Virginia at UNC

UNC going to lose by about 15-20 when all is said and done in this one. This team better not be in the NCAA tourney.
  • ironman02
Just bumped the "North Carolina - Miss the NCAA Tourney" thread up to the top before I saw this thread.

If this team continues to play like they have been, they have NO CHANCE at coming remotely close to an NCAA bid. There's always the possibility that they turn things around, finish at .500 or better in the ACC, and make the tournament, but I just don't see it.

I didn't expect these guys to be a great basketball team, but I expected more than this. I don't know what the problem is, but it needs to be fixed NOW.

Carolina goes on the road next to Va Tech, which is a very difficult place to get a win. Then they go to College Park to play the Terps, and if last year's Carolina team couldn't win there, there's no chance that this year's team does. Then after those two likely losses, they play Duke at home. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see them lose four in a row, which would actually be seven losses in their last eight games.

Never thought I would say this, but I am glad my Jayhawks have Bill Self rather than Roy Williams. No reason an elite program like UNC shouldn't make a 64 team field.
  • ironman02
Come on now. Roy has won two titles in his first five seasons at Carolina.

This team is definitely underachieving, and part of that is Roy's fault, but let's not get crazy here and start acting like he can't coach.
  • slingshot4ever
And Self has one at KU (something Roy couldnt' do in over 10 years at KU) and is working on a 2nd one this year. As long as Self is at KU, they will be in the NCAA tourney.
  • slingshot4ever
I also never said he couldn't coach, just that at this time I prefer Self to Williams.

This comment is why I thought you were implying that Williams can't get the job done. Sorry if I misinterpreted that.

It's fine that you want Self coaching your program. He's a great coach and Kansas is definitely one of the favorites to win the title this year.

GTFO with the stupid comments.. Roy Williams is the best coach in college basketball..

I think you're underestimating what the Heels lost last season... The scholarships and time frame hurt the recruiting process of Roy Williams this past offseason. He's already got a top 3 class (many regard it as the #1 or #2 class) coming in next season.. Let's get over the stupid remarks right now...

The guy has one of the best career winning %'s and his career record is ridiculous. Also, he makes the NCAA tourny more than anybody.

He took a 8-20 UNC team and turned them into National Champions. There is no doubt the guy can coach.

Bill Self will have his down years at KU. It happens everywhere. Coach K has recently had some tough years...

However, do not count this UNC team out. All it takes is a strong finish and a strong ACC tourny showing.

Also, if you're a KU fan, you owe a lot to what Roy did for the program. Don't be mad at the guy for coming home.

DAMMIT. Why can't we play UNC at Chapel Hill this year? Talk about crappy luck...

Come on now, you know that streak will never end.
  • ohiotiger33
You know it would end this year. Actually, we would probably find some way to F ourselves up and lose. You guys would hit like 10 of 11 from outside or something too and have your best game of the season.

    Good point, lol.

Seriously though, I am kinda pissed you guys are bad. That win is no longer even a semi-impressive win. Our lone ranked W is over Butler right now.

I really hope that happens. It's going to be extremely tough with this remaining schedule, though, which is why I'm not very optimistic.

    at Virginia Tech
    at Maryland
    Duke
    NC State
    at Georgia Tech
    at Boston College
    Florida State
    at Wake Forest
    Miami
    at Duke

We've seen how tough winning on the road in the ACC is this year. Carolina's remaining road games are EXTREMELY difficult. This team hasn't been winning at home either, so none of those games are guarantees.

I'll be rooting hard for this team to put it together and finish strong, but I just don't see much to be confident about at this point. I'm not giving up on them at all...I'm just looking realistically at what this team has done so far and what that means for the road ahead. I'm not liking what I'm seeing going into the stretch run and I have to believe that this team's confidence (if it ever had any) is completely gone. They haven't been mentally tough yet, but I really hope that they don't give up and fight through this.

There IS talent on this team. Maybe not as much as there has been in the last few seasons, but these guys are at Carolina for a reason. Hopefully that talent starts producing positive results.

Pretty great season, IMHO. A little bit deflating, however, to think how badly Duke is playing right now at 17-4, 5-2. If Duke were having one of its patented seasons while this disaster was unfolding in CH, it'd be worth cheering for. Alas, it's not as exciting to me. I think I may actually have even taken tonight's UNC loss for granted.

But Duke has its own struggles to worry about. Iron, I wouldn't count on those four losses in a row. Roy, although I don't think he's the best coach in the game, is a very good one, and will have your boys thirsting for blood when Duke rolls into town. Duke will lose on Feb. 10. I truly believe that. And that will be Carolina's ticket to March.

I still can't wait for the game, though. It's going to be fun. Always is.

