Ohio State vs. Iowa Postgame Thoughts
-
Manhattan Buckeye"Ohio State won that game in spite of Jim Tressel. "
And won the Big 10 despite him.
[apologies for saying I was out, now I'm out].
Ohio has 12 million residents, I'm convinced half of them are idiots. -

Downyear? please. Ohio State (-cough Jim Tressel) puked Donovan McNabb style against USC. They had that game and choked it away.sportchampps wrote: this was a down year for ohio state. we lost a ton of good seniors who had alot of starts under their belt from last year. you should be happy with tressel that you feel we had a good chance to make a national title and just let it slip away but still won the big 10. Now next year unless we lose a few juniors to the draft tressel has no excuse to lose to anyone. We are a top 3 team next year preseason.
Then they get beat by an awful Purdue squad. Thus this team could very easily still be undefeated.
Rose Bowl is good, but to suggest that Ohio State couldn't be playing in bigger and better things is just kind false IMO -
sportchamppsAs a huge buckeye fan i have to remind everyone that it is 10x harder to reload every year) since they lower the limit of schloarships a program can offer. this means that some of the talent you used to reload with are now going to other schools. I can't think of another time OSU has won five straight big 10 titles and you want the coach fired.

Manhattan Buckeye". I can't think of another time OSU has won five straight big 10 titles and you want the coach fired. "
Because they are fucking idiots. -
sportchamppsJordo, so before the season you had osu pencialed into the BCS championship game? If you did you need to watch other college football games. USC out recruits us every year and they don't go to the National Championship every year and no one call for Pete Carrolls head. Be happy that tressel coached these kids to be this good right away starting for their first time.

Did I say that? Haha. I just said that Tress and the lack of creativity came back to kill us against USC (loss #1)sportchampps wrote: Jordo, so before the season you had osu pencialed into the BCS championship game?
and then they lost to a stinker of a football team. Purdue. (loss #2)
that all equals me saying that Ohio State should still be in the hunt for bigger and better things.
Yes the Big 10 championship is great and another BCS bowl is sweet. I guess I just wonder what "might have been" if we had a killer instinct -
QuintI don't want Tressel fired at all! I just don't understand his unwillingness to mix up the play calling even just a little bit! Even last week against PSU, in the second half he seemed to mix it up a bit. He called this entire game like he called the first half of last week. As for being a spoiled fan. . . yes. . . I am a spoiled fan. I expect the Buckeyes to compete for a national championship every year. That should be Tressel's goal for every year. . . it should be every major college coach's goal. Winning the bad Big Ten this year has salvaged the season, but it is what it is. . .we won one of the worst conferences in college football.

You're giving Tressel credit for getting them to the Rose Bowl???!?!?!?! The lost the USC game because of Tressel. If anything, they have made the Rose Bowl in spite of Tressel! I would have loved to have seen what Brian Kelly down at UC could have done with talent the caliber of OSU.sportchampps wrote: Jordo, so before the season you had osu pencialed into the BCS championship game? jpake1At the end of the day, almost everybody is happy with a BCS bowl. I know I am, because things could be worse like they are up north. However, IMO, to judge one's true success, you have ask yourself if you played your best football. You can't look at 10+ win seasons and say Hey, things are grrrreat. OSU can win the Big 10 (declining conference, no debating it anymore), but it's a local feeling. No more do OSU fans get a sense of national success. It comes down to this, OSU has as good of talent as anybody. They can keep winning a conference that isn't respected nationally. But one thing remains... they still aren't playing their best football, year after year. You can't win them all, right? That's true, but it doesn't mean that you shouldn't analyze the ones you do. Should they have lost to Purdue? Look as USC, are they so good now? Should fans be okay with losing those? I don't think so. They shouldn't have lost them. It's okay to lose to a better team. I havn't seen one of those play OSU in awhile. OSU has been beating themselves the past few years. The conservative approach is the biggest reason why. I havn't seen a team play to win, I've seen a team play not to lose. You can't do that against teams so close to your talent level (Iowa isn't all that close; more like the UF's, UT's, OU's, USC's, etc of the world). I don't want a new coach. I want JT. I just want him to adapt, and be a versatile coach that can win in any fashion. Maybe I'm a poor fan. But over the past few years, I've seen a rather successful coach that can only win with one blueprint.

hoops23I don't think there has EVER been a coach who has won 81% of his games including a national championship and several other big bowl wins that has been criticized more than Tressel.
Kind of ridiculous. -

The botched possession before halftime where Tress was caught in between and USC capitalized and scored before half and the time at the end of the game where he didn't have the sack to kick the FG and instead elected for the 5 yd penalty and punt comes to mindtrep14 wrote:

