They dominated every aspect of the game tonight against Cal. I don't know if the numbers will say that, but anyone who watched it knows that's what happened.

    why you say that?

you would expect sloppiness out of a young team in their first real test. unc has a ton of room to improve.

a veteran osu team laying an egg should be more troublesome.
I had almost the opposite interpretation...

the Buckeyes took very standard shots...including Diebler's threes that did not fall in the first half....
the Heels had a lot of shots falling...and some calls that went their way with some dispute...but when crunch time came, they caved and could not finish. I was very surprised to see that from a Roy Williams coached team...they were quitters!...........they have no chance on Tobacco Road against Duke if that is their mindset...they might even drop one to NC State!!! Concern would be pre-eminent if I was a Tar Heel fan.

They're quitters? To me, a quitter is someone who gives up when they're down. Carolina had the lead.

They definitely didn't finish well, but it wasn't because they "quit". They thought it was over and let OSU back into the game.

I'm concerned with some things, but I love how a young Carolina team wins a game over a top 15 team who is VERY experienced, and now the Heels don't have a chance in the ACC. Newsflash...this is the 4th game of the season. Carolina will lose ACC games this year, but they'll win plenty too. By March, no one is going to want to play this team.

lol yes I'm sure all Tarheel fans are scared to death

    a) 5 minutes after hanging the 08-09 banner
    b) having a new group of kids starting out 4-0 after graduating a stud class to the nba
    c) after just landing the #1 recruit in the nation and top 3 class overall

Everyone near Chapel Hill buy your Pepto now before the Tarheel fans gobble it all up. The poor tormented souls...

By March, no one will want to play an experienced and solid veteran OSU team...
and the Heels youngsters will still be trying to learn how to finish.
(Because they sure did not show how to finish tonite.)

    haha, ok.

I wasn't trying to argue that OSU fans needed to be worried. I just thought it was a little silly to pass judgment on any team this early in the season, especially a young team that will obviously experience a large learning curve during the coming weeks.
  • wildcats20
Do you honestly think that in 4+ months of basketball, the Heels will "still be trying to learn how to finish"?

Both these teams are going to be just fine. I love how everyone was making predictions for these two teams after the first half of play. This is NOVEMBER.....It's still football season for goodness sake :) Both these teams have great amounts of talent and will improve immensely throughout the course of the season. I think it's ludicrous to say that OSU is a 3rd-5th place finish in the Big Ten. They have way too many pieces to the puzzle and in my opinion, will either win the title or finish 2nd. OSU came out flat and definitely do not look comfortable yet this season, but imagine that! It's NOVEMBER. Lighty is still getting his feet back under him and I think Matta will continue to work PJ Hill into the ball game and let him handle the ball. Although not a big-threat scorer, Hill takes care of the rock and will not turn it over 10 times a game. Please, everyone continue to bash the Buckeyes, we are used to it anyways :) People will continue to slam the scarlet and grey, but what I love best is that they continue to fight. They finished this game very strong and will take some great lessons from it to build upon for a very long season.....that goes way beyond NOVEMBER. As far as the Tar Heels go, this is a prime example of a great program that just reloads each year. They are loaded with talent, and like the Buckeyes, will continue to improve each game and become more comfortable playing together. UNC obviously will hold a great advantage in the paint over most teams in the country, but will they be able to win in transition like they have in years past. I would have liked to see the Buckeyes run more full court press in the first half to run UNC's big men and get them tired. The press worked in the second half and forced some big turnovers, but it was too little too late. Although an ugly game for both of these teams, I don't think fans of either have reason to panic.....I look for both to make a deep run in the tourney this year. Oh, and did I mention it's still NOVEMBER :) Man, i'm starting to sound like Dick Vitale.

    Yep.

I was extremely surprised to see the Buckeyes make a comeback. This is somewhat encouraging. Over the last few seasons, they didn't seem to have this capability.

Wildcats.....I think it's still November, but I could be wrong :) I had to check my planner just to be sure.

    LOL, what?

This young and inexperienced team dominated a veteran led OSU team for 34 minutes.

The fact that OSU came back and made it a game does not make UNC "quitters".. What a joke of a post.

It's going to take some time for these young Heels to learn what it takes to finish 40 minutes of basketball, but trust me, as ALWAYS, they will know by March.

