A Movie Question for you Marketing Buffs (or Marty Irish)

  • ernest_t_bass
I know that google.com exists, but what are some good movies/documentaries that would be good examples of marketing and the marketing mix, that I could show in class? We've already watched "ESPN 30-for-30: The Birth of Big Air." This was directly applicable to many of the things we have discussed in class, as BMX and big air went from nothing, and now it is huge (X-games). What are some other movie/documentary examples (non-porno) that would show how the marketing of something lead to success (or even failure)?

    Dogtown and Z-Boys

Might sound strange, but watching, and analyzing, infomercials from known marketing successes can be helpful. Keep mindful of what they're doing int he video the whole time.

Glengary, Glenross. Epic marketing techniques in that movie.

Lol. Probably too much foul language for a HS class.

I'd imagine that there's probably been a documentary or some sort of video made about Starbucks that's sort of what you're looking for. They're really good at understanding trends and use the four Ps pretty damned effectively. I mean they're able to charge like $4 for a cup of coffee, people recognize their logo, the seem to have a handle on where to put locations (probably have a decent DSS for that like McDonald's), etc. They seem to understand the wants/needs of their customers as well since they've always been one of the first major chains to have things like WiFi in all their stores, they're moving to Square as a payment system/embracing new methods, etc.

Lol. No. There are ~90 school days in a semester. Having 4-5 (applicable) movie days is not a terrible thing.

How about The Social Network? Facebook and Social Media are a huge cog in the marketing mix in today's landscape.

One thing you will learn in the UFC video is how they originally had to pay to get the Ultimate Fighter reality show on TV to help build their product.

When I was in DECA we watched a few Zig documentries as well.

The Diamond Empire is very good. Basically shows how De Beers built an empire based on myth.
  • Trueblue23
    Cocaine Cowboys
  • O-Trap
Any movie about the ins and outs of grifting and/or conning might be helpful, honestly.
  • Rotinaj
    Clerks.

There is about a 30-60 second part of Waynes World that discusses product placement/marketing....
