Tressel Contract Extended 2 years, through 2014

  • ts1227
No change in pay, and is subject to board approval in May (I would assume that's a formality, to say the least).

He will be 62 when that contract is up. I think that might be the end of the line for him.

    ^^^LOL--see Bowden,Bobby or Paterno,Joe :D

btw, time to settle in for the stretch run-where'd the time go???-see you in May!!!

I don't see Tressel pulling a Joe Pa/Bowden type tenure, he's more or less stated so before. Not that he wouldn't be welcomed to do so, but I doubt he will on a personal level.

Good to hear, love having him at the helm.

Tressel has said before that he doesn't see himself coaching late into his life.

62 sounds like a good number.

Would be nice to see him get a guy in place within the coaching staff to take over.

I wouldn't mind to see Bo Pelini take over as HC when Tress decides to hang it up...And this may sound crazy to people, but maybe old Urban Meyer would be interested

Good news!!! Another 4 years of winning big ten titles and beating Michigan, gotta love it!

^ Luke Fickell will be the coach... end discussion.
  • devil1197
If we are throwing out guys that are from Ohio, there will be a shit ton of top HC's wanting the OSU job in a couple years. All whom are not old and pretty accomplished.

    Urban Meyer???

The good thing about this being Tressels last stop before retirement is there will be no posturing for another job, a set timeline to have another coach ready to take over the reins and continue without so much as a hiccup. It pretty much gives big time names a heads up that arguably one of the top 2/3 jobs in the country will be available and they have time to make ready for the possibility of moving on to Ohio State.

There won't be a media circus, no denials of talking to OSU, no speculation.

There will be a press conference to name the succesor at the helm at Ohio State. Period.

I would not like Luke Ficle being the head coach...sorry. If you had coaches such as Meyer, Pelini, Stoops (Bob) put in for the HC jobs Fickle would get it over them? I'm sorry but I can't see that happening.

Will he wait that long? And not that I don't think Fickell is a good coach, but OSU is a prestigious enough school that they can get anyone they want for the most part. I'm sure Fickell would be an option at this point, but a lot can change and surely they will interview others.

as crazy as this may sound right now,I think it's a very distinct possibilty.

Don't rule out Mark Dantonio either...
  • jordo212000
Oh gosh, I really hope that Luke Fickell is not the next head coach.

That's a possibility, but he will need to land and succeed at a head coaching job in the interim, as I doubt OSU hires someone who's never been a head coach anywhere before.

I think Dantonio looked like a possibility a few years back, but his teams at Michigan State have been somewhat disappointing both on and off the field.

If I had to guess now, assuming that the job will be open in 2015, my guess would be Pelini, though he might be having enough success at Nebraska by then that he won't want to leave...

I would definitely want someone with head coaching success. I wouldn't mind if it were Fickell, but I hope he has to prove himself somewhere else first.

Fickell will need to get out and grab a decent HC job here soon before he even thinks about OSU.

OSU will have some of THE best coaches wanting to come back home and coach the Buckeyes.

    Well deserved.

I'm curious to see how they handle Tressel's retirement with recruits. Will he give them a heads up to let them know a new coach might be coming in before they're done at OSU?

Tressel has always been honest with his recruits, a main reason why he has possibly lost out on some.

I have no doubts that he will inform them of his plans.

^ Which is why I think there will be a Coach in waiting named before he leaves, therefore I think the next coach will come from the staff.

Not too sure about it coming from the staff, I would like it too for the reasons mentioned above. BUT, there are going to be some great coaches with hefty experience and success wanting this job.

They won't mortgage their coaching future based on not getting a recruit or two for one season. They will not limit their coaching pool based on a couple 18 year old kids.
