You like to comment about how I "love Graham wrestling" all the time. Granted I never was coached by JJ but did observe everyone on the team closely for multiple years, in and out of season.like_that;1308106 wrote:Yes, but you guys clearly understand what football players, soccer players, basketball players, wrestlers, hockey players, gymnasts, etc go through though. /sarcasm
The amount of volume and intensity done during season compared to the off-season (for wrestling) is far greater than that of a distance runner.
Wrestlers work very hard, no doubt. They also need some time off to let their body recover. The other months of off-season they are allowed more off days without their body losing anything.
I can agree swimming is comparable to distance running. Soccer could be comparable, depending how much is done in the off-season.
You shouldn't try comparing wrestling, football, gymnastics, basketball and other fast twitch games (high muscle explosion then rest) to distance running, swimming or other slow twitch (slow muscle explosions over a longer time) athletic events. -

If a naturally gifted high caliber starter (HS or college) wrestler, basketball, baseball or football player just sat on their ass during the off-season they would not lose all of their ability in only a matter of weeks, unlike how a distance runner would.
Running does not take a technical skill which can allow even an out of shape athlete to be effective. -

First, cc was the one comparing sports to start with. Also, if any of the athletes mentioned sat on their ass for an extended time, they would lose some skill in their sport, but could technically still play it. Runners are no different. If they sit for an extended time, they can still run, just not as far or fast.said_aouita;1308193 wrote:Difficult to try comparing wrestling, football, gymnastics, basketball and other fast twitch games (high muscle explosion then rest) to distance running, swimming or other slow twitch (slow muscle explosions over a longer time) athletic events.

Quit trying to make runners into some superior athlete. -
said_aouitaEven not doing sh*t you could still be a state placer in wrestling, as long as you make weight.
Right Felipe?

That's funny, because our school district has elementary cross country and the 5k's all have kid runs.ccrunner609;1308251 wrote:said you got it. people will never understandthe grind that is running at a high level. i have done multiple sports at a varsity level and none are as tough mentally. we can reduce sports like soccer all the way down so 5 year olds can do it. you can't do that with cc

Are 5 year old soccer players training daily, doing interval workouts and actually playing full Olympic timed matches on Olympic sized fields? :rolleyes:ccrunner609;1308264 wrote:so those kids are training daily, doing interval workouts and actually racing the full 5k?
That fact you can only make your argument by comparing your high level training to 5 year olds says enough. -

You just proved yourself wrong with that statement. A once considered blue chip wrestler regressed his final 2 years after sitting on his ass. No way in hell any college wrestler can sit on his ass and perform at a high level, sorry.said_aouita;1308223 wrote:Even not doing sh*t you could still be a state placer in wrestling, as long as you make weight.

FM would have placed at state his Senior year and maybe even won it, if he would have competed......like_that;1308286 wrote:You just proved yourself wrong with that statement. As for college wrestling, FM's only chance to compete would have been at a juco school.
Nothing wrong with it, no education is a bad education. I wish he would have ended up competing in the NJCAA.
On XC teams where the top five are only seconds apart, you can go from state placer to reserve easily.
Plus, XC doesn't have weight classes to help those not quite as gifted both mentally and physically. -

Felipe lost in the QTRs of the brecksville tourney didn't he? It was some holiday tourney, in which he previously would have been the heavy favorite to win. Placing at the state tourney was no guarantee for him. He looked like shit most of the season. He went from dominating the D2 state tournament to us now discussing whether he would have PLACED in the D3 tournament. That is what you call a regression. Sorry to break it to ya, sitting on your ass gets you no where in wrestling and most sports. On the flip side, I have seen plenty of wrestlers who were also cc runners remain state quality runner despite missing a whole season of training since they were busy wrestling.said_aouita;1308289 wrote:Felipe would have placed at state his Senior year. The "if you didn't do it, you just don't understand" is the biggest cop out argument I have seen. I could easily pull that card on you and CC. Please stop trying to pretend you know about the other sports. -
like_thatAlso for football, do you actually think a RB wouldn't regress if he sat on his ass. Just like a cc runner his time (40 yard dash in this case) would decrease without training. Huge difference between hitting the hole with a 4.5 speed as opposed to a 4.6 speed.

that's not what I'm saying. I know he would regress, but he'd still be the starter. At the worse the coach can run a 2-back set, or he can play another position. -

Maybe at the HS level, but in college and NFL, if you are losing a 10th of a second off your 40 time you might be looking for a new job.said_aouita;1308300 wrote:that's not what I'm saying. gutThe difference with other athletes is their "offseason" consists of about 2 hours a day of weights, other training and even - gasp - running.
Let's call it for what it is - cross-country is for people too uncoordinated for other sports, and too slow for track. -

It's an endurance sport. Don't pretend it's tougher or more demanding than other sports. Some people are better suited for endurance, just as non-endurance athletes are typically better suited for real sports.ccrunner609;1308444 wrote:your post wreaks of not knowing. It's not that many athletes aren't willing to puke and punish themselves for their sport. It's just that so few find race-jogging worth the sacrifice. -

Wrestling may be a considered a tougher sport just because "going easy" is still tough. As for becoming one of the best (a state placer) XC is far more difficult.
XC has never had a 4x state champ. XC does not have weight classes, like wrestling where two competitors can dodge each other.
