Ohio State vs. Iowa Postgame Thoughts

    "What an elitist asshole. (MB)"

If elistist is being halfway normal, guilty as charged....if otherwise, criticizing a program THAT FUCKING WON THE CONFERENCE FIVE YEARS IS ABNORMAL
  • dat dude
Are you oblivious to the strength of the Big 10 conference? Or are you just a complete homer?
  • Manhattan Buckeye
Who gives a shit? Do you really want someone other than Tressel?

FYI I went to an SEC school (albeit Vanderbilt) and follow the SEC considerably, I don't think other than FLA and Bama it is all that great this year. What I do know is that in the 80's Ohio St. was an also-ran program, in the 90's OSU had talent but Michigan and bowl games were a disappointment, and in this decade OSU has dominated the Big 10 (and Michigan) and has held its own as a top 5 program.

I don't know if you are spoiled or oblivious, but some OSU fans suck if they don't understand how good they have it right now.

I'm leaning towards spoiled, for your benefit.
  • Manhattan Buckeye
And FYI here are the bowl series standings:

    http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/standings

There aren't too many teams at the top, but OSU is one of those teams.
  • dat dude
You can call me spoiled, if you please. I just fail to see incredible accomplishment in winning a conference that was 1-7 in bowl games last year (just a guess, but I know it was pretty bad). When you have the best talent on the field in 95% of your games, you should win said conference. As mentioned before, when your strong suit is your defense, and you head coach ADMITS to having nothing to do with the defense, then inquiring minds wonder how influential he is?

Sure, you can sit back and count you Big 10 titles, but some question the validity therefrom. To me, Tressel has been very fortunate that the Big 10 has been as bad as it has.

"I just fail to see incredible accomplishment in winning a conference that was 1-7 in bowl games last year"

WHY DO YOU CARE? Are you an Ohio St. fan or not? I couldn't give a crap if the Big 10 goes without a win this year in bowl games if OSU beats Oregon (my guess to be the opponent).....do you even like football? Why do you watch the games? Do you watch the games? Did it ever dawn on you that one of the reasons OSU opponents have had a rough time (cough, Michigan) is because Tressel cut off the Ohio talent from going elsewhere?

I don't get it, it must suck being you. I'm out and going to bed, and am enjoying the OSU Big 10 win, fucking piss in someone else's cereal tonight.
  • dat dude
It doesn't suck being me. I have a great family and a great job. Big 10 football does not control my life. It is ignorant to think so.

The rest of your questions are completely irrelevant to the topic.

    Good night.
  • isadore
who hired the defensive co-ordinator, or did he just show up on his own and begin making defensive calls.
Oh and Ohio happens to located in the Great Lakes region and plays in a league with the dominant teams from that region. During the Tressel era they have been the best team in the area they happened to be located in.

Awwww, poor guy, no "relations" with his S.O tonight. Make sure you wipe your hand off please! You can keep those blinders on MB, some of us are REALISTIC in where this team really is, and the problems that exist in the play calling and time management. No, I don't think Tressel should be fired, but WE NEED AN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. Ohio State is right up there in terms of talent every year. That may win you the Big Ten, but it's not getting it done nationally because of the archaic offense that we run. When opposing players are being interviewed saying "We knew exactly what play was coming," don't you think there might be a problem?
You asked how old one poster was who was offended by the "muff" comment, how old are YOU for making such a comment? If you were a former player, coach, etc... then maybe people would value your opinion. You're not, you're just a vulgar, disrespectful fan who criticizes people who actually are concerned about the direction their team is going.
I too remember the Cooper years, AND the Bruce (9-3 every year) years, and this is a different time now. Ohio State is winning the Big Ten, but look at how the Big Ten is perceived right now. If you are happy with winning the Big Ten, then getting waxed in a bowl game by teams with NO MORE/BETTER TALENT, then so be it. Some of us aren't, and that doesn't make us any less of fans. Merry Christmas.
  • Footwedge
Very disappointed in the play calling today. I would guess the running to passing ratio was about 2 to 1.

Ohio State is loaded with talented players on both sides of the ball. Tressel does not take advantage of it.

Apparently the first down touchdown bomb to Posey was another anomaly.