Also, Tressels performance in recent high profile games has quickly accelerated his criticisms. Carroll has built a reputation of completely plastering teams in nationally televised games. Say what you will about the Trojans this year or how OSU hung with USC this year or with Texas in the Fiesta Bowl last year, but fact of the matter is, there is a national perception of OSU because of those games...and it isnt good.sportchampps wrote: Jordo, so before the season you had osu pencialed into the BCS championship game? First thing I think of from that game is first and goal at the USC two yard line and you never think to call a qb sneak with a 6'6" 245 pound quarterback and end up settling with a field goal...twice! Carroll outcoached Tressel in a big way that game.jordo212000 wrote:

Almost, but its more like this:Manhattan Buckeye wrote: 'The thing about your statement is that do you wish to compare yourself to 100+ schools who are mediocre or do you wish to compare yourself to the handful of schools who are elite?"
Like USC? Lost to Stanford.
Like Florida....close game against South Carolina.
Like Alabama..a lot of unimpressive games this year, and had losing seasons and multiple head coaches in the last 10 years.
Like USC? Beat your ass last year then beat you at home this season.
Like Florida? Beat your ass for a national title.
Like Alabama? Hasn't established itself yet as returning to elite status.
Like LSU? Beat your ass for a national title.
Like Texas? Beat you in your last bowl game.
Again, I think some of your fans go way overboard. But, I understand where people don't want a ceiling on the potential success. At this point, it seems like OSU should and does have as much talent as those schools mentioned above but are still considered to be a step below. -
hoops23The only thing I will criticize Tressel about is his lack of confidence in executing a QB sneak.
-
QuintLloyd Carr won 75% of his games and a national championship and was fired. It is difficult for Tressel because the fans have high expectations. . .so I think he does get criticized more than he should. However. . . it is painfully obvious when he calls the same play back to back. . . or runs the ball 17 straight times over 3 drives that he needs to mix it up!
-
hoops23enigmaax, EVERY program goes through stretches where they lose bowl games or even falls flat period.
I'm glad to say that our down years consists of us losing BCS bowl games and not going 5-7[READ: Michigan] or falling off completely as a national power (i.e Nebraska, Miami) -

Before Tress, the last National title was 1968. He's 7-1 against Michigan and has 5 straight Big Ten titles.Quint wrote: Lloyd Carr won 75% of his games and a national championship and was fired. High expectations or not, he has delivered and made OSU a true, legit, National power again. -
Manhattan Buckeye"Carroll has built a reputation of completely plastering teams in nationally televised games."
And losing to Stanford? Fuck me.
3 anecdotes:
1) I remember where I was during the '95 game against Michigan, Charleston Town Center (in West Virginia) doing some Christmas shopping...I watched the OSU-UM game at an electronics store and couldn't eat dinner I was so upset afterwards.
2) I remember where I was during the '96 game against Michigan, my girlfriend (now wife) was visiting from Boston, and I was so upset afterwards I couldn't even have "relations" with her...one of the worst days of my life...
3) The 1998 loss to Michigan St. was the worst day of my life...I try to drown it out.
Ohio St. just won the Big 10, Ohio St. is going to the Rose Bowl for the first time in over a decade. Way to ruin a great evening, at least my wife isn't home so I wouldn't have "relations" with her anyway. -
jordo212000Tress' strategy of playing solid defense, playing outstanding special teams, and sucking on offense worked well at the start of his tenure, but in the past 4-5 yrs it has become obvious that that crap doesn't work against the big boys. Sure you can bully the garbage that is the Big 10 but it doesn't work against the Floridas and USCs of the world.

I agree. . . I don't want him fired. . . I just want him to get help calling plays! I love what Tressel has done for the program. -
sportchamppsWe won this year with a terriable o-line, and a group of LB's who had never played together before. Our defense trandformed into one of the best in the nation by the end of the year. If we played USC later in the year I believe we would have beat them but, early in the season a new group of players on our defensive and our offensive were coming together. The D has completely put everything together and IMO are playing as good as i could have possiably hoped for at the begining of the year. Our O has showed signs of life in the past couples weeks but still has somwways to go. If the O has a better line I believe they would look really impressive right now. Should we have beat Purdue, yes. Sometimes though when a few call go against you and your young Qb struggles you lose. Now as for next year we have enough pieces coming back that they shouldnt need time to adjust and jell. The preseason next year should be used to plug a few hole and add some more complex plays. This year the spring was used to find out who should fill certain positions and to teach some youngsters the difference between college and high school and what you can get away with. The people who want Tressel gone are the same ones who thought we only took younger Boren to get his brother. You could argue that those to have been pretty much equal in terms of production when they are on the field.
I would also say that if you wanted to tell me that the O-Line coach should be gone I would agree. The only improvement i saw all season was when Hall came into the games the last couple of weeks. He is gonna be a beast. -

Why were you allowed to be upset then, but we aren't allowed now.
OSU has done some great things under Tress, but they weren't exactly slouches under Cooper either -

I get what you're saying because I know how fans can get. But chill out a little and don't let it get to you. Random fans on a free internet forum shouldn't ruin your evening. Just enjoy it yourself and don't worry about what other fans are thinking and saying.Manhattan Buckeye wrote: "Carroll has built a reputation of completely plastering teams in nationally televised games."