I'm concerned about OSU. This is a game MANY thought they had a chance to win. No doubt Turner is a great player, but where is the help? It doesn't matter how experienced you are if you play inconsistently. Point blank.
  • Mulva
I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised by this result. Carolina is young, but they are a top 5 talented team. OSU is more experienced, but we have no post presence, no point, and not much of a bench.

I love the Buckeyes wings, but the team as a whole is barely a top 20 team.

UNC has really struggled with turnovers this year (19 more tonight), but if they get that together they are a national title contender again.

As for OSU, I haven't changed my opinion at all based on what I've seen this year. Definite tourney team, Sweet 16 possibility, not much more. I see a 5-7 seed.

That said, I thought Cal was the most overrated team in the country coming into the year, and I fully expect OSU to handle them tomorrow.
  • Hb31187
On the bright side....Turner had himself another triple double. Points, Rebounds and Turnovers
  • milehiiu
And to think , I was convinced that OSU would handle UNC. Boy, was I wrong.

Dare I say I think OSU will handle Cal ?
  • just_a_swimmer
They are going to get better as the season goes. I think our weakest area is under the basket. Lauderdale gets in foul trouble and Madsen is not that good. If they hit the 3's they can contend with anybody but you live and die by the 3 just light last night. Too little too late.

Go Bucks It's still November :P
  • centralbucksfan
Its ONE game for those in panic mode. OSU will be just fine IMO. Turner will learn from last nite. He forced things too much when others were not hitting shots.
As I mentioned on another thread, last nites game really came down to OSU not hitting shots. It was as simple as that. I saw a lot of good things last nite.
OSU is goign to need to keep Lauderdale on the floor. He actually played well last nite except for foul trouble. Madsen was totally outclassed and couldn't compete against the athlete trees of UNC.
OSU will be just fine IMO.
BTW...for those that don't pay attention....UNC a top 10 team. They are young, but they are still good. Their front line size is going to give a lot of people problems.

Was honestly surprised to see OSU play man-to-man to start the game. Thought they would come out and zone up the whole game. At least that is what I would of done, lol. For two reasons All of Carolina's bigs and their pretty talented, and make UNC beat me from the outside. Have to say NOONE from OSU showed up last night to play. Not until the last what 7 minutes of the game maybe. If they play at all at the beginnin of the game I believe they win.

On Carolina's side. Very good win for the tar heels. Tonight has a lot of good teaching points for Coach Williams, for example: how to finishevery game. Any other tar heel fan kind of nervous when Strickland is at the point?? I thought we would see more Ginyard at the point like later in the game last night.

Like many have already said it is early in the season both teams are going to grow a lot through the season. I see OSU being the 2nd or 3rd best team in a very good Big Ten conference. And as a tar heel fan Im not to nervous about the rest of the season although our schedule is insanely difficult. Altho I am worried about Cuse and that zone they play.
  • Heelz
k_boogy this tar heel fan is also nervous when drew is running the point, almost a Q.thomas feeling. Although Drew's offense is better, not saying he is Thomas just that I get that feeling.
Roy can't be happy with the way they finished last night but its time to focus on Cuse.

    GO HEELS!

LOL true. Drew makes me nervous from time to time but I also think hes better than last year. When Strickland is in tho I just tense up a little, and Im not sure why to me he just doesnt look comfortable.

Well, I was NOT convinced. It doesn't mean I don't have confidence in this OSU team, I do. I think they will be just fine, I think they will compete for a Big Ten title. BUT UNC is UNC. They are TALENTED, they are DEEP, they are BIG. Their front line is 6'10, 6'10 and 7' and they are well coached. They just have more talent then OSU. I mean, UNC goes 10 deep and they don't miss a beat! That is the major difference between the two programs currently. OSU has talent, just not the "talented depth" that UNC has, nor the size.
OSU could certainly beat them..but they would have to play well and shoot much better. And it just didn't happen.
  • darbypitcher22
I was disappointed with the way the Bucks competed for about 36 minutes of the ballgame. Just terrible body language all over the floor and it showed. I'm not convinced about our team. Too much individualism, especially from Turner and Buford and not enough distributing the basketball. If this continues in Big Ten play we're in trouble.
  • royal_k
Depth for OSU is on its way......can't wait.