If OSU is to beat Oregon....they will need 35 points to do it.

ManBuckeye............you the man!!!!!! I agree that it is sad to see how bad some of the so called fans of the Buckeyes do nothing but just Bitch.......some of you should just enjoy one of the Greatest times in OSU history............you could be Mich or a Domer fans instead......................

Last nights atmosphere was just amazing!! So try and tell the other 105,000 people that the game and win didn't mean anything! Tell them seniors that the game did not mean anything! 5 straight conference titles and hopefully 6 straight wins over Michigan will/would be unbelievable. And after the Cooper era tell me you would NOT take that statistic?? Who cares what the other schools do in the Big Ten, we cannot give them our extra talent just to make it even. We play who is put on our schedule and go out and win that's all that matters!! So, once again tell these guys it does not matter?

    Great Post ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • trep14
uggghh... I don't get how this can still completely go over the heads of people. One last time:

No one is arguing that five straight big ten titles is an accomplishment. It definitely is. However, as Buckeye fans first and college football fans second it is not something we can hang our hats on anymore. We can't be content just to win the Big Ten and write everything else off as nothing. College football has taken a trend to becoming a national game where out of conference wins and bowl wins are weighed more heavily in the eyes of poll voters and the media than conference championships. Furthermore, the Big Ten has been an absolutely horrific conference lately. The thing is, people try to criticize Tressel because they see the same old decision making and thought processes that lead to us absolutely getting demolished in nonconference games. Sure, the conservative crap works against Iowa (even though that game could have gone either way). I don't care how many lucky breaks Iowa had towards the end of that game...it wouldn't have come down to that had Tressel continued to be aggressive. That kind of playcalling is what gets us killed in games against teams that have an equal or greater amount of talent level. Once again: Winning the big ten is well and good but you need more than that to be successful in college football in this day and age. And as we continue to win against teams with inferior talent in the big ten with a certain style of play and play calling, we continue to build up Tressel's confidence that the style of play will work against teams with comparable talent. And Ohio States recent non conference performance clearly shows that it doesn't.

Should Tressel be fired? I honestly don't know. On the one hand, the man does win games and has a resume that certainly doesn't warrant a firing. On the other hand, the style of play needs to change. It really does, other wise it will be the same old song and dance in games of actual relevance (i.e. not against some scrub in the big ten). And Tressel is an extremely stubborn man and you know he won't. Maybe some pressure about his job being on the line would light a fire under his butt.

Insert obligatory "but Ohio State just won the Big Ten! What more do you want??!? You're not a real Buckeye fan!!!!!!" comeback.

nope..................you just aren't the sharpest stick in the forest!

"College football has taken a trend to becoming a national game where out of conference wins and bowl wins are weighed more heavily in the eyes of poll voters and the media than conference championships."

One last time, why do you care about poll voters and media? Do you care about what really matters, the GAMES?

Newsflash, there is one national champion every year. Not two, not three, not anything other than one. It is difficult to win a national championship, it is difficult to to win a game against a great opponent, college football is difficult. Every great program has setbacks. USC had a 30+ setback yesterday. OSU had one against Purdue this year. Even the great Urban Meyer loses games once in a while (see Ole Miss last year).

Your standards are so high no one could match them. How hard do you think any coach (including Brian Kelly) would laugh if they were offered the OSU job after reading this thread? The OSU head football coach job is one of the worst jobs in the world, because nothing will satisfy you guys.
  • trep14
LOL did you even read the post?
  • trep14
I'll summarize it for you as succinctly as possible:

Its an indictment on Tressel's style and that as long as people keep saying "Well we win the big ten every year!" nothing will ever change. We will win the big ten and continue to lose ooc games.

    http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=jn-osu111409&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

This article is the ultimate summary of my post. If you read this and come back with "well we win the big ten! your standards are too high!", I'm out.
  • Manhattan Buckeye
Did I read the post? Didn't I quote part of it? Yeah I read it including the piece concerning whether or not Tressel should be fired? You don't know? Again, how hard would any fan of another team laugh if you don't know whether a coach that just won the conference for the fifth time in a row should keep his job.

