NFL missing on Freddy Barnes?

  • september63
Just set the single seaon record with 143 receptions. Has 18 TD's and about 1600 yards. Yet NFL scouts at the game arent there for him but for an Idaho player. He is projected 4-7 round draft pick because of a 4.65 40. Jerry Rice ran a 4.6 in last college 40.

Maybe he'll be the next Jerry Rice.

He may not get drafted, but he'll get a shot in the league. 32 teams would be retarded to pass on him

I wasnt saying he will be the next Jerry Rice. But do they put too much value in these height, weight and 40 times?
  • darbypitcher22
the measureables certainly do tell a particular story, but yes, I think in general at all levels too much is emphasis is placed on them

WR is one of the few positions where the measureables actually tend to matter.

At WR you've got to have decent size, and enough speed to get open. Think about it, how many small, slow WR's are there that are successful? Not many.

How did Jerry Rice's 4.6 40 time in college effect his NFL career?

Jerry Rice was drafted in the first round, so I'm not really sure why you brought him up, it's not like he fell to the later rounds, like you mentioned Barnes will do. Someone was smart enough to realize how good he was.

Even though Jerry didn't have the elite timed speed, he had the quickness, hands, size, and ability to run routes that made him able to overcome the lack of top end speed.

Things are also a lot different now, than they were 25 years ago as well.

I merely brought him up bc of their comparable "slow" 40 times.

They showed a graphic of the top 4 recievers that Barnes passed. I never heard of any of them.

To me, he is comparable to a guy like Eric Moulds was in the NFL. Not elite speed, but with coaching he will be a great route runner and I think you can see his hands and understanding of the game (former QB) are no question. He's not huge, but it's also not like he's 5'7 or something. He's a decent sized guy, and I think like many guys that go late round that end up being solid players, if he ends up in a good/"the right" situation with good coaches and good, experienced recievers for him to learn from, he will end up being a very reliable possession guy in the NFL. And first downs are something that never really go out of style in football.

This is the first time I've seen him play, and he doesn't look like an NFL player at all to me.

He has good hands, but he's doing absolutely nothing after the catch. Doesn't have the speed or agility.

Look at his YPR! It's nothing to tell NFL scouts about. It just means Bowling Green has a nice system and gets him the ball against shitty defenses.

Ys never know for sure though. Biletnikoff and Steve Largent were turtles.

Yeah, averaging a first down every time you touch the ball is really shitty.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but Barnes ranks 777th(That's right, Seven Hundred, Seventy-Seventh) in college football in terms of YPC.

So that is pretty shitty if you ask me.

A wide receiver should have that average! A ten-yard average is amazing for a running back but very, very mediocre for a receiver. The NFL doesn't have room for mediocre players.
  • Red_Skin_Pride
Oh look, he's open yet again. Touchdown.

Do they have room for 1300+ yards, 18TD's, and 150 catches per year??

yeah they do but the probability of Barnes doing that at an NFL level is practically naught. Best case scenario he becomes a very poor mans Wes Welker, worst case scenario he gets drafted in the late rounds, doesn't survive the final cut day and winds up in the CFL.

Barnes will be a more productive WR in the NFL than Golden Tate ever will!!

Golden averages over a first down and a half.... ;)

Freddie will be drafted, but I think he'll be a 3 or 4...

Could he break out? sure.. He's a beast in college, no doubt. As always, the Draft combine will allow him to either improve, stay level, or drop, in terms of draft status.

Tried looking for it on the link you provided but it wouldnt work, how many of these players have over 20 catches? On the stats on cnnsi.com, of the top 50 only 3 have more than 20 catches.

17 receptions for 219 yards and 3 TDs.

    What a performance!

I'm going to say he could be a #2..
