Alabama's last TD

  • ts1227
This is definitely a ATH/PTI topic tomorrow.

Plaschke will say it's running it up, all others will say no (Mariotti could go goth ways).
Wilbon could go either way, Kornheiser will say no.

Radio? Golic, Cowherd, SVP, Russillo will all say no. Greeny may say yes.

Can somebody make a list tomorrow?

    Deadspin's take:
Garrett Gilbert, the gawky 18-year-old. Should I be the one to say it? That instead of running up the score, Mack Brown should've gotten his backup QB some reps this year?

The only games he didn't play in were the close games except against UCF, and Texas didn't pull away until the 4th quarter.

Had they not converted on 3rd (and the time would have been there, though barely), that TO gets used to lead to a FG and give little time for a miracle TD drive.
You can't add on this thread either...LOL. They scored on second down with the clock winding down. What is the matter with you?

Kneel on the ball. If Texas calls their final TO. then they have to kneel on it 3 times instead of twice.

I've never, ever seen a fumble on a kneel down play...not even one time in over 25 years when the victory formation came into play after Pathargic's infamous fumble against the Eagles.

Saban is a dick for running up the score...plain as day.

do you really wanna count all the classless moves by mack brown and texas running up scores or any other big time schools that do it?
True coaches run up the score in blow outs....but when it's kneel down time...it's kneel down time.

Or he gives a kid a TD in the NC game and promotes his team agains the other undefeated team in Boise State. It's a National Championship game, if you get there and want to hand the ball off instead of kneeling then that isn't a big issue. If they would've been around midfield and handed off no one would be complaining
  • athlete37
And it's not like he is playing a school for the blind and death that needs sympathy. The other team had 13 wins, I'm sure they didn't need mercy

Sad that this is even a topic.

Taking the score from a 10 point lead to 16 is running it up? Pussies.
  • darbypitcher22
    not running it up.

Bama was running the football; Texas's defense gave a poor effort and didn't even try to stop him

From watching the TV shows (ATH, PTI) and listening to the podcasts of Colin and SVP... no one even mentioned it. Why? Because it was not the least bit out of the ordinary, therefore not worth even bringing up.

I thought they would at least address it, meaning it was even more of a non-issue than I even thought.

Exactly. I don't understand why so many people look for/make up dumb shit just to avoid giving some coaches their due.

consider the source of this thread.

september is on par with ccrunner when it comes to brain capacity.

Didn't read the thread, but IMO this was a classless move. Only because they could have taken a knee and won the game, no need for it.

Here's my philosophy, if you are 100% sure you can run the clock out, take the knee. If you aren't 100% sure, its fine to run conservative plays, Texas hasn't given up so why should you, and you should NEVER just hand the ball to the other team. I didn't DVR the game but my recollection is if Texas called a TO Bama would not have been able to run out the clock. It would have been highly unlikely (if not humanly impossible) for Texas to have scored twice in the time remaining, but I didn't see anything wrong with the play call. People generally speaking are too sensitive about running up the score, particularly when the game is close, and the game at the time was still close. Nothing wrong with it IMO. It was a conservative play that Texas could have stopped, and if they had we wouldn't be discussing it. Sour grapes by Texas fans.

I still don't think they could have run the clock out. Can someone prove they could? And if so how close was it? When I mean 100% sure I mean absolutely, positively, no doubt sure, as in you have the ball first down with 50 seconds left and your opponent has no TOs. That wasn't the case. Coaches aren't supposed to babysit the other team.

I can't believe this is even a debate, notice no media people have talked about it, nor has TX.

Look it up on game cast. College ball running plays takes 45 seconds (appx). After the whistle blows...the clock continues to run ( in order to spot the ball) before the 35 second play clock kicks in. This is slightly different than the pro rule...the pro rule starts a new 40 second play clock once the ball carrier is down.

There was 1 minute 10 seconds on the clock when they ran the first down play from the 5 yard line.

As for running out the clock...it wasn't even close. 2 kneel downs...and the clock runs out. If Texas calls their last time out....which I highly doubt they would, then Bama would have needed to take a final knee on 3rd down.

Saban wanted to rub it in for some reason. His national title trophy reads 37-21 instead of 31 to 21.

It's bad sportsmabship pure and simple. Someday...he will get his....that karma thing.

This link shows that the drive started with 1:48 to play. After one play...Texas had a first down with about 1:10 to play. Proof that they could have and should have knelt on the ball.

Dude they EASILY could have run the clock out--and with where they were on the field, Mack Brown was NOT going to call that last time out if they took a knee.
  • grass_licker

Who is whining? I don't think anyone really gives a shit, it didn't REALLY matter...just answering the question. But sorry, in that situation, especially after your opponent had lost their star QB in the 1st quarter I think it was pretty classless. That's all, it wasn't needed--they had the game won right there, all they had to do was take a knee.

Don't want scored on? Then stop them.