Rokay Raggie, your attitude embodies everything wrong with college football. If you like rooting for losers, be a Browns fan tomorrow night. If you care about what Mark May or Greg Doyel thinks rather than what happens on the field, I don't know what to say, enjoy being miserable.
  • Manhattan Buckeye
"This article is the ultimate summary of my post."

And my point exactly, you don't care about what happens on the field, you care about style points from the talking heads. Winnning or losing doesn't appear to matter.

And BTW can we give Iowa some credit, that isn't a bad team and they played well.

I thought our offense was great last night. A solid running game going for 200+ and 3 TD's. Pryor was effective for 14/17 hitting 7 different guys and no turnovers. He also picked up a couple huge first downs with his legs. Our offensive line wore down Iowa's offense with 3 long scoring drives (74, 73, and 79 yards for a total of 18 minutes). They converted almost 50% of their 3rd downs and committed no turnovers to put the defense in a bad position.

If it wasn't for a missed tackle on ST and a Williams offside penalty the game would have been a blow out.

Our so called conservative offense gave our defense and special teams a 14 point lead in the 4th quarter, not sure what else you want.
  • trep14
I think I have clearly explained my position on things. No one is forgetting the wins, just don't expect them in the postseason or against Miami next year when they visit the 'shoe. I don't expect OSU to compete for the national title every year but I expect them to be respected on the national scene. If you dont care about what the media is saying, thats fine, but if you don't think that it will eventually catch up with the recruiting you're crazy.

And I agree, Iowa was not a bad team...but they definitely were not a great team. I think we can all agree Vandenberg played better than Iowa could expect and were it not for a few dropped passes by Iowa receivers the result could have been different. Vandenberg should certainly not be hanging his head after last nights game.
  • Manhattan Buckeye
"but I expect them to be respected on the national scene"

A Rose Bowl trip isn't enough respect? Goddamn me, I have never thought I'd live in a time when OSU is so successful that their successes are disappoinments. Maybe you should stop listening to May, Forde, whatever jackass yahoo writer you linked to (BTW you realize many of these people never even played high school football, right?) and just enjoy football.
  • royal_k
I like Tressel as a person, as a recruiter, and as a head coach. I do not like him calling the plays. Do i think he should be fired? No way....but something needs to be done about his offensive tendancies and gameplanning. There really is little ingenuity or variations in how he attacks defences.

Manhattan Buckeye wrote: 'The thing about your statement is that do you wish to compare yourself to 100+ schools who are mediocre or do you wish to compare yourself to the handful of schools who are elite?"

    Like USC? Lost to Stanford.

Like Florida....close game against South Carolina.

Like Alabama..a lot of unimpressive games this year, and had losing seasons and multiple head coaches in the last 10 years.

I'm out guys, I'm sorry if I offended anyone, I'm just being honest, many Ohio State fans are spoiled, and simply ignorant. OSU has done more in the last decade than they've done in the previous couple of decades, I really don't know what you want or who you want do it.
Funny that 2 of the 3 teams you use have beaten us in the past few seasons.
    enigmaax wrote:
Almost, but its more like this:

Like USC? Beat your ass last year then beat you at home this season.

Like Florida? Beat your ass for a national title.

Like Alabama? Hasn't established itself yet as returning to elite status.

Like LSU? Beat your ass for a national title.

Like Texas? Beat you in your last bowl game.

Again, I think some of your fans go way overboard. But, I understand where people don't want a ceiling on the potential success. At this point, it seems like OSU should and does have as much talent as those schools mentioned above but are still considered to be a step below.
    Agreed.
Manhattan Buckeye wrote: trep, if you ask anyone that is a fan of any other team, and ask whether winning the conference 5 years in a row isn't good enough and that OSU needs someone else, you'll get laughed out of the conversation. Who is going to do better? Urban Meyer? Jon Gruden? Big Bird? Tyler Durden? What happens when they (egad) might lose a game?

What a fucking joke what the OSU fanbase has become.
    Yea, Urban Meyer is better.

I don't think this is the same MB from the other site, this MB doesn't seem to have the intellect, rationale or tact that the MB from JJ had.

All the profanity and vulgar language? This is an internet message board and you let it get you this worked up? You must be having at home issues. Seek therapy.
