I agree with Spencer

"I'm a little biased," wide receiver Evan Spencer told reporters Monday. "I think we'd wipe the field with both of them."
"Them" would be unbeaten Alabama and Florida State, who are 1-2 in this week's BCS standings.
I think Ohio State would beat Alabama by 3 TDs and FSU by 10-14 points. The only thing I'm disappointed in is that he sort of backed off his comments instead of reinforcing it with something like "Yeah I said that, we'd beat any SEC team by 3 TDs with our second string QB and a pack of chewing gum. Urban is the best coach in the country, if you don't like it you can leave it America #1" : thumbup:

Publicly Meyer will state this but privately you know he told Spencer that he's right.

COLUMBUS — Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said today he was "very disappointed" by junior receiver Evan Spencer’s playful assertion the Buckeyes could "wipe the field" with top-ranked Alabama and No. 2 Florida State.
"I can't stand that," Meyer said during the Big Ten coaches teleconference. "He certainly is not the spokesman for our team. Evan won't talk to the media for a long, long time. You don't do that. That's not good sportsmanship and that's not what we expect. I understand he's a young man and made a minor mistake, but we just don't do that. You talk about your teammates, talk about the team, and move on."
Asked Monday how third-ranked OSU would match up against Alabama and FSU, Spencer smiled and said, "I guess I'm a little biased, but I think we'd wipe the field with both of them. ... That’s just my bias speaking."
"I did not mean to disrespect any [football] team," Spencer wrote in a message on Twitter. "I am confident in my team, and as is evident in the video, I was having fun with the media answering their questions. I should have chosen my words more wisely."

I love Spencer's attitude, I don't want someone with a loser mentality playing for the team I root for , but I agree with Meyer's side as well. Dont give your potential opponent bulletin board material.

He sounded like a jackass. I applaud Meyer's reaction.

I guess he can give the same boring cliche lines like "Oh it'll be a real challenge, they are a good team and we will have to prepare hard to play them."

    PC needs to die.
  • HitsRus
Spencer just gave Alabama and FSU prime bulletin board material. Meyer is right... keep your mouth shut.

Has nothing to do with PC and everything to do with unwarranted spouting off. Stay humble and take care of your business.
  • vball10set
Do teams even have bulletin boards anymore?
  • queencitybuckeye
Nothing is more overblown than "bulletin board material". If tOSU ends up playing one of those teams, I assume that playing for a championship is all the motivation either side needs.

It has everything to do with PC including your last comment "stay humble and take care of business". Apparently you are a fan of boring cliche comments like that one; enjoy your boring life.

Fucking this. Bulletin board material is for poor people.

Maybe but IF the Buckeyes manage to play either Alabama or Florida State you can be sure the Buckeye loathers in the sports media will NOT let it die.

Meyer's response is appropriate. Woody Hayes used to bar his players from talking with the media for this very reason.

It's not a political correctness issue. It's just plain common sense.

Urban's an idiot on this. Tired of the politically correct way. Talkin a little smack is as American as apple pie. Would teams try harder because he spoke smack? Get real.

Just a few years ago...Rex Ryan spoke of beating someone in the playoffs on the road as a huge underdog. And they did.

Maybe Urban needs to spout his mouth off a little bit to gain some respect with the pollsters.

Rubbish. If a team needs words to get prepared then they are a pile of losers.

I agree with the first paragraph. Especially considering that the guy doing the talk is averaging 2.3 catches for 23 yards per contest, which makes it the sort of thing those loathers will unmercifully mock, which is always really annoying to listen to.

I mean, I'm not against players speaking out on how good they/their team is, but damn...at least be a guy worthy of the buzz this stuff gonna generate, lol. This would be like if, during the baseball season, Manny Parra or Alfredo Simon of the Reds started talking shit about the Cards or Red Sox before the playoffs started.

Maybe the words, "I think we'd wipe the field with both of them" might not be what is necessary to get a team fired up to play Ohio State. But it's probably a smarter idea for Spencer and the rest of the Buckeyes to focus on the task at hand rather than wasting time talking smack.

They need to to win, win big, and hope the chips fall into place to allow them to prove what Spencer is not shy about saying.

    I'm doing quite alright.

I love what OSU is currently doing, but they still have played no one of FSU or Alabama's caliber...not even close. So until then, I would prefer players keep their trash talk out of the headlines. I wouldn't care if the media wasn't the joke that it is, run with everything and beat it to death.

The guy who spent months bitching about being banned on a message board is calling someone else's life boring?

If someone is going yo talk smack it should be someone who can back it up. The fourth best WR should keep his mouth shut since he is barely relevant right now.

How so? While my preference is to be shown how good you are vs. being told, it has no practical effect on any possible game between the teams. None.
