LOL @ Matta saying that "theres no question he got hammered" on that last 3pt shot

    2. Diebler had one of those games where it looks like he does not belong. When that happened earlier in the year I said you throw in either Hill or Simmons. After Simmons played well in the first half, I thought it was a no brainer. I actually watched the game with a basketball guy who hadn't really watched OSU all year. He kept saying Diebler needed to be on the bench. Not only did he not score, his defense was horrendous.
    3. Turner scored, but had too many careless turnovers, but there was no reason to expect any different.
    4. Kyle Madsen looked as soft as Diebler.
    5. Why wasn't Lauderdale in the game at the end?
    6. Matta got outcoached.

With all that said, it's a pretty satisfying year as an OSU fan. And as OSU fans we knew what our weaknesses were all year, and they got exposed tonight. Turner was careless all year. Diebler was inconsistent all year. OSU had no interior presence all year. OSU had no bench all year.
Well said. The one thing I would alter in all of that though is that I thought coaching was about even. Because of the obvious weaknesses you pointed out at the end of your post, all that needed to happen was for us to run into a team that had enough TALENT to exploit those, combined with a good enough coach to recognize those weaknesses and get his guys into position to exploit them. We've played teams many times that have had good enough coaching/gameplan to beat us, but lacked the talent and/or experience; OR we've also played teams that have matched us well talentwise, but had a coach that couldn't figure out how to exploit us before it was too late and the game was already over or we had a big enough lead to hang on to. Tennessee got a six seed because of the struggles they've had mostly OFF of the court this year; arrests/player disipline, injuries etc. Hard to tell how high of a seed they might be had they not had to deal with all of that. However, they did, they got a 6 seed, and when everyone is healthy and now back playing together, this is what you get. A VERY experienced, talented, athletic group with very experienced, heady coach. The last team OSU faced of that calibur was MSU, and we split the two meetings with them, and not ashamed to say that they had an off night when we beat them. All it took, as most tournament games do, it running into the wrong team at the wrong time, and that's what happened tonight. Kudos to Tennessee for knowing our weaknesses, and realizing they had to athletes, and knowing what they needed to do to exploit that. It's actually remarkable we were able to be as close as we were with Deibler's shooting, Turner's turnovers, and the lack of any formidable presence inside to stop their bigs (especially Chism). I didn't think it was an awesome coaching job, but had we had a lesser coach with the same players, we might have lost that game by 15.

LOL no shit. That was as clean a block as you ever see on the perimeter. Except for one of those rare ones that end up in the 10th row.
  • NNN
If a picture is worth a thousand words, here's your thesis on whether this was a clean block or not on the last shot.

  • SQ_Crazies
^Doesn't get any cleaner than that on the perimeter Thad.

Completely agree, Matta is so stuck on that damn 6 man rotation he doesn't realize when to sub when someone is struggling(Diebler). Doesn't make a damn bit of sense to keep Diebler in and Simmons on the bench after he had a productive first half.
OH please! You don't go 35+ games, then all of a sudden change things!! Its easy to say that now after the game. Matta went with what GO OSU THERE in the first place. You do NOT change at this point!
I figured it was only a matter of time before the Diebler bashing started. IF your going to bash him, bash Buford, Lighty and Lauderdale as well. Buford after a great start, disappeared and was aweful on defense. Light non factor for the most part as well.
Turner was left with the complete load and one player can't get it done.
Come on there is no excuse for not playing Simmons in the second half. Hell, you mention Buford and Lighty playing poor and I'll agree, why not sub Simmons in for them as well in the second half. IMO both Diebler and Buford should have seen time on the pine in the second half. You really think there playing the whole second half was productive. Get a fricken clue. Bottom line Simmons should have seen the floor in the second half.
No. Offense wasn't the issue with OSU. It was defense and rebounding. Why would you put a five foot nothing in the game when your getting completely dominated defensively and on the boards? Simmons shot it well in the fist half with WIDE OPEN looks. But he did nothing defensively or rebounding. No one else did. But I'd rather stick with the guys that got me there, and have a better chance of doing something Simmons is not capable of. Any coach would tell you the samething...you go with what got you there. You don't change this late in the season. Thats panicing.
Maybe Matta needs to panic, it's the tournament and you lose and your out. And offense was a problem in the second half. Besides Turner who put the ball in the hole in the second half. Not the bigs, not Lightey, not Buford, and definitely not Diebler. I'm not saying put Simmons in the whole second half and no he's not a defensive specialist, but good god why not put him in to spell Diebler or Buford and see if he can knock down a couple shots. If plan A is not working Matta needs a plan B and last night he didn't have one.

Too small and too soft. I love the Buckeyes but playing 6 guys and having zero inside presence was going to catch up to them sooner or later. Everybody is to blame for this one.
Evan had a great game but he really really really needs to work on his turnover problem. Way too many lazy and careless passes. Evan Turner is not a pg.

Where did Buford go after the first couple minutes? His defense was awful and he took alot of dumb shots down the stretch

Early foul trouble made it tough for Lighty to get into a rythm. Its also has to take its toll guarding a guy thats so much bigger than you are on the other end.

