ironman02I'm really surprised that Phelps didn't win the 200 Fly. I thought that was basically a guarantee, even though he's clearly not in peak condition. I haven't seen the race yet, but it sounds like he made a pretty costly mistake on the finish by gliding. Still extremely impressive to get his 18th medal, and then break the record with the help of Lochte, Berens and Dwyer for #19. Hopefully he can finish things off with three more medals...would be nice if he could get gold in one of the individual events.

gutI didn't care much for the new(?) format in gymnastics. Looks like you send 3 and all 3 count. I thought they used to run 4 or 5 and drop 1 on the final day, or something like that. I know the team used to be 7 instead of 5.

ironman02Really interesting interview with Phelps just now. He basically admitted that over the last four years, he has had a much more relaxed training regimen (when he was actually training). He knew when he came to London it wasn't going to mirror Beijing. He's there for that overall medal record, which he now has, and simply to just enjoy the experience. Obviously he wants to win every time he swims, but he also knows that his competition has been putting in work that he honestly hasn't, so he's fine with letting the chips fall where they may.
It's pretty amazing that the guy can sort of half-ass training for the Olympics and still win medals on the world stage. I really hope he's able to finish off with at least one more individual gold. He's almost certainly going to have 22 medals, 15 or more of those being gold. Just amazing. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if he would have truly trained hard, but I'm sure it's tough to stay hungry once you've already accomplished so much and trained for so many years. Looking forward to seeing how everything ends up over the next few days. -
gutThe sheer number of medals, and mostly gold, that Phelps has is just mind boggling (although the Russian gymnast must have medaled everything - event, team and individual - to get 18 in 3 years).
If you think about what winning just 1 medal, much less gold, means to most of these athletes...just amazing. -

Didn't they also used to get two chances at the vault?gut;1238297 wrote:I didn't care much for the new(?) format in gymnastics. Looks like you send 3 and all 3 count. I thought they used to run 4 or 5 and drop 1 on the final day, or something like that. I know the team used to be 7 instead of 5. -

Just like Jesse Owens isn't Michael Phelps. They are different athletes in different times. Michael Phelps is undeniably something special just as Jesse Owens was. More and more people will begin to realize this as time passes. Part of the magic of Phelps is what he did at Athens and Beijing was he made it seem easy and it was expected. Everyone will go back to seeing how truly remarkable his run is over the next few Olympics.Tiernan;1238403 wrote:He can win a 100 medals and he still ain't Jesse Owens. -
Tiernan"Special" athlete?...no doubt about it, a remarkable achievement. Just not the "Greatest" Olympian of all time.

WebFireSo what is up with the swimmers signing the phone booth? I did a quick Google search but nothing really explained it.

thavoicePHelps is a great olympian, no doubt. And look at how many golds he won is amazing.
but being on a relay team..I dont know.
On one hand I think that really deters from it, but then I think about a great player who wins multiple championships in a team sport likt the SB, or WS or NBA finals. They had other guys contributing.
I still think Carl Lewis, Jesse Owens are a bit above him. -

A lot of people would disagree. Including a poll on ESPN. Need I remind you about your "Argument" on the Greatest rivalry thread about ESPN? http://www.ohiochatter.com/forum/showthread.php?35599-Greatest-rivalry-in-sports.&highlight=RivalryTiernan;1238415 wrote:"Special" athlete?...no doubt about it, a remarkable achievement. He typically swam world record class splits, so its not like he just rode the coattails of others to the medals.thavoice;1238454 wrote:

I think that Phelps is the greatest Olympian in the modern Olympics. -
Heretic
I think it was the one where you claimed you were right solely because an ESPN poll said so. So, if an ESPN poll says Phelps is the greatest of all time, well, according to you, that's law!Tiernan;1238471 wrote:Ya mean the one where I stuffed it down your throat there too?
