North Carolina miss NCAA tourney?

  • ironman02
After trailing by as many as 12, Carolina now leads VT 35-33 at the half.

John Henson has 8 points and David Wear has 7 to lead the Heels. The freshmen are stepping up and making a HUGE difference at the moment.

Davis, Drew II, and Thompson all have two fouls for Carolina, while there are five Tech players with two. Foul trouble could be a major factor in the 2nd half.

Carolina desperately needs to extend this lead and get this road win.

It wont happen. NC loses to VT!! The slide continues. They play with no confidence. Will be better for it next year.

No shaming Carolina if they fall tonight.
Cassel Coliseum is a house of horrors for most ACC teams.

It helps that Malcolm Delaney is in foul trouble, but Hudson and Allen are scoring at will down low on the Carolina bigs. Not alot of defense down there.

Hokies up 61-52 with 9:44 to play

True, but this is a MUST WIN, in my opinion.

    No excuses tonight.

Carolina down 63-57 with 7:00 to go.

Henson is playing out of his mind. If he's not in the game down the stretch, I'm gonna be pissed.

Delaney back in with 4 fouls at the 7 minute mark. If he dq's Tech is done. Down the stretch they don't have anyone to really hit big shots.

Of course, Carolina could keep fouling Tech, they are perfect from the line tonight. If they foul, could be a bad thing for blue.

And now Thompson comes back in for Henson. Officially pissed.
  • ironman02
66-63 Hokies with 3:38 to go.

Thompson going to the line for two.
  • ironman02
Deon is gone. Might be a blessing in disguise with the way he's playing tonight.
  • ironman02
And of course that's a foul.
  • ironman02
71-67 VT with 31.1 to go.

    Carolina ball.

Graves three goes in and then hangs on the rim for about 2 seconds and falls off.

    Gimme a break!

    13-9.

Too many missed free throws and turnovers.

    Season over.

The shot by graves has to epitomize the season.

Of course if you sweep Duke its still all good.
  • ironman02
    John Henson

    5-6 FG
    4-4 FT
    14 Points

    14 minutes played.

Where was he during the last five minutes of the game? On the bench.

Obviously Roy Williams know his basketball, and I'm a nobody, but that just doesn't make sense to me.

    Well, that's definitely not happening.

The only hope is a crazy ACCT with a lot of upsets, and Carolina somehow comes out on top.

There is no way they win at Maryland. After that game, it's most likely 13-10, which means no confidence for Duke next Wednesday. This is going to get REALLY ugly.

And I'm pretty sure that Strickland has some type of injury...just keeps getting better.

LTrain must know something we don't.

    :D

    rec,

It just dawned on me. All these struggles are for a good reason. The basketball gods are setting it up for Carolina to sweep Duke during the regular season, but still go about 17-14 overall. Then it'll be a Carolina-Duke final in the ACC Tournament and Carolina will come out on top, winning the ACC Championship and getting the automatic bid. Yep, that has to be it. :)

    Marcus Ginyard:
    31 minutes. 6 points. 4 rebounds.

I've probably beaten this horse to death, but I'll say it again anyway... Carolina's biggest break last year was Ginyard getting hurt so he didn't take minutes from Green and Ellington.

This is one of a few teams I am always rooting against so this would be perfect if they were to miss out on the Big Dance.

Adam and Joe show this morning, the said the theme of this year's Carolina season is

    Comfortably Numb.

I think that sums up the fanbase this morning.

I heard that UNC is going to change their mascot to a possum because they play dead at home and get killed on the road.
  • centralbucksfan
I have to admit, this UNC late season failure is really surprising to me. I really thought they would turn the corner. But they are getting worse as the season progresses.
That being said, without a dominating team in the ACC, they could get hot and win the ACC tourny.

I think UNC is going to get in still personally. I think they'll beat Duke at home, and that will give them a boost to close out the rest of the season. Wins over OSU and Michigan State are both going to look very good on their resume as well.

I think they'll enter the ACC tourney at about 19-12 (8-8) needing 1 win in the conference tourney to feel totally confident.

To do that though they need to pick up a road win over either Maryland, Wake, or GT and take care of business at home.

Home Games Remaining: Duke, NC State, FSU, Miami (FL)

Road Games Remaining: Maryland, GA Tech, BC, Wake, Duke

I think it's possible that Carolina will win three of the four remaining home games. Duke is the definite question mark in that group, but strange things happen during a rivalry game of that nature. I think beating Duke at home is a MUST for the Heels if they're going to have any chance at the NCAAs. FSU, with their size, won't be easy either.

The remaining string of road games is pretty much as tough as it gets in the ACC this season. If Carolina gets three wins at home, they probably need three road wins. Four wins at home means they need two road wins. Either way, I just don't see it happening, but I would love to be wrong.

I agree that 19-12 and a win in the ACCT tourney could be enough (but maybe not) because the committee will be favorable to Carolina. A 20-13 Carolina team is probably more attractive than some of the other teams who will be on the bubble. Like I said though, I really don't think this team has 20 wins in them at this point. Maybe that will change, but I think last night's loss was a killer, especially with Maryland and Duke coming up.
