Question for runners regarding pain

  • Fly4Fun
I was out running today and about 3/4 of the way through my run I suddenly got a sharp shooting pain on the outside of my left hip around where the bone and gluteus maximus meet.

I tried walking for a couple of minutes then starting up again but every step with my left leg the pain repeated and I've been feeling it during certain movements for the rest of the day.

Now I've never had pain in this area before, but I feel like it could somehow be a pinched nerve as the pain is similar. I was hoping maybe one of our resident runners could lend some insight into this situation.

    Thanks.

My cross country team made the regionals....but I don't run much. It's probably syphillis.

    You ran too much.

You should consult a doctor. Mainly because your vagina is on the outside of your left hip, that's the wrong spot for it.

Only known cure is amputation. Bummer...for you. Not us. We hate you. Hope this helps.

Guessing sciatic nerve issues. You changed something a while ago which is now causing the pain.

You get older, wake up on the wrong side of the bed...and then you pull/strain a muscle (which you might not even notice) that puts pressure on the nerve.

Take 2 weeks off and you'll be fine.

Fly4Fun, I hope your left hip feels better after the beating you took on here. Good luck to you!

I couldn't tell if this was serious or not, but no.

I googled this quickly and it seems like that could be the right area. If it is this would you just suggest doing some biking or alternative cardio to running over the next few weeks and it'd be fine? Should I just take a wait and see approach to see if it gets better over the next few days if it doesn't consult a doctor?

Ugh... getting older. I probably won't take two weeks off but cut out running for the time being.

Now this pain could be just about anything, there is alot of material in that area but my guess is that when you are talking about an area where there is a large bone and a joint you are dealing with a tendon or joint structure injury like cartilage.
I don't think it would b a tendon or injury to the cartilage as I have torn my right hip flexor and both my rotator cuffs before and the pain isn't that severe.

If it gives any more insight, there is no pain from direct pressure on the spot just from movements.

    Thanks again.

Sure. (edit) Where do you run? As in what surface.

Runners have weak hips. Google "sciatic nerve exercises" and try some different stretches/strengthening stuff.

    That's my guess.

    No pain, no gain.

Typically pavement such as bike paths. Not a lot of dirt running trails around.

Only reason I ask. imo- Don't think it's necessary to stop running all together, just monitor it. Try running on softer surfaces to take away some of the pounding and add some stretching/strengthening exercises.

I'm also a fan of running backwards as part of a warm up and/or cool down, which I believe helps strengthen the core and work other muscles which benefit runners.

I already do strengthening exercises as part of my workout routine. I personally don't do much weights, but body weight stuff such jumping, squats, lunges, wall sits, etc. I do static stretching after exercising, but before I'll do "active stretching" such as caterpillars, knee highs, butt kickers, cross overs, etc.

Did you try something basic like changing shoes?

Agreed. Try running for a week in a nice pair of wingtips or scuba fins. If the pain is worse at the end of the week, it probably wasn't the shoes.

Nah, I don't need new shoes yet, and I hadn't recently changed. I've only had my shoes for a few months and I'm no distance runner so I don't put hundreds of miles on them.

Okay, next time I'll try running in my fins I have for training in the pool... that sounds like awesome advice!

But ya, I don't think it's anything major.

As already stated the next day I had some pain. And yesterday I had none, so I went on an easy run, pain free for most of the way then on the way back I just suddenly felt it a little, next step it was up, 3rd step pain up again. I stopped running, no pain while walking. I walked for 2 minutes, then did a really easy barely faster than walking jog back the rest of the way wiht no pain. I tried going a bit faster and elongating my stride but I could feel it then so I just kept it easy.

No pain after the run or anything today. So I think this is just something that will go away as long as I don't push it.

Thanks for the help in this thread or PM's.
