Thoughts on Jon Diebler?
-
thedynasty1998I've been openly critical of John Diebler. And I understand the love affair with him being from Ohio and being white (I know it sounds bad to say, but it's true).
But is anyone else sick of watching him play? The guy needs to be a scorer for the Bucks and seems scared to shoot at times.
Not only that, but he contributes absolutely nothing when he isn't scoring. He doesn't rebound, play defense or create anything.
Last year I thought he should have came off the bench with Mullens and Lauderdale playing side-by-side. This year I don't know if there is anyone better, but I'd rather see PJ Hill because at least he's going to give some effort.
Sorry just venting, but I don't understand him. And I HATE soft basketball players, and that's the only way to describe him. -
slingshot4everI am white and from Ohio. The kid sucks at basketball at the college level.
-
MulvaHe's unbelievably frustrating to watch, and he is completely worthless to have out there when his shot isn't on (at least 1/3 of the time). Liability defensively, never mixes it up inside, not athletic enough to create his own shot, doesn't rebound, etc.
He fits in with this system when he's on, but when he isn't he just doesn't do enough to merit anywhere near the minutes he plays. -
ytownfootballOne things for sure, you've been on his nuts since he's been at OSU.
-
thedynasty1998Who has been on his nuts?
-
ytownfootballYou dude, you know it, it's fine by me I don't really care. But you've not said one thing positive about the guy I can remember.
-
thedynasty1998Gotcha. I'm obviously not his biggest fan, and I really want to see him succeed. The guy is a shooter and refuses to shoot.
And honestly, I blame half off it on coaching. It's beyond me why someone hasn't sat him aside and said, "We are a much better team when you are getting 12-15 shots a game. I don't care if you are hitting or not, keep shooting. You don't shoot the ball, you don't play."
I would much rather see him go 2-15 than 1-4. And for OSU to be any good, he has to shoot the ball. -
centralbucksfan45% on 3pt shot this year, NUFF SAID. He fits in perfectly with this team. He opens up the lanes for Turner...he may be inconsistant at times...but he does what is needed to do. He is doing what I expected when OSU signed him. I knew it would take him a year and never expected him to get 20 a game. Some of you had unrealistic expectations because of what he did in HS. Thats your own hangup. He is a solid 4yr player, who will end his career as the OSU all time leading 3pt shooter.
-
thedynasty1998I actually thought you would be more defensive CBF.
I'll have to agree with you for the most part in that I never expected much more from him than being a streaky 3 point shooter.
Maybe I just always expected him develop more, but he is what he is.
With that said, I think he's a huge piece next year. He won't be relied upon for as many minutes and can be looked at as a shooter and nothing else. -
insuranceguyI thought his brother was the better player myself. Jon was a product of the run and the gun offense his Dad ran. Jake was a very good point guard and imo had alot more to his game but I guess his size killed his big college chances.
-
mallymal614Diebler is a good shooter. 45% from the 3 point line is very solid. However, he doesn't give the buckeyes much more after that. If Ohio State didn't lack depth, he would be better suited coming off the bench in my opinion.
-
WriterbuckeyeLet's see...
Do we believe the yahoos on this board who criticize every move Diebler makes and think he's worthless.
OR
Do we believe Coach Thad Matta, who is one of only two coaches to win at least 20 games in every year he's been a D-1 coach, and who has not hesitated to start -- and stay with -- Jon Diebler throughout his entire career at Ohio State.
Such a conundrum. -
Mulva^ His playing time is coming over 2 Juco transfers and walk-ons. It's no secret that Ohio State has very little depth, and doesn't prove anything about Diebler's capabilities.
-
gabuckeyeSome of you guys have no idea what a role player is, it is pretty obvious. Like CBF said, Diebler shoots 45% from the 3 - Point line, forces a guy to guard him at all times, opens up lanes for Evan Turner, and knocks down many shots when Turner or others create for him. Not to mention he is one of the best free throw shooters on the team. He does not make a lot of mistakes and is a smart player. He is a very beneficial part to this Ohio State team.
-
Big GainI can't believe how stupid and hateful people can be.
In the Purdue game,
DIEBLER made 50% of his shots. DIEBLER had SIX rebounds.
Lighty made 22% of his shots. Lighty had ZERO rebounds.
Why no WHINING about Lighty?
BTW, Lauderdale had 2 rebounds!
Turner had 3 Assists, DIEBLER had 2 Assists.
Lighty had 3 Steals, DIEBLER had 2 Steals.
Turner had 6 Turnovers, Lighty had 4 Turnovers, Buford had 3 Turnovers, DIEBLER had ONLY ONE Turnover.
Turner made 11 of 21 shots, Buford made 7 of 10 shots. You sickening WHINERS want Diebler to shoot more and Turner and Buford to shoot less in this game??? You wanted to lose this game???
Diebler is 3rd on the team in Steals.
Diebler has the 3rd best Turnover to Assist ratio.
Diebler has the fewest Turnovers/game of all the starters.
Diebler has the best 3-point % on the team.
Diebler has the best FT% on the team.
Diebler, a guard, averages 3 rebounds/game. Lauderdale the starting Center averages 5 rebounds/game!
Buford has taken 198 shots and made .399%, Diebler has taken 148 shots and made .453%. WHY NO WHINING ABOUT BUFORD????
Defenses face guard and play Diebler closer than any other Ohio State player on the perimeter. If Diebler's defender helps on Turner, Turner should get the ball to the open Diebler once in a while for a wide open 3-pointer.
The knowledgeable know that Diebler's defense has improved more than any of the other starters over the past 3 seasons. Why no WHINING about Buford's defense??? Obviously the worst defender on the team.
Diebler is a son of a coach. He has 2 older brothers who played College basketball. Diebler has been at practices and around coaching since he could walk. Matta considers Diebler his coach on the floor. -

