I'd like to see you heal cancer, AIDS(how's that working for the 1000's who die everyday in Africa? Thanks Pope!), etc. Headache? Your body would eventually heal that by itself anyway or do you not know how headaches form and how the body works to correct it? Your praying has nothing to do with it.bigkahuna;1141576 wrote:I don't take medicine when I'm sick. So, I'm not a hypocrite. I just let it go until I feel better. I think I usually say something along the lines of "Please God, make this fever go away" or headache... That usually works out good for me. -

Seemingly equally well as science. Not your strongest argument.sleeper;1141577 wrote:I'd like to see you heal cancer, AIDS(how's that working for the 1000's who die everyday in Africa? Thanks Pope!), -

Isn't Buddha considered the enlightened one that Buddhist try to model their life after and follow his teachings?sleeper;1141573 wrote:Buddhism trumps your first point. How does it feel to be wrong in your first initial point?
Scientology is no more cult like than any other religion. They need more money to catch up with the trillions in wealth other established cults(ahem, religions) have. One day, there is no doubt Scientology will no longer require money to operate, but for now they need money. How does it feel to be apart of a cult? You may not give money to it, but a lot of people do.
Sorry for speaking in generalities, you can find the exception to anything. Painting things with a broad brush is the only way to have a rational logical discussion, because like I said anyone can find an exception to anything. My apologies for using the general rule and not the exception to make a valid point. How does it feel to not have an understanding how basic human interaction and discussion takes place?
Buddhism- Buddha
Islam- Muhammad
Christianity- Jesus Christ
I could go on, but all religions have their prophet/teacher/ whatever they may call it that they follow and study teachings. Who is to say that it's not the same person? -

How do you know it didn't help it? You called me a hypocrite because I may pray the next time I get sick. Well what's my alternative? Doctor, pharmacy? Never use either one. Something is helping me get better though.sleeper;1141577 wrote:I'd like to see you heal cancer, AIDS(how's that working for the 1000's who die everyday in Africa? Thanks Pope!), etc. Headache? So if you had a illness that left untreated would mean you'd die, you'd take that as god saying "it's your time to die"?bigkahuna;1141580 wrote:How do you know it didn't help it? Good point. But I'd much rather have the power of science, which has actually cured diseases like smallpox and has countless remedies for common maladies, than the power of religion which has effectively done nothing but waste people's time since its inception.queencitybuckeye;1141578 wrote:Seemingly equally well as science. Buddhism has almost nothing to do with monotheistic religions. They are definitely not the same person, and neither are Muhammad or Jesus. I mean, are you serious right now?bigkahuna;1141579 wrote:Isn't Buddha considered the enlightened one that Buddhist try to model their life after and follow his teachings?

I'd argue this is an overly strong statement. Even if it turns out that the believers are wrong, the "placebo effect" is very much real.sleeper;1141584 wrote:than the power of religion which has effectively done nothing but waste people's time since its inception. -

That something is called the human body. I personally call BS on never going to a doctor or pharmacy. How about this, god forbid, next time you hurt yourself(break your leg, stung by a venomous snake, etc.) just pray; because that works! :rolleyes:bigkahuna;1141580 wrote:How do you know it didn't help it? Great. The placebo affect is a delusional trick, much the same as religion. The trade off of eternal ignorance is not worth the positive placebo effects.queencitybuckeye;1141586 wrote:I'd argue this is an overly strong statement. lhslep134I'm a big believer that there's a stronger mind/body connection than we think and that a person with an optimistic outlook and strong resolve can help the body fight off illness better than someone who is pessimistic and has a weaker resolve.
I suppose it's conceivable that praying helps strengthen people's resolve while remaining optimistic and if you assume the truth of my first statement that COULD help to possibly some extent on a small scale.
That being said, I think organized religion is absurd but there's nothing wrong with faith. And science/medicine most definitely trump religion. -
sleeperSure being optimistic does help. That has nothing to do with religion.

What did you do when you got Chickenpox? Just pray for it to go away?bigkahuna;1141580 wrote:How do you know it didn't help it? You called me a hypocrite because I may pray the next time I get sick. Then talk to medical science. It's a scientifically accepted course of treatment.sleeper;1141590 wrote:Great. The placebo affect is a delusional trick, much the same as religion. The trade off of eternal ignorance is not worth the positive placebo effects. -

Yeah so is toothpaste? Are you suggesting that instead of brushing my teeth every night I should just be positive and pray to god to protect my teeth?queencitybuckeye;1141597 wrote:Then talk to medical science. It's a scientifically accepted course of treatment. -

Not at all. I'm suggesting that it's entirely possible that doing both can be more effective than either one.sleeper;1141598 wrote:Yeah so is toothpaste? Are you suggesting that instead of brushing my teeth every night I should just be positive and pray to god to protect my teeth? -

I wonder if Bigkahuna brushes his teeth or just prays for them to be brushed? I wonder if BigKahuna goes to work instead of praying for money.queencitybuckeye;1141602 wrote:Not at all. I'm suggesting that it's entirely possible that doing both can be more effective than either one. -

Devils AdvocateWe as God's servants, are brought up and raised to believe that God is all powerful and knowing and loves us all.
We are to have faith that god has a plan for each us, and in return for you subserviance, and your willingness to worship his son as well, That your reward is everlasting love in his presence in heaven for an eternity.
If you choose another path, or worship someone else other than himself and his son, You are punished in everlasting Hellfire in anguish for eternity.
This does not sound Like a loving God........
It sounds like a wife. -

I do struggle with the believers who think faith and the secular, science in particular, need be mutually exclusive.sleeper;1141604 wrote:I wonder if Bigkahuna brushes his teeth or just prays for them to be brushed? I wonder if BigKahuna goes to work instead of praying for money. -
