Urban Meyer Chews Out Reporter
-
jordo212000Meyer called out a reporter who reported that Deonte Thompson thought Brantley might be a better throwing quarterback, and that Brantley was all about rhythm.

FALSE. Here's the link to the article. http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_college_uf/2010/03/florida-gators-wr-deonte-thompson-sounds-happy-to-usher-in-post-tebow-era.htmljordo212000 wrote: Meyer called out a reporter who reported that Deonte Thompson thought Brantley might be a better throwing quarterback, and that Brantley was all about rhythm.
Even the title makes it seem like Thompson didn't like being a receiver for Tebow, which IS taking a shot at one of Urban's players. Thompson even said he didn't feel under utilized
A lot of reporters (especially ESPNs) will twist almost ANYTHING just to get a story, and Thompson's quote was certainly taken out of context. I'll bet a lot of the conversation Thompson had was left out of the interview.
I'm fully behind Urban chewing this reporter out, especially saying he'll get rid of the Sentinel's credentials if they call out a player again. -
j_crazyi agree that thompson's comments were taken out of context to some degree. but i think thompson is frustrated with no one talking about florida going forward and they keep focusing on Tebow.
-
centralbucksfanI think Urban is getting too big for his britches. Why would a coach ever say this to anyone?
""You're a bad guy, man. You're a bad guy," Meyer said. "If that was my son, we'd be going at it right now."
Come on...it wasn't bad enough for Meyer to go off like that. I don't think Thomson was being negative about Tebow as much as he wants to instill confidence in his new QB. Meyer went overboard on this one. -
lhslep134Well, considering that the comments could be seen as attacking Tebow, and I'm sure that mostly everyone who played with him still has a ton of respect for him, it could have driven a barrier between Thompson and the other guys on the team, a MAJOR chemistry issue.
So yes, I'd say the comments were justified.
Put this in perspective of OSU.
Say Duron Carter made similar comments about Pryor's successor, wouldn't you feel as if they were anti-Pryor comments, and that it could be a chemistry issue? Obviously Tressel wouldn't explode like that because he's not as publicly emotional as Urban, but I bet Tressel would still be perturbed. -

Honestly, not sure I would take them as anti Pryor. I honestly don't think his comments were that bad at all.lhslep134 wrote: Well, considering that the comments could be seen as attacking Tebow, and I'm sure that mostly everyone who played with him still has a ton of respect for him, it could have driven a barrier between Thompson and the other guys on the team, a MAJOR chemistry issue.

And DEFINATELY not bad enough for Urban to do what he did.
And you made my point with your point about Tressel...as well as other coaches. There is a time and place to handle issues like this. Publicly, with comments like that...is NOT the place.
Coaches and universities spend a lot of time teaching players how to deal with media.....this goes against everything they tell/teach their players. -

This.
I don't think the issue is that Meyer was perturbed...it was the way he demonstrated his 'perturn-edness'.
There are ways to do this positively and ways to do this negatively. -
Scarlet_BuckeyeI honestly believe the reporter did nothing wrong.

Wow...imagine that coming from the resident SEC/Florida hater. Get over it.centralbucksfan wrote: I think Urban is getting too big for his britches. Why would a coach ever say this to anyone?

TheMightyGatorsUrban was absolutely right in conftronting the reporter and standing up for one of his players. All that reporter was doing was trying to stir up controversy and sell papers. Thompson called Brantley a "real quarterback", and what he meant by it is that he is a more traditional throwing quarterback, and not one that is going to tuck it and run. Deonte has taken a lot of backlash from his comments, and it's nice to see Urban come to his defense.
Here's a link to the Thompson interview.

Hb31187Lol awwwwww how cute Urban. Can the draft just be over already so the name Tim Tebow no longer has any relevance ?
-
HereticUrban better watch out. If he's getting this stressed out at this early stage of the calendar year about things...he might wind up suffering through more "health problems" before the season even starts!
-
lhslep134
Won't happen. Tebow's one of the greatest college quarterbacks of all time, his name will never go away, sorry.Hb31187 wrote: Lol awwwwww how cute Urban. Can the draft just be over already so the name Tim Tebow no longer has any relevance ? -
september63The reporter did NOTHING wrong!! He simply wrote what a player had said. Urban wants to get all bitchy, get all bitchy at the dumb ass player who opened his pie hole!! It isnt like the reporter made this comparison. Urban Meyer tries bullying the press down there so that every story has a positive spin.
-
Hb31187Tebow is a sytem QB just like Colt Brennan and Graham Harrell. His numbers are inflated to the max. His passing TDs were nothing to write home about and in an article not too long ago (ill see if i can find it) they show the # of his Td runs that were 2 yards or less and its the vast majority of them lol. So those are made to look like theyre amazing when in reality theyre not

here's an article for you. He could probably subsitute your name for people who are never around the program and don't have a clue.september63 wrote: The reporter did NOTHING wrong!! september63That was one bloggers opinion. BTW, early in the bloggers opinion post he referred to the Orlando Sentinal writer as Jeremy Foley. It is Fowler!!
We all know Jeremy Foley is the AD. That was just an opinion piece by a blogger/fan of the Gators. He wasnt a sportwriter for anyone. -
AutomatikMeyer handled that like a complete idiot. If he didn't want to comment on it that is all he had to say.
-
stroupsUrban is going to get himself all worked up and end up in the hospital again.
-
PrescottWatch the video.
Wrong place, wrong time. Urban Meyer acted like a bully on the playground. -
se-alumUrban = Pure Class
I'm glad that we will never have to deal with a coach acting like that, atleast until 2015. -
SpeedofsandFowler sensationalized the headline AND the story. I just watched this and he owes D.Thompson an apology. Completely innocent use of words by D.T. taken out of context by Fowler. Meyer handled the way he knows, deflect the attention/criticism from his players. He is a genius at taking the heat off his players with the media. But the story by Fowler was typical of the Orlando Slantinel. This video shows D.T.'s comment.

Inflated to the max? Not in the SEC, or do you not follow college football? Year in and year out the SEC has the best defenses, collectively, as a conference. Graham Harrell did it against weak Big 12 defenses and Colt did it against WAC defenses.Hb31187 wrote: Tebow is a sytem QB just like Colt Brennan and Graham Harrell. Next time you're about to make an idiotic point, stop and think before yo post. -
lhslep134And he has more rushing touchdowns than Herschel Walker. I'm sure ALL of Herschels TD's were longer than 2 yards right? LOL You're so stupid a touchdown is a touchdown I've never met anyone who considers themselves a football "fan" that would disagree.

Whatever Folwer did or didn't do is irrelevant. Urban Meyer reacted poorly.Fowler sensationalized the headline AND the story.
