I wouldn't be tipping 1k even on that hit lol
I probably would've tipped the original bet.

Couple weekends ago, we were at The Horseshoe down in Cincy. As we were getting ready to leave the roulette table a guy puts $1200 on "0", we all start laughing like "yeah right". S.O.B hits it! Then starts jumping up and down pointing at his friend YELLING, I told you M.F'er I told you it was gonna hit! It was pretty good stuff. Thats some balls.

Once was rolling dice in a craps game in Vegas. I was betting table minimum which was 3 bucks while I learned the game. The max was either 500 or 1000. As I started to roll a dude came down and put the max bet down on all the hard ways. I ended up hitting a hard 6,8, and 10. He ended up giving me $500 before he left the table. It was probably the longest roll I had like 27 throws or something like that.

He won $18k. $500 sounds like a reasonable enough tip. Although roulette dealer isn't as hard as Craps or Blackjack (probably don't make as much in tips generally, either). I'm not sure where I've heard "5%" from, but that would be $900. But for that much money 5% seems steep.

It's all going back to the House eventually, might as well make sure the dealer gets some of it first.

Saw a guy today put 200 on 33 4 spins in a row lost every time. Some folks got balls.

Balls sometimes make you have really stupid decisions.

I don't understand the tip here. Yeah....you win a large amount for basically doing nothing and he gets a little share for running the game.....but the 200 times you play and lose....what do you get? Do they lose money win they don't have winners? A couple guys a day get lucky and you've earned a couple weeks salary for working a game at a casino.....I get it, but yet I don't. It's a nice gesture but is it expected by the guy?

That's the Vegas culture. It's really quite the accomplishment. Dealers are actually paid pretty well (and with good benefits) - they are not min. wage or substandard wage tip workers. Depends on where they work and how many shifts they do, but it's not uncommon in good times for a dealer to make $80-$100k.

I tend to agree they probably should not be tipped just for spinning a ball. If they add to the fun, like a cool/outgoing dealer can do they probably deserve something.

And professional gamblers tip little, if at all. They're trying to make money off a slight edge, and tips would ruin their margin.

I'm fine with the $80-$100 a year....but if they get one of those tips a day they are going to have $250,000 in tips.....that seems silly.

They don't get one of those tips a day. They definitely rely on them, but the dealer making $80-$100k a year does that mainly off of volume. That's why when visitation dropped, and the people that did come were spending less, the Vegas housing market crashed. Lay-off dealers, cut hours, and then tips drop 60-70% and suddenly they're struggling to make $40-50k. (and that goes for waitresses, valets, etc..)

Plus, I don't think roulette is a very good dealer job - I always see them just standing there with no one playing. Poker, BJ, Craps and probably Baccarat are the dealer jobs that pay well. I'm guessing you have to get "promoted" into those jobs.

No idea what a dealer might get from whales, and no idea how or if they share those tips. I'm fine with $80-$100k, but relative to the skill/effort/value it's pretty high (which is why so many go there looking for jobs).

Thanks. It was crazy. I hit for $10k, then my girlfriend hit for $2250. Then, on a machine that a lady hit for $10k on moments after I did, I hit for $2000 at about 1am in the morning. We hit some misc. stuff that took it up to $17k'ish. My Jeep will be paid off in about 3 hours. lol

I don't gamble because I am a responsible human being and a Christian.

    Hope this helps.

Really? That's weird. I think Mountaineer wants all of the positive publicity they can get since the place has slowly turned into a ghost town with the oversaturation of casinos in Ohio... so they don't care. Congrats, again....hopefully some of it made it home with you. ;)

I have a pic of me betting when we first got in the casino, got in trouble for taking it. And yes i brought 6500 home. Not bad for a $1300 vacation.

    Reported.....to the IRS.

Hopefully the CPA's here will correct me if I'm wrong, but some brief tax highlights:
    1) Big slot winnings (over $1k?) usually create a paper trail reported to the IRS
    2) If you cash out big from a table game, over $10k (I'm not certain of this never having been in that situation) there is a paper trail, for AML if for no other reason
    3) If you deposit a big win in your bank account, you've created a paper trail
    4) If you try to use the cash to pay off a bunch of recurring expenses you normally pay by check or credit, you are creating an anomaly in your paper trail (i.e. what happened to the $3k in gas charges you have annually? what happened to the $100 you withdraw every week from the ATM?)

I'm trying to caution you against underreporting your winnings. That said, don't forget about your losses. It gets tricky because your little slot jackpot gets reported to the IRS, but your losses (which typically will sum to be greater than your winnings from one or two jackpots) don't.
    5) For non-pro gamblers, you can deduct losses up to your winnings. But you better be able to document losses. You can keep a ledger of winnings and losses if you gamble on occasion, but that's not worth much. Only thing I can think of are ATM receipts from inside the casinos and possibly player card histories (you can extrapolate expected losses based on frequency and amount played)

Man I'm so minor league.. I hit $950 in Atlantic City this weekend and thought I was on top of the world.
