1 - well, why travel vertically when there is nothing there?Gblock;1337881 wrote:so i was reading about the voyager explorer getting ready to leave the solar system and i was wondering why do we only travel horizontally out of the solar system? is it possible to travel straight up or straight down for the same distance??
2- and probably more practical, the vast majority of propulsion requires using planets gravitational pull to slingshot through space. Space craft simply do not carry enough fuel to push themselves very far at all. So, nothing to slingshot off of by traveling vertically, nowhere to go -

Whenever I watch multiple shows on space/universe I'm up all night thinking "Where does it start and end?"Jughead;1338334 wrote:Complex three dimensional models always seem to mess with my mind.
I like to watch shows about astronomy. Recently, combinations of 2D and 3D models were used to describe the effect that the gravity of the sun has on planets' orbits. It baffled me to see the sun sitting in the middle of a 3D cone of depression while the planets were placed in 2D space, like in the photo below.
The planets are not all in a flat plane like this photo shows, but how would you go about creating a model of it? -