So, if he was a spook and not from Ohio you wouldn't be posting this? Jake Diebler was a better defender and a better ball handler. Jon's game is better in every other area.insuranceguy wrote: I thought his brother was the better player myself. You don't want Diebler to make any Assists?
You don't want Diebler to get any Rebounds?
You don't want Diebler to make any Steals?
You don't want Diebler to make 90% of his FTs?
You don't want Diebler to play defense?
You don't want Diebler to be one of the Senior leaders for the Freshmen?????
Next year there will only be 2 Freshmen who play as many minutes as Diebler. -

Lauderdale gives more effort?? Buford gives more effort?? You don't think Diebler gives any effort? YOU ARE IGNORANT. Diebler "Contributes absolutely nothing when he isn't scoring." MORE IGNORANCE, check Diebler's stats on assists, turnovers, steals, rebounds and FT%. Read his line in the Box Score of the Purdue game.thedynasty1998 wrote: I've been openly critical of John Diebler. chief_wigamMy problem with him is that he has ZERO ability to create is own shot or defend anyone. It just seems that is two steps slower than every other perimeter player on the floor every game. But, I am also smart enough to know that his abilty to catch and shoot from deep is a lot of the reason that Turner has so much success. It is a Catch 22 for sure.

thedynasty1998Would the majority agree that his role on this team is that of a scorer? He's not a role player in the mold of PJ Hill. He's not a defender or a setup man.

While I am a Matta fan...it's not like he has other choices. Kecman? Peters? The Club Trillion guy? The only player on the roster that could take playing time this year is Simmons...who came up with 2 big baskets in the last 3 minutes by the way....or PJ Hill running the point. At least those alternatives would add some athleticism. The biggest reason that Diebler plays is to allow Evan Turner to run the point. Matta wants his best player with the ball in his hands most of the time.Writerbuckeye wrote: Let's see...

Diebler was a product of his father's system...pure and simple. He has progressed somewhat, but is still slow, weak and timid.
My prediction is that he will be buried on the depth chart next season...especially if Turner should come back (which I doubt, but who knows at this point). -

Scorer? I'd say a 3pt shooter. And if you look at most great teams, many have had a guy very similar to Diebler.thedynasty1998 wrote: Would the majority agree that his role on this team is that of a scorer? He's not a role player in the mold of PJ Hill. He's not a defender or a setup man.
But, IMO, he does more then just shoot. He certainly has his limitations. But he is pretty solid all around. Besides shooting, he isnt' great at anything. But holds his own.
And if you have been down to any games, up close, you would see he is a leader, he is vocal, he is emoational. IMO, he is a vital part to this team.