Diebs was AWFUL. I agree with those that said to give Simmons a chance in the 2nd half. Why not? I realize that Thad went with what got us to that point but Diebs was not contributing in any way. Its win or go home, if changing things up is what it takes to advance then you have to give it a shot. I really think Thad should have tried something else. I dont think the drop off in defense or rebounding would have been that significant with Simmons out there. John Diebeler really needs to work on other aspects of his game. Why the hell did he foul 60 feet from the basket after we just took a 2pt lead? You HAVE to be smarter than that. Get the fuck back and play some defense. Stupid shit like that drives me crazy.

Lauderdale was abused all night long. I know he doesnt bring anything at the offensive end of the court and I'm ok with that. Good lord, he was dominated down low, that Williams kid was throwing him around like a rag doll. I was really surprised/dissapointed to see him get dominated physically like that.

How is Kyle Madsen playing DI college basketball? I understand that he hustles and plays hard but the kid just doesnt have the talent. He shit his pants at the end of that game. He looked like he was scared to be out there. I have played against kids at the RPAC and Lane ave that have more talent than him.

I wasn't happy with the officiating but the officials were consistent with what they were and were not calling. If was very apparent from the beginning they were going to let the kids play. Both teams had shit calls. I do not think the refs were biased toward one team or the other. I personally do not like games officiated that way but it is what it is I just do not think that is why we lost.

We lost because of careless play and no bench. I don't care who you are if you pass like that you find a spot on the bench. Diebler needed some bench time too. Simmons knocked down some shots in the first half so give him a few minutes for crying out loud. The sad part for me is OSU played bad and were still in the game. Just think if they showed up with their A game. In this case the better team didn't win but the better team on this night did.

I just hope next year Matta plays a few more guys. You can't win a championship with 6 guys, you just can't.

Tennesee was def a bad matchup for the bucks. their length and athleticism showed on the boards. my only gripe is that simmoms played well, but never got back in during the second half. diebler just wasnt doing anything.
  • Fab1b
I am not blaming the refs but I will not sit here and say that is was even close to a well officiated game!! 3 things led to OSU's demise, first rebounding especially on the offensive end Tenn had way way way too many chances at 2nd, 3rd, and heck sometimes 4th chances. Second ball handling, too many stupid turnovers and trying to force the matter. Third Diebler last night couldn't hit the rim let alone the net!
  • Pick6
Why is everyone shitting on Diebler? The 4th best player on the team shouldnt have to put up 20 and shoot 45%from 3 to win the game. Where were Buford and Lighty? The biggest problem with this team was that Lauderdale and Madsen are pretty bad. And this team had no depth. I think Madsen is a better scoring threat than Lauderdale, but cant rebound worth a shit. Lauderdale is complete opposite to Madsen.

    This wasn't a bad matchup.

OSU just didn't play with aggressiveness and TN did. They simply outworked the Buckeyes on loose balls, offensive boards, and the small plays which add up.

OSU played very physical and tough against the best rebounding team in the B10, MSU at MSU earlier in the season. So I don't buy that OSU is too soft or small to rebound. They just simply got out hustled last night.

They got out-hustled, they were too soft, too small, weren't aggressive enough, out rebounded...everything you are saying, is false.
  • Prescott
They were dominated on the offensive glass and had no answer for Chism. With all that being said, they lost by 3 to a team that defeated both Kansas and Kentucky.

I can "why" it all I want...why didn't we stay in the 1-3-1 zone until it stopped being effective? why didn't we go to a 2-3 zone? why didn't Simmons play at all in the second half? why,why,why...

    IMO,the bottom line is this: Lighty's early foul trouble,and Diebler's stat line (3 pts.,0 reb.,0 asst.)

unexpected excellent season, probable NPOY in Turner, great class coming in--the future looks bright for the basketball Bucks...now,onto football season...

The 1-3-1 Zone stopped being effective the moment Lighty got 2 fouls. He played the MOST import spot in a 1-3-1 Zone, the player who runs the baseline. Ohio State had no one near his ability to play that spot.

I'm assuming you wanted Simmons in for Diebler. The only reason Simmons made 3 shots in the first half is because he was in for Lighty. They were giving Lighty the outside shot. If Simmons came in for Diebler they would have defended him like they were defending Diebler. Someone would have been in his jock, like they were in Diebler' jock. Thus Simmons would not have gotten looks like he got when in for Lighty.

    #2 see above.

You haven't figured out #5 yet??? Not just this game, but the last several close games. If Lauderdale is the floor, FOUL HIM ASAP. Clock stops, 2 sure missed free throws, the opponents get the ball.

#6 How did Matta get out coached?? He was out recruited. Pearl had WAY WAY more studs at his disposal.

Big Gain--I appreciate your dissecting my post, but I was just stating rhetorical questions...btw,what's your thoughts on employing a 2-3 zone to counter the strong post play of the Vols, specifically Chism? IMO,you make 'em beat you from the outside, and if their outside shooters heat up,make adjustments accordingly. Again, this is just my opinion.
