually, it isn't. Highest degree? On the same level as killing, etc.? It isn't.reclegend22;1485817 wrote:Based on what is written biblically, then this is unquestionably true. -

Wasn't there an Adam Sandler movie about this?ernest_t_bass;1485819 wrote:I think the tricky part with legalizing it, or whatever you want to call it, is people will just shack up with their "bro," and say they are married to accept benefits. Well that settles the discussion. Anything related to Adam Sandler in the last 10 years is res ispa loquitur awful.wildcats20;1485822 wrote:Yes
BTW, why is Tiger Woods the biggest jerk in sports for cheating on his wife, yet Jason Collins is a hero for cheating on his fiancee? -

Yeah, the highest degree part might not be right. I kind of overlooked that part of his post. The whole "all sin is the same" thing is something that is really hard to comprehend and I admit that I don't really read the bible enough to comment on it.queencitybuckeye;1485820 wrote:Actually, it isn't. I do not believe, however, that same sex marriage is morally justifiable according to the bible. Are there any religious people here who think that God is accepting of it? I'd be curious to know. I understand that my belief is just a product of how I was raised, though.
