Always been a huge fan of "Old Man" by Neil Young. The song was wrote about the caretaker of the ranch he bought in '70.
Young introduces the song as follows: [INDENT] About that time when I wrote (Heart of Gold), and I was touring, I had also -- just, you know, being a rich hippie for the first time -- I had purchased a ranch, and I still live there today. And there was a couple living on it that were the caretakers, an old gentleman named Louis Avila and his wife Clara. And there was this old blue Jeep there, and Louis took me for a ride in this blue Jeep. He gets me up there on the top side of the place, and there's this lake up there that fed all the pastures, and he says, "Well, tell me, how does a young man like yourself have enough money to buy a place like this?" And I said, "Well, just lucky, Louie, just real lucky." And he said, "Well, that's the darndest thing I ever heard." And I wrote this song for him.
Just have always thought it was really cool.

    Reps.

Wish You Were Here is at the top of my list as well, regardless of the "interpretation" you use while listening. Many will say/think that it is the groups longing for Roger "Syd" Barrett, as they had to ditch the deranged man behind. Many will also say/think that it is the band singing to their younger selves. A beautiful song.

    Other... Stairway to Heaven.

Imagine is a tough one to argue.

however, The Boxer resonates with almost every person during those years when you are first out on your own trying to make a living and being responsible for your own well being. That song can inspire you when the going gets tough.

Mumford & Sons does a great cover of The Boxer on their new album.

There are a handful of older songs, but I would have to think about it to make a list.

The only recent song that I thought was great was "If I Die Young" by The Band Perry.

American Pie and it isn't even close.

If we are talking all music instead of just songs then Beethoven's 5th Symphony.

    Sandstorm - Darude

    November Rain for me.

Has so much in it from the orchestration to epic guitar solos, the last 2 minutes of the outro is one of my favorite parts of any song ever.

Checking in at 9 minutes there is alot to chew on.

American Pie is maybe the most creative song ever but shouldn't the greatest song ever "inspire"?
  • gut
Well, the perfect country & western song is "You Never Even Called Me By My Name"

Eric Clapton - My Fathers Eyes

Pretty awesome song connecting grandfather, father/son (Clapton) and son in their parallels and similarities despite Clapton not knowing his father and his son, Connor, dying at such a young age.