I don't think the best coach in basketball would have his team playing the way UNC is right now. He is doing less with more talent than any other elite program in the country. So you are saying you would vot for him to win coach of the year if you think he is the best coach in the country right now? Didn't Self and Kansas beat his UNC team by about 20 points a final 4 game?

Me saying I am glad I have Self right now as compared to Williams is not a stupid comment or remark, it is called an opinion. I also never said Williams couldn't coach, just that I would rather have Self. I would bet you anything that while at KU, Self will NEVER miss the NCAA tourney.

Self took a Kansas team that couldn't win the big one to their first national title in 20 years (2008) since Danny Manning and the Miracles in 1988.

Coack K still makes the NCAA tounrey year in year out (sign of a great coach).

I never discounted what Williams did at KU in any of my posts, so you are the one that needs to retract your stupid remarks.

Didn't Roy take Kansas to the NCAAs every year he was there, not counting the year they were on probation?

He hasn't missed the tourney at Carolina either, and has led his program to two national titles and three Final Fours.

I'm not wanting to get into an argument about which coach is better, but I do think Roy's record speaks for itself. I don't think his ability needs to be questioned because he has a young team that's struggling. He did win a national championship LAST YEAR.

Should this team be doing better than it has? Yeah, I think so. But it should take more than a single bad season for a coach like Roy to be criticized in the grand scheme of things, especially after he produced two national championships.

Roy Williams has won two national championships since the last time Mike Krzyzewski coached an Elite 8 game. Thar's no rip on K, just a reference to slingshot's above post. Roy Williams has also coached in six of the past eight Elite 8's. To argue anyone but Roy Williams as being the best coach in college basketball over the last 5 or 10 years is beyond stupid. Sure, UNC is down this year but they were in the last two Final Fours and won the whole damn thing last April.

I do think Bill Self is an excellent coach. He and Roy Williams could very well be trading National Titles for awhile. Roy's fingerprints are all over the KU and UNC programs; that should tell you all you need to know.
  • karen lotz
it seems ole slingshot still has an issue with Roy leaving his beloved jayhawks.
  • hoops23
Some people are never able to get over a bitterness of a coach leaving..

As for your comment about me voting Roy for coach of the year? Nah.. However, coach of the year isn't an award for the best coach career wise...

Mike Brown just won the coach of the year in the NBA, and while he's a very good coach, he's not the best.. Would you agree?

Stupid comparison on your part, though I wouldn't expect anything less from you..

Roy has 2 national titles since going to UNC. Self has 1 at KU. 2 > 1, no?
  • k_boogy
As Ironman02 said Coach Williams has NEVER missed the tourney other than one year, his first year, at kansas when they were on probation. In 22 seasons he has never missed the tourney. So like I said in the other thread Im not counting out a team coached by him until the end. And if he does miss the tourney thats all fine by me for what he has done in the past couple years. UNC lost a ton from last years team, and I wasnt expecting a lot from this years team with so many big shoes to fill.

As far as if big Roy is the best coach in basketball. Some people feel so but you could make that argument for a few coaches. Ill just say he is in the "elite" group of coaches in college bball and leave it at that.
  • Prescott
We all know what players UNC lost. The question is,"Why isn't this group of players performing better?". They have talent. Should a UNC team that was ranked in the preason top 10 ever get manhandled at home by a Virginia that was not on anybody's preseason list and lost at home to Penn State??

I keep waiting for UNC to turn it around because of the talent and the coach, but this doesn't seem to be getting better. If body language is an indicator, this team may have thrown in the towel as far as this season goes.
  • hoops23
UNC was overrated in the preseason poll. A lot of us UNC fans felt that way.

UNC is getting everybody's best shot right now because they all know UNC is reeling a bit. Preseason lists mean next to nothing.
  • Prescott
Preseason lists mean next to nothing.
They proved to be pretty prophetic last year and this year they seemed to be fairly accurate.

    Preseason Top 10

    1. Kansas (55) 0-0 1,612
    2. Michigan State (5) 0-0 1,515
    3. Texas (1) 0-0 1,397
    4. Kentucky (3) 0-0 1,372
    5. Villanova 0-0 1,347
    6. North Carolina (1) 0-0 1,320
    7. Purdue 0-0 1,284
    8. West Virginia 0-0 1,115
    9. Duke 0-0 1,064
    10. Tennessee 0-0 897

We all knew that UNC was going to fall a little, but not many expected this at this point in the season. Teams are supposed to get better as the season progresses. It seems as if UNC is getting worse.

I'm sorry, I don't buy the "Best Shot" theory.

You're right, Carolina gets everyone's best shot EVERY night. Not just this year because they are a little down.
